Red red wine
I can talk about red wine but do not mention white wine to me. Even typing the word makes me feel more than a tad nauseous. We may have overdosed on this when we were putting the world to rights at our lunch out on Friday. I blame my drinking buddy totally for this. Yes, I have already texted her to say I am never speaking to her again - she said she didn't fancy bubbles and sold me on the idea of a jug of wine with lots of ice. This was a mistake. (Although we did have a fabulous, rather long lunch so it may have had something to do with quantity of wine as opposed to the quality... or the colour)
Yesterday required sterling effort - my nephew's birthday party so just a couple of (40) five year olds and an entertainer in a hall. Followed immediately by my god daughter's 9th birthday party with 10 of her friends making jewellery. Then out in the evening for a friend's 50th. I was so exhausted and felt so incredibly shabby I actually drove. And managed two hours before having to come home and collapse on the sofa (with a curry). And no wine.
But I can finally contemplate it again and today is definitely of the red variety. Call it wine, call it berry, burgundy, maroon, the list is endless it is one of the most versatile shades for Autumn Winter.
The best thing about this shade is that it never goes out of fashion. Buy something classic and you will have it in your wardrobe for ever. The ideal thing to bring out every year. I think the trick is to team it with a more unusual colour for maximum modern impact. When I say unusual, I don't mean chartreuse for example, I mean a generic Autumnal shade but one that it isn't usually paired with.
I have recently become obsessed with all things pale grey and shades of wine go perfectly with this. A quick peruse of Pinterest has thrown up some great examples.
Loving the scarf - with the shades of mustard and bottle green just screaming hello winter.......
Or with oatmeal shades
And of course - the classic camel. To put it with black on its own just looks ever so slightly dated but throw in a shade of tan or grey and it elevates it to something much more special.
Pure camel and wine. Obviously with gold shoes. Well why wouldn't you?
So I tried it the other day and I feel the need for a bit of wine in my wardrobe. Actually if I cut down on what I drink, I could easily fund a newly found wine knitwear obsession. (this probably comes under the heading of things you shouldn't admit in public)
Boucle Shawl-Collar Open Front Cardigan from Banana Republic - 20% off with the code BRCOSY
Now I have looked and looked and this definitely was the one I tried on but I did (obviously for me) try it on in a very large size - this is either L or XL. It didn't particularly feel that huge, I have to say and personally I do prefer it in the longer length. I would think it's much better to layer underneath as well - you could easily fit a chunky jumper under the larger sizes but under a smaller one, there is always the risk of Michelin man arms. Or looking like you've not passed the Ryan Air hand luggage test and have had to wear half your suitcase. It's probably not the look you're going for. Go big.
On the subject of outerwear (although I appreciate this is a cardigan but personally I would wear it as outerwear), this coat is simply sublime and I think looks a lot more expensive than the price tag it has.
ASOS Coat in Cocoon Fit in Berry £85 Definitely more of an aubergine feel to this although they do call it berry. I love the texture of this.
Speaking of looking expensive - this looks amazing. The pairing with another colour is already done for you. Much less to think about as you throw it over a plain black outfit. My favourite sort of easy, go to coat.
ASOS Coat with waterfall front and belt £95
However let's talk proper investment and I am having to stop myself pressing buy on this. The only reason is that I actually cannot justify a coat at all. But then I think about the 3.1 Phillip Lim coat that I own in grey that I have had now for 8 years. And I wear every single year, loving it as much as the day I bought it. Surely this would stand the test of time too?
And... a very kind reader posted the code PAYPAL20 for 20% off your Finery order (I've just tried and it works. DARN IT! Blame her not me.)
Fanshaw Bonded Leather Coat £345 pre discount
These however are totally top of my wine wishlist. I can't heap enough positive praise on these - well, the black ones, I'm assuming that the burgundy ones are identical. They are quite frankly the most amazing trousers, leggings, call them what you will that I have ever put on. Super flattering, ridiculously comfortable and able to take you absolutely anywhere. Free delivery and free returns with AUTUMN15.
Burgundy is definitely a "hush colour" - a quick flick through their website will give you a whole host of other ideas on how to wear it. But for super ease - this is on its own and will carry you to so so many events this A/W.
Jumpsuit from hush £75
New in also at hush is the Claire Jumper for £90 which is a cashmere mix. Great textile combo
Following on from my Dotty P post the other day, I have had so many message from people confirming how amazing the Eden jeggings are. There is now 25% off everything online. Yes - Everything!
Merlot Eden Ultra Soft Jeggings were £20 now £15
Accessories I will cover in more detail shortly and definitely include some burgundy ones but as this is just back in stock and it's reversible so double bubble, I just had to include it.
hush Blanket Shawl £35
Footwear - and I think we are nudging into legitimate boot territory now. These rock. End of.
ASOS Exit 70s Ankle boots £42
I may have mentioned once or a gazillion times that I am all about the chunky shoe at the moment and therefore these are a thing of beauty for me.
Bronx Bordeau Patent Leather Patent Boots £102
And also at Finery (don't forget your 20% off) are these which I absolutely adore. If your wardrobe consists of mainly tan, black and grey then these will finish it off perfectly.
Crawford Leather Ankle Boots £139 from Finery
I'm not sure which of the pieces is my ultimate favourite but I do think one or two bits to make a change to a sea of black, grey and camel, can work wonders for your wardrobe.
One colour which I don't seem to totally embracing this season is navy but thankfully I have a plethora from seasons gone by to drag out for something a bit different.
The Hush shawl is out of stock again already. Why???????? it's not fair! I want it even more now!
ReplyDeleteoh noooooooo! I'll ask them today if it's going to be back in stock any time soon x
DeleteThink I need to get some burgundy in my wardrobe this A/W. Love the checked scarf - do you know where it is from? Thank you.
ReplyDeleteOh I don't, I''m so sorry. But I'm going to be doing a check round up shortly, so I'll see if I can find another one x
DeleteLove this post kat, have some burgundy boots from M&S that I've hardly worn. Think I'll have to get them out!
DeleteJust jumping in but they have a pretty similar scarves in Sainsbury's of all places. Just Bought myself one. Red check / reversible and rather loveky for £12, Tracey xx
Fab tip thank you!!
Deletethat particular check scarf i have seen on ebay.com, not sure if it is on the UK site. Hope that helps Lorri.
DeleteYou have been busy! Love the wine coloured ankleboots and the Hush leggings are oooh... I will definately give them a try! Love wine both in a glass and in a lovely outfit I haste to say! Thanks again for the lnspiration!
ReplyDeleteTx
I honestly can't tell you how worth it they are x
DeleteLove the suggestion to pair burgundy with camel (I would never have thought to do that for some reason!) I was convinced you were going to list the Weitzman Lowland boots in currant!! I tried these on last week and am in love... but not sure whether black would be the better bet long term? I have a camel trench and am now envisaging the currant lowlands with it... but maybe black would be more me.... I dont normally do colour, decisions, decisions....
ReplyDeleteNow spill the beans, are you going to buy your Loden Lowlands????
And love the look of the Hush leather leggings - are they stretch leather? (are they backed in stretchy cotton?) If not, are they lined? Is the waist stretchy?
Oh Lordy do you know what? I have been over and over and over these. I tried on and bought the & Other Stories ones last week which never even went online - well I think they did for about two mins and then sold out. Not the ones they have on there at the moment, they have a longer pointed version. Well. they were too long (as in even on me - they came too high up my leg to wear a mini skirt over - just looked weird!) and they just didn't stay up. Bagged around my knees in 5 paces.
DeleteSo I then went and AGAIN tried on the SW boots and I'm not just sure how much I will actually wear them for that money. It's SO much money and the fact I haven't bought them by now and not once have I ever thought - god I wish I had them to wear out today.... I think meh. Maybe I'll just leave it (till next week.... ARRGGH!)
ah and forgot to add - the hush leggings are all over stretch leather. They aren't lined but they are ridiculously super soft. The waist is stretchy too so you wouldn't want to see it but they bum and crotch area are so flattering that you only really need to make sure the waist band is covered (as in you wouldn't want to tcuck anything into it) They also don't over stretch. I have worn them five times now I think and each time they just ping back into shape. Honestly, they are genius!
DeleteI got the Mint Velvet leggings this year. Leather at the front and stretch at the back. V flattering cut and waistband. As comfy as my running pants! Wore them once so far and got lots of compliments. The hush ones look amazing but the MV ones wondering out for me less than a third of the price at about €100
DeleteI do love berry shades in Autumn/Winter and they work so well with grey and camel. I'm so jealous of your Alexis boots- I ordered the 39 in the snow leopard print but they they were so tight I had to return and the 40 is out of stock 😕
ReplyDeleteOh such a shame. I love them!
DeleteLove, love, love burgundy, so easy to wear. I definitely wear it with grey a lot, and also navy/blues for a rich autumnal look. So many lovely things! I agree about buying an investment piece, I have a toast jumper dress in this shade from several years ago. Also a hush scarf from last year in mallard, which has blues and burgundy in it - very wearable with lots of colours.
ReplyDeleteTanya
Doesn't quite work with navy for me but you're absolutely right, when teamed in a print with it, it goes beautifully. And actually, if you teamed it with teal and grey it would be stunning - genius suggestion!
DeleteI'm in total lust over the Hush leather leggings (love how they look on you!) but I'm not much of a leather person so praying for a promo code so I can buy with less guilt.
ReplyDelete(Seriously love Finery London, especially their shoes! I have their snakeskin ankle boots and they are super comfortable! Plus they are very fast at refunds so def worth trying out especially if you live in the UK.)
That's really good to know about Finery. They were excellent at solving a problem I had with a missing parcel as well. I would honestly try the leggings - they're actually so much more than that, if that makes sense...??!! So you could wear them on so many different occasions. I would have worn them to work with an oversized shirt and blazer - they're not a shiny leather so really do look very elegant.x
DeleteSee my comment r.e. Mint Velvet leggings above!
DeleteI thought the same thing when I tried it on - a perfect fit and I'm even super tall! I didn't think it was that thin? I wouldn't be wearing it out to watch rugby in but for a night out - do you not go to people's houses with heating?!! FAir enough if you were out on the streets it would be a tad chilly but we tend to stay indoors in the winter! Wouldn't you boil alive with leggings on underneath?
ReplyDeleteBurgundy boots would be amazing wouldn't they? I had a pair years ago (god knows where they went!)
Oooh lovely suggestions there but what I really want to know is how are the R & B Chester loafers? I keep looking at them on-line and loving them but need to go and try on a pair in the flesh - priceyish but I'm thinking worth the money for something so classic??
ReplyDeleteI bought mine three years ago and whilst I don't wear them a lot, I have worn them every single season without fail. They are a true classic and personally I think they're absolutely worth it!
DeleteI'm swimming against the tide here but I sent my hush jumpsuit back! Didn't like the fabric, too thin and no drape for me. Now trying one from ASOS and one from Finery (thanks for code) as of course now HAVE to have one before go away for half term - obsessed!
ReplyDeleteoh that's such a shame, it was definitely drapey on me even at 5ft10! Really hope you find one you like - and yes, I am SO with you on the Must Have things!
DeleteI don't normally like burgundy but this year im loving it. xx
ReplyDeletewww.assessorise.com
I definitely think it depends on what you put it with, what item of clothing it is and what shade it is. x
DeleteKat - quick question - the Hush leather leggings, good on a smaller person? I appreciate you have legs that stretch on and on and will look good in all things on the bottom, but on a 5ft 2 personage???
ReplyDeleteYES. A lovely lovely friend of mine has them and she is a lot shorter than me - now she has actually just chosen to wear hers slightly ruched at the bottom but you could easily just cut the bottom of them off - they are not finished on the hem - it's just raw leather. It looks perfectly fine like that by the way! I would say absolutely. Plus you could always try them and send them back with the free delivery and free returns code xx
DeleteThank you - I tried some other on that had zips at the ankles! Only for gazelles! True to size would you say? Am probably a size 11 on a bad day so up to 12 or down to 10?
DeleteIf it's on a bad day and you're petite then I would say go for the 10. xx
DeleteNo!!! (but I fear you will be v warm....)
