Infamy at last

I say infamy, as apparently you are the spawn of the devil if, god forbid, you should get up 5 mins earlier in the morning and bother to put on clean clothes that match and fit (if they're from this season, that should probably earn you a public flogging), brush your hair and, gasp, put make up on.  This is according to your average Daily Mail reader (Mother - wasn't you, was it?) in an article that was published yesterday

I was fortunate in that as I only had a mention (but a pretty flattering mention at that I think!), I dodged a bullet with regards to the vitriol that was spouted at the lovely girls who were featured in the article (with bloody successful blogs I'd like to point out)  I know they are more than sensible enough to realise what an utter pile of tripe some people come out with.  Why people would bother to read an article in which they clearly have no interest and then take time to comment on a subject with obviously bores them to tears, is beyond me.  So long as their comments have made them feel bigger people eh?

To some people the world of fashion will always be offensively shallow.  To others it's an interest, to some it's a hobby and to other's it's a way to make a living.  I am now fortunate enough to be pursuing the latter and judging by the feedback I've had to starting a business, there are a lot of women out there who are as "shallow" as me and are interested in and care about the way they look.  Not exactly a surprise though, considering the volume of fashion magazines that adorn our shelves and the phenomenal turnover in general of the fashion industry.  I wouldn't dream of judging someone else's interest, hobby or blog with the same level of spite quoted by some of the commentators on the Daily Mail website.  Anyone would think that mothers who are interested in their appearance are a brand new species.  Not sure how we are any more shallow or pathetic than the plethora of 18 to 28 year olds who blog about their interest in fashion.  Oh hang on, they don't have children who will be scarred for life by the fact their mothers don't wear a tracksuit for the school run.

But, at the end of the day, each to their own.  Wouldn't it be a dull world if we all sang from the same hymn book?

I would, however, just like to point out that since my children are up generally at 6am and we don't leave for the school run until 8.30, they're not exactly starved for my attention in the morning.  In fact I actually would have time to go to the hairdressers for a blow dry, come back and still earn Brownie points by making pancakes for breakfast. (actually I should also point out that I am all smoke and mirrors and in reality, a total grubby article, as I haven't washed my hair since having it cut on Saturday and probably won't till I go out on Thursday night.  Get a load of that!).  But  maybe I should try and fit in World Peace one morning instead of finding a scarf to match my jacket........

Now back to business and what a strange day.  There was this random yellow thing in the sky for quite a lot of the day and I managed to legitimately wear sunglasses for the first time in as long as I can remember.  I'm thinking we should all bow down and worship at the altar of the print jean as it was clearly them that made the difference.

Yes, I finally plucked up the courage to bare my Primark wonders to the public.  And am I impressed with them? Hell yes.  Fab fit, wore them all day and they didn't bag in the slightest.  For the princely sum of £13.  Plus two people came up to me (both in Whistles) and asked where they were from and were shocked at my (slightly smug) answer.  If anyone is in the market for a pair, get thyselves to Primark and get trying them on - they did have a great selection a couple of weeks ago and I would imagine they've only got more now.  If we all wear them, surely it will be 80 degrees and wall to wall sunshine come Friday.

Am going to remain optimistic and crack open another Spring item from the wardrobe tomorrow. Just call me crazy!

A very quick lust of the day to finish off with.  I'm sure we haven't had a bag in ages - and we certainly haven't had a summer bag, so whilst I could quite happily blog about the entire range of Mulberry beauties that are about this Summer (I am saving myself for the launch of the Del Ray mind you.....) I've found a far more economical number that I'm keeping my eye on (should we ever get a bloody Summer)

And I will concur that it looks like diddly squat in the pics.   I wouldn't have given it a second glance had I just seen it on the website.  But in real life - a completely different kettle of fish.  Utterly gorgeous.  Beautiful shade of light tan, stunning buttery leather and a gorgeous size.  Altogether a pretty perfect Spring/Summer bag.  Here's a photo I took of it which I think demonstrates (despite the abysmal pic quality. Again) how much better it is in the flesh.

To finish, I'd just like to say a thank you to all those who do read my blog, who follow me and who comment.  Clearly there are some of you out there who do enjoy reading my shallow drivel.  I love reading your comments and will always try and respond to them.  Please do feel free to comment on the blog or alternatively email me on doesmybumlook40@gmail.com with any queries or comments.  I am in the process of trying to put together a Facebook Page but with my technical ability being non-existant, please don't hold your breath.  Thank you xxxx

  3. I always maintain that having been on forums for years is great preparation for blogging and all the rest of the rubbish that you get on the internet! Water of a ducks back, an' all that. However, it is still surprising how many people want to comment on things that they 'hate' and that 'bore' them. I will assume that as you made an appearance in the DM that you are doing very well indeed ;)

I have you to thank for my love of Converse and Mulberry bags. Blog on, I say!!

  4. Yes, funny how every single commenter seemed to miss the part about us being "self depricating".

I have and love the Primark jeans, wish they did them with a dark background though because I don't have your amazing legs.

  5. Go Kat you tell em! Felt v cross at the DM then put on nice outfit with matching bag and shoes, not forgetting a scarf, totally ignored children, and felt so much better. I love your blog.

  6. What the hell do they know? I have 2 children (5 and 3) and am just getting my mojo back, i'd started going to the gym at the start of the year but completely lacked inspiration on where to start with my wardrobe. Your fabulous pictures and inventive ideas made me remember that i had tons of lovely clothes lurking that i just needed to rework and update with some fabulous accessories.

And i'm very much looking forward to delivery of my new Hudson Keira boots :)

  7. New reader here from Sydney, Australia via the Daily Fail article. Very pleased to have found another fab blog to add to my reading list. I bring a half empty suitcase on our regular visit to the UK every three years, so this blog will act as my personal shopper! Cheers!

There's been lots of comments in the Australian blogosphere about how hideously vile and nasty the comments were :(

  8. I do love an occasional trip to the loonyville that is the DM comments club - it quite amazes me that people like that really exist.

I have only just found your blog but I love it already(I am currently hunting ebay for a tan Zara shopper) Good to see you are giving the DM comments the attention they deserve (i.e. zilch)
    xx

  9. PS - I set up a FB page for my blog and found it not as bad as I'd thought - and I'm a total gumby. My blog is self hosted Wordpress so I just fiddled around a bit trying to create a Facebook app, died one thousand deaths and then imported a WPBEGINNER plug in to do the job for me.

  10. You said it all! As you know I was in the firing line this week by a few spiteful people (use the word loosely!) who don't get my blog and style.... but still choose to read it (Hmmmmm). Erm, you read, you like, you don't, you move on.

Point of post....... you are doing your blog as an aside to your business..... jump on it while it's hot!!!! Couple of emails, pics and links of blog and DM to relevent mags, journalists!!

Come on girl..... feed the green eyed monsters!

  11. well Im a new follower after a link to the article came up on my Facebook, I just liked your style best, I was shocked at some of the comments TBH, seems the Daily Fail likes setting up women for public flogging.

  12. Hi Kat,

I came across your blog via the Daily Mail article - I'm currently on maternity leave (was due on Sunday and starting to go slowly mad with each passing day!) and set up my own blog at the end of last year to track my style transition from career girl through pregnancy and onto breastfeeding and mummy-hood. Having avidly read your blog and past posts I just wanted to say I love it! You have impeccable style and have really cheered me up as at the moment I can't imagine feeling like a glam yummy mummy!

I hadn't read the comments on the DM site until just now and am truly shocked at how spiteful some of them are. They must be from very bitter, sad (and most probably frumpy, jealous, tracksuit wearing) people.

Personally I think it is brilliant that women today can look and feel great as well as have a family - if people aren't interested then nobody is forcing them to read our blogs are they?

Anyway, mini-rant over from me - keep up the fab work!

  13. Hi! I read the article. In fact I got your site add from there. I am a mom and blogger and just pissed me off reading some of the nasty comments implying that blogger moms neglecting the children and duty as wife, mom whatever. Well, it is their lost if they think it is a sin to even want to look good. All I can say is I am happy dressing up, mu husband is super happy and my boys they love mommy looking pretty coming to get them from school! You are fab, Kat.. sometimes jelousy, envy speaks :)

    Hugs from Dubai!

  14. Very well put...I too couldn't fathom why they took the time to read, log in and then comment if it was so boring for them!? If you like it then welcome if not move on and please don't assume we are all bleeding our Husband's dry while starving our children - no one would be accused of that if their interest was going to the gym or watching a football match, plus some of us have careers...we're just excellent multi-taskers - or not:)

Love your writing - miss the sarcasm over here - have offended too many people now when they think I am serious...Joanna

  15. Would love to know how you find the length of Primark jeans? I know you are tall like me...Im 5 foot 11 and can only ever buy jeans in Topshop tall, or DP tall or NExt tall..you get the picture! Are Primark jeans long enough for us tall folk? I've never even considered looking given that I'm so limited usually!

  16. Glad you are ignoring the nasty comments. Loving your blog and style!

  17. I love your blog hun, out of all the blogs they featured yours is the most stylish i think. You'll always get "haters" on DM. Not worth your time to even read them!

  18. Totally the reason I pulled out of a Daily Mail photoshoot a week after the Sam Brick debacle, I just couldn't open myself up to the ridicule I knew it would get, imagine late 40's, overweight fashion blogger has an opinion on who looks better in their 40's than they did in their 30's - imagine what the readers would have said! I felt bad for the journo but at the end of the day, I had to think about my fragile emotional state more than blog traffic! Love the Cos bag, want it badly!

  19. The DM has long been banned from crossing the threshold of our front door. I devote 95% of my time to my family, raising my 2 children and maintaining a career that sees me give my skills and expertise to the local community. The other 5% of my time I spend indulging my passion for fashion - flicking through fashion mags, looking at blogs, perusing the Mumsnet style and beauty page and, quite shamelessly, deciding what to wear each day so that I look my best. Like hell am I going to feel bad about it!

    ReplyDelete
  20. I only ever read the DM articles like this linked from Mumsnet (where you are universally loved) so have the ability to laugh at the "outraged of Sittingbourne" comments.
Great blog, read you all the time. Although still not sold on the printed jeans.

Hmmm, but I see a business idea stemming from the crap comments on the DM website!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Kat I was genuinely flabbergasted when I read the DM comments (only got around to reading them today). As a fellow mum + (non fashion) blogger I admit they really did get my back up. We all have to get dressed every day... it's not actually any more difficult to put something nice on & it's not about being competitive - aren't we allowed to feel good for ourselves?!

Anyway, I'm glad that some positives have come out of it and delighted to see your follower numbers shooting through the roof! :D

Must admit I wasn't sure about those jeans but love how you've styled them - you look fab in that outfit.

Now that you're famous can you please stop hiding your face in pics?!
