Another life changing find

And no, it's not a pair of shoes.

Dare I say, it's even better than that?

Life changing, that's what it is.  It's a hair product.  Not what I usually do at all but this is just a quickie extra blog (last day of school for us today, complete with 8yr old's Autistic catch up which was really positive this time round, so fist bumps all round) as I only bought this yesterday but already I am blown away.

May I present the Babyliss Curl Secret £119.

How scary does that look?  A better description for this would be the "hair sucker upper and curl spitter outer".

So I am already a massive Babyliss fan being on my second Big Hair (the first one I had for 4 years - it owed me nothing) and when I say it was life changing, it really was.  I could actually get a salon finish on my wire wool hair.  Saved me a fortune in blow drys.

It's no surprise then that I've always wanted to try the Secret Curl but it's a pretty steep investment - £119.  And really could it possibly work?  A machine that sucks your hair in, does something magic to inside the barrel bit and then spits out a perfect curl.  Oh and defrizz at the same time.  Yeah right.  It was just always too big a gamble to take.  I had visions of my hair getting stuck in the machine and ending up with inch long hair all over my head.

But last week, when I had my hair cut, my hairdresser had her daughter's with her in her bag of tricks so I asked if I could try it.  And what do you know?  IT WORKS.

I do think it helps that my hair is shorter, but you can actually just curl from half way down longer hair to get a wavy bottom, so length of hair really isn't an issue.  (now I found out.  ALL those years I struggled with a curling wand when this would have done the job in half the time and defrizzed at the same time.)

It is genuinely this easy.

I absolutely kid you not.

I went and bought one yesterday.  I got mine from John Lewis as they have a total no quibble three year guarantee and if anything does go wrong, they'll just refund immediately.  Always my go to retailer for all electrical goods.

So last night, the 10yr old and I had a play.  Fifteen minutes later (obviously I was running late...), I had a pretty darn good head of waves.  You can set the temperatures at different heats for types of hair and the amount of time for tightness of curls.   And it's not difficult.  Yes it does take some getting used to but I think you could easily perfect, the longer you practise with it.

It's not perfect perfect but oh my lord, for the first attempt and from a head of total frizz (freshly washed hair that I just blasted with a hairdryer so you could actually see me from space), I was pretty darn chuffed.

I wanted soft waves so as soon as the curl came out, I pulled it through whilst it was still warm (top for soft waves so my lovely hairdresser told me).

What do you think? I was out for a dinner party - cocktails on a Wednesday night.  It did seem like a good idea at the time.  This morning, not so pretty.... But it was a fab night.

And today - here it is with me having dragged it back in a bun, slept on it and just taken it out.  No I didn't brush it.   I am still super pleased.

So there we go - don't say I never give you anything.  If you like curls or waves and want a super easy option, then this will genuinely revolutionise your life.  Anyone else already got one?

  2. Wow... Fabulous results with the Curl Secret! You look beautiful. Btw, I think your haircut is gorgeous and makes you look 5 years younger. (Not that I'm saying you looked old before!) :)

  3. Looking good. My hair is poker straight so it might be worth a go. My trouble is I'm a bit lazy and can't really be bothered doing anything much to my hair. I really should make more effort! Lorraine x

    1. This is honestly so so so easy, I promise you. I am lazy mclazy when it comes to beautifying - quickest route to acceptable is the name of the game for me!

  4. Your hair looks beautiful in the last 'slept in' photo. I have (lots of) fine hair so I doubt mine would hold a curl for more than 5 minutes!
A few posts back you asked for beauty recommendations .... if you or your readers are interested, I just bought 'Decleor gradual glow', very subtle realistic 'faux' tan. Can't recommend highly enough ;-)
Also, bought the false nails you recommended from Superdrug and thought they were fab too!

    1. Oh that's fab news thank you x And I'm so pleased you love the false nails - they're amazing aren't they. Revolutionised my life post gels! Does your hair ever take a curl? I know that some super fine hair doesn't curl ever but I would say if you can borrow one it's worth a go! In my experience, even if you bought one from John Lewis and it just didn't work for you, they'd refund it. x

  6. I took the plunge on this gadget a few weeks ago despite the price tag! I have thick curly, frizzy, sucks up humidity like a sponge hair. This machine does take a bit of practice and I have had the odd jammed in section of hair but that's because I had tried too thick a section but luckily it didn't break off. Gives me lovely, controlled, frizz free curls. Love it ♥

  9. Oh man, I was just about to get the Big Hair roller dryer thingy but now I want this! My daughter tried it last year when she was doing work experience in a salon but I'll be honest, the price tag has put me off before now. I didn't know about the JL 3 year guarantee, that's fantastic!
My hair is also wiry & even experience stylists struggle to blow dry it smooth. I'm at the salon tomorrow, I'll ask if they have one to try out! X

    1. I love the Big Hair if you want straight hair but it won't remotely give a good curl. This on the other hand is GENIUS! I actually think it's easier to master than the Big Hair too! It also doesn't seem to get as hot....

  10. Oh that's just great. Now I need one to add to my already massive collection of hair torturerererers. But to be fair, if it's half as good as the Babyliss Big Hair (mine's now in it's 5th year), I'd make the investment. Saw your photo on Insta and thought you'd had it styled professionally. Totally impressed Mrs

  11. ^I actually bought the Babyliss Pro Perfect Curl. Bit pricier, not sure what the difference in gadgets is though as my coiffured curls look very like your picture!

    1. No I'm not sure what the difference is... they only sell the one I got at John Lewis but I'm more than happy with it! How much more is the other one??!

    2. I bought it from Sally Services in Edinburgh but it was still £135! It does the beep thing too if you put in too much hair.
Love your blog and yes you've cost me a fortune since I found you but I get a lot more compliments on my clothes than I used to so it's all good :-)

  12. Love your hair! I have the same one, which bought a few years ago when my hair was longer (haven't used it much now that my hair's shorter). It's a nifty gadget - only thing you have to be careful about is not to grab too much hair at once!

    1. Yes definitely not too much hair although the one I've got won't take it in - it just rejects it!

  13. I got mine from QVC when it was on 3 easy pay. Not for me but for my 6 year old daughter who is obsessed with beachy waves. I find it best without the steam setting as it leaves the curl too soft. Or use any product as it holds well til the next day without. It takes me about 10 minutes to do her shoulder length hair or 5 if it is only the ponytail.

    1. aha maybe that's the difference with the pro, as I don't have a steam setting on mine! Do you use product? It says on mine not to use any product at all.....!

  14. My hairdresser thinks I need this, maybe it should go on my birthday list. Looks great x

  15. Love the curls this gives but still need to smooth the top of my hair first with Big Hair or straighteners, so rarely reach for it tbh. It does give great curl & hold though.
