The Trench.

Which seems like quite a bizarre thing to talk about when we're been sat here on snow watch and the children are saying desperate prayers to the god of weather that it tips it down again soo that they can finally get their Snow Day on Monday (no chance kids, by the way).

When they clearly won't be sporting trenches, as they are about as warm as wearing a tea towel.  And we're definitely talking alternative trenches...not ones that will necessarily keep you dry.  So I can hear you saying, therefore what's the point?

But... but but but, here's the thing, they are a layerer's (someone who likes to layer.. not an actual word but it should be) dream as you can layer both under and over them.  Ok so that does depends on what sort of trench... but even with a quite structured one, you can normally layer a denim or biker jacket under it and a huge scarf over it, which does make it work for most days here - except the absolute chilliest or unless you're spending a lot of time outdoors.

And I happen to prefer the slouchier of trenches.  Ones that are floaty.... I have four of these now.  Two from Acne that I hunted down in the sale two years ago, one from Zara from three years ago and a current investment one that I bought in the sale last week from Matches.

But you definitely don't have to spend a lot (although if you're super tall, you will be less able to find something long on the high street - bar the Zara GEM that I got and wouldn't part with if you paid me).

This however does look good.

Or a bargainous one from H&M.

This is actually a perfect combo of structured with a bit of fluidity.

Another option in a pared back style in the sale at La Redoute.

Similar style and for me the perfect combo of formal and casual on sale at The Outnet.

Going off piste now with a leopard version.

But there are some shorter ones which people may prefer if they're more diminutive. Or if you just prefer this look.

And finishing with the classics.

And here I am in my birthday present (to myself...) I bought it in the sale at Matches with an extra 20% off.  It's reversible so actually two coats in one.

Trench - Preen by Thornton Bregazzi at Matches (sale aw18)
Jumper - Bella Freud (3yrs old)
Skirt - Label Mix at Next (GIFT ss17)
Scarf - Lily & Lionel (GIFT current)
Boots - Grenson from Collen & Clare (aw17)

Tomorrow I will be back with knitwear.  Plain knitwear.  I have listened to those of you who have an aversion to all things slogan so I will be focusing on all things grey.  And then green.  I have a hankering for one of each.

  1. I love my navy long trenches (I have two, one fairly classic and one more modern), so I thought I'd look at the denim one to ring the changes, especially as it would work well into spring. It'sunfortunately out of stock in my size, but hey at least my bank account will thank me!

  2. Love your selection of trench coats! Have you come across any with removable hoods? I’m really hankering for this style! Thanks x

    1. Phase Eight used to do a traditional style with detachable hood. I think they do the same style most years. That being said I find that a hood tends to blow off with a slight gust of wind, especially if there's no way of adjusting them.

  4. The trench by it's mere name tells us it's classic or at least a staple.

  5. While it can be tempting to use the same pair of sneakers for all your walking, running, jogging and gym-going, it’s ideal to have a pair of best women's athletic shoes that you use just for the gym.
