If you think of a dress like a nightie...

... then it's pretty much the perfect outfit for staying at home in.  Seriously think of them as a glorified tent.  Nothing clingy, nothing constricting, nothing that rides up when you sit down, something you can throw on trainers with and go for a long walk without getting all sweaty (now that sunshine has arrived).

We're not talking floor sweeping maxis, we're not talking anything really short (although if you've got the knees go for it but I would say that weather wise something slightly longer may be a bit warmer) - I would go for either a midi or a midaxi (the latter is a stupid fashion term for long midi!).

And the best thing is, these are so wearable afterwards.  Perfect with a jumper over the top and boots into the Autumn or for cooler days now.  I'm obviously a huge fan with a biker and ankle boots or trainers.  Just wear on its own with my beloved cowboy boots.  Take on holiday with sandals - clearly something to just dream about right now.  The ideal option for a light stroll and for not feeling too over or underdressed in.

You also needn't spend a fortune.  There's definitely something for all budgets.

This is the one I bought last year which is now in the sale...

ASOS DESIGN Tall Exclusive trapeze dress was £38 now £28.50

They also do in Curve but alas not petite or regular length - £38

I bought another one last Summer (see below) - a superbly flattering shape for pretty much everyone, although the arms are quite bouffant so if you're very petite they may overwhelm you.

ASOS DESIGN Tall exclusive trapeze maxi dress in a leopard spot £38

Similar in another animal print again at ASOS.

ASOS DESIGN midi smock dress £32

ASOS DESIGN shirred tiered ditsy print dress £39

Another super summery and feminine style which you can adrogynise (not a word but it should be be) with chunky boots or trainers.  Adopt a boho vibe with tan cowboy boots.

Reclaimed Vintage inspired tiered dress in floral print £38

Vero Moda Square Neck Maxi Dress was £48 now £19

Longer sleeved and living up to the nightie theory perhaps... BUT with a pair of gladiator sandals or tan cowboy boots, this would be pretty epic for swanning around in.

YAS festival floral sheer maxi dress was £75 now £37.50

ASOS DESIGN shirred bustier dress £38  Now this is probably too long for most if you're looking for a midi length but is ideal for those who are taller.  I've basically thrown it in here because it's 100% cotton and finding a reasonably priced dress that isn't polyester is tricky.

Some perfect options at Warehouse now.

Floral puff sleeve midi dress from Warehouse £46

Another from Warehouse - perfect for all year round.  Wear with boots in the Winter, trainers now and sandals into the Summer.

Spot print tiered midi dress was £52 now £25

If you're looking for looser versions, some great options at H&M - again, I have very similar from a couple of years ago - I either wear mine loose or belt them to give them more shape.  In fact, it turns them into completely different dresses.  Looser - more prairie boho style and with a belt, easy to throw a blazer on with for a dressier look.

Balloon Sleeved Dress from H&M £34.99

Chiffon Dress £34.99 again H&M

And in a brighter colourway again £34.99

Puff sleeve dress again H&M £17.99

And there are some plain ones...

In black - same as the pink one above, £17.99 from H&M

This one I absolutely love.

LF Markey Kelvin Trapeze Midi Dress £210

But this has to be the bargain of the day from Warehouse.  A veritable FROCK - that your husband will hate, that your children will laugh out but who cares.  This will be the most comfortable thing you own.  Throw on for any occasion - admittedly limited at the minute...but actually you will get a lot of wear out of at the mo - perfect with slippers, birkies, trainers or boots.  Sandals when the weather gets warmer.   Trust me, you'll thank me.

Trapeze tiered midi dress from Warehouse was £42 now £18

And here I am in my two that I have from ASOS.

Dress - ASOS (ss19)
Bag - Campomaggi from Plumo (about 11yrs ago)
Boots - Golden Goose from Net a Porter (sale ss19)

Dress - ASOS Tall (aw19)
Belt - Vintage from The Thorpeness Emporium
Bag - Hill & Friends X Label Mix (from paid partnership ss20)
Sandals - Birkenstock from Universe of Us (current)

And so whether or not you're in need of a frock, hopefully there'll be one here or at the very least, it will be inspiration to crack one of yours out from years gone by.

I will be back with something else to inspire us in these current random times.
