Maybe there's something in the Parisian goes Navajo

Well who would have thunk it?  Following on from my brief obsession the other day at River Island with the fringed suede jacket (which I have shelved not disposed of... it's going in the "sale" pile...) and me joking about it not quite fitting in with my wannabe sleek, pared back Parisian look (which I appreciate I flunk a lot of the time), what should I come across in a magazine?

A new Saint Laurent ad with......

oh yes, none other than a fringed bag.

Now you may recall that a couple of months ago I covered fringe bags in a blog.  And concluded that whilst I was a total fashion magpie (a more palatable word than victim I feel), I wasn't going to indulge in the fringed bag "trend" as you can't do all of the trends all of the time.  Dungarees were going to be my thing this season.

Well DARN YOU SAINT LAURENT.  Not a dunga in sight but there you go, flaunting the fringed bag that I eschewed as not wanting.

Hmmm.

Erm.

And no I haven't bought it.  Yet.

And I so won't be buying the Saint Laurent version which is an eye watering four figures.  (not even low four figures at that)  Read it and weep.

Saint Laurent Emmanuelle Medium bag £1680

Personally I don't have that much money to even begin to start spending on a bag and even if I did, I think (I know) I'd go for something more classic.  Now I say that, but is it perhaps that the fringe bag is set to be a classic?  Even so, I still don't have the best part of £2k to spend on a bag.

I have found similar much cheaper though, fear not.

Rebecca Minkoff Fiona Fringed Bucket Bag £240 (from Saks 5th Avenue so not sure about taxed etc but they do deliver to the UK...).  In tan or black.  (is it wrong to say I think I might LOVE the tan.... is that proper Pocahontas stylee though....?  Should I be guided by Saint Laurent and stick with the black?)

Slightly odd shiny photo here.... it doesn't look like that online and I have tried a gazillion different pics of this but they all look pants.

But I have to say find of the day is at Reiss with the Stevie Fringed Leather Bucket Bag £169   I think at a glance and to the untrained eye (ie The Husband let's say) they would have no clue that there was any difference between this and the Saint Laurent version.  Bar the glaringly obvious £1500.

Well I say say find of the day... clearly it's only a find if you want to spend even that much on a bag and some may feel that it's still a lot to spend on what may be a one season wonder.

In that case, I've scoured online and found more that really are worth considering.

ASOS Suede Fringed Shoulder bag with leather strap £38

Another black one in suede.  A real statement piece this one.

Fringe leather bag from Mango £80.99

Smaller now and we've migrated to tan and gone back to leather.

Pieces Fringed Across Body Bag £22

Love this one from Mango.  No I really REALLY like this one.

Fringed Suede Bag £89.99

A smaller version in a darker shade also at Mango £53.99

Orange Leather Fringed Bucket Bag £65 from River Island if statement colour as well as statement fringing is up your street.

Blush Fringe Detail bag £20 was £25 from Dorothy Perkins (clearly not leather but it looks like it could be)

Cream leather fringed bag £45 from River Island

Slightly different from Mango - a nod to a fringe... love this.

Fringed Leather Bag £107.99

I have saved my best till last though.  These are the best of all worlds for me - fringing, but not all over.

Suede Tassle Hobo Bag from Topshop £65

In khaki

And in stone

So have you been tempted by the fringed bag?  Have I missed the boat on this one and chosen the wrong trend this season?  Is it set to be the next classic bag?  Or am I more tempted by the fringed jacket?

Hiawatha eat your heart out.  If it's good enough for Hedi, I'm thinking it's good enough for me.....

  1. Woohoo! I bought that TopShop bag at the start of the season (in black) and now feeling like a winner! Still sorely tempted by the lush Reiss one - or can you have too much of a good thing? There are enough differences, I feel. One is smart, one very dressed down, one suede, one leather. Am I just clutching at straws now?

    1. Hell no I think they're both very different...! (and if you can justify it that means I'm one step closer to being able to as well!)

  3. I'm not a huge fan of fringe. The only think I have in my wardrobe with fringe is a blue DVF bag (which is gorgeous) and it has a fringe tassel on it - which I usually take off. My red flapper dress is a bit fringy, right enough. Having said that I do like the cream bag from River Island that you show here. Very nice! Lorraine x

  7. Not remotely tempted by boho and cowgirl, but having found the perfect tan suede sandals (in, yes, New Look of all places) this little baby literally flew into my bag. http://uk.accessorize.com/view/product/uk_catalog/acc_1,acc_1.7/7892412200

    1. All R&B bags are fab. Our local (the original store no less) shut down recently. SOB. AHa now I've been told to starve her of everything but the Royal Canin as she's just being a fussy monkey which the smaller breeds can be..... and it seems to be working..... !

  11. I think you're right to look at high street options for a fringed bag as it isn't a trend I see lasting into next year.
But as you seem to choose your posher bags so wisely (you obviously get lots of wear out of them and they often 'make' an outfit) I wiuld LOVE you to write a post about 'investment' handbags... Please!

  12. Love the Saint Laurent bucket bag, so many key trends looking good in this one bag. I think you will cave, YOLO right?

I tried a fringed bag recently but the fringe was too long and too much for me. I'm still in the hunt though. I just bought a couple of pairs of flat sandals (same style, 2 different colors) with fringe, Lucky Brand 'Wekka.' Perfect amount of fringe. Also, a really cool gold-toned cuff with longish fringe. It's a statement piece, but I love to wear it on its own with a simple one-piece like a jumpsuit, romper or maxi dress. And I still love the fringe on my Isabel Marant x H&M boots from a couple of years ago. Fringe looks amazing in footwear because of the constant movement.

  13. Is it bad that the tan ones remind me of Dougal from the Magic Roundabout? :)

    ReplyDelete
  14. Ha ha Dougal!

I think the term is "pared down boho", just a little bit! I find full Navajo a bit much, great for the desert but not Norfolk! I have a grey cross body bag with tassels from last year that I got in the ASOS sale, it goes with everything. It was a £40 real leather bargain and I use it loads. I find too much boho too fussy, so probably won't go for the full on fringing... I might reserve the right to change my mind, though.

  17. I'm sticking to my No Fringe Policy... luckily the bags don't tempt me at all. What does tempt me is a leather skirt with loooooooooong swishy fringes on it, but I haven't been able to find one at non-stratospheric prices yet.
