Projecting

I think it's the weather.  The reason that we all So Cranky at the moment.  Short of booking a flight tomorrow (and believe me, I may have spent the best part of a couple of hours the other day trying to do just that to no avail), I have instead turned my attention to full on Summer garb.  Clothing that you can really only wear when the sun comes out.  There is nothing intermediate about these - it needs to be sunny.  I'm not saying it needs to be 30 degrees but this ridiculous rain we're having at the moment is a no go for this sort of clothing.

As the husband said when I showed him.. "what - clothing made from tea towels?".  I give up.  But I'll be honest, I can see where he's coming from...(weeps).... it's definitely a newer look that has gained popularity in the last couple of years (my exotic jaunts to Ireland and Suffolk last year did not inspire me to look further afield for new Summer clothes, I'm not going to lie) and one that has filtered down to the more mainstream (ie me).

Starting today with the main contenders although they are at the the toppier end price wise (but bear with me...).

Top of my pick would be Cecilie Copenhagen.  Now the only downside to this is that we've left it too late to order most of the good bits.  Yes, this sells out in minutes.  It was on my "list of things to do once the weather got better".  Well that was monumentally dumb.

But but but I have found some.  Much digging and I have located some at Boutique 1 (never heard of them but an hour of my life lost, suffice to say.  Good luck with that peeps).  Order immediately if you want them.  Free returns.   Postage isn't cheap but then it's cheaper than getting a train to London...

Cecilie Copenhagen Cotton Shorts £42

And adore this dress.

Marrakech Maxi Dress £193

But I think I may prefer this one... The Shirt Dress £233  (this I would seriously consider with ankle boots...)

A different colourway now at Matches.

Scarf jacquard long sleeved dress £208

And more colour options and some different styles.

Dark Blue Printed off the shoulder top from CC at Libertys £95

Off the shoulder top £105  OK.. now from what I can see from waaaay too long perusing online and these are the same colour.  (actually I'm not sure now.  My eyes have gone funny and I need wine).

And I've found the matching shorts at Browns... £40 (free delivery at the moment.) I think they're matching... maybe they're not....

Love the matching culottes £105  These definitely match something!

Next up - and we're upping the ante price wise but oh my lord these are gorgeous - Dodo Bar Or, an Israeli brand.

Dodo Bar Or Plisse embroidered cotton mini dress £225

Loving the jumpsuit at Dodo Bar Or as well.  Dare I go this short?

Dodo Bar Or Tasseled Jumpsuit £240

And a gorgeous top (although I have to say, in for a penny, in for a pound and why not go to the whole hog with the above jumpsuit.  I personally find shorts randomly easier to wear than mini skirts).

Dodo Bar Or Tasseled Cotton Gauze Top £145  The top though, is all sorts of gorgeous.

And the matching mini skirt £180

But then there are the dresses...

Black Jacquard Nadin Tunic Dress £320

Or my absolute favourite but an eye watering price for a throw on Summer dress... *wracks brain to see if she could wear this out more formally or tries (in vain) to work out if she could justify this for all the dress down occasions she has...*

Pettra eyelet-detail dress £385

Also the Mona Maxi Dress from a great website called Modus Operandi (sign up for their email for 15% off..) £300

Or - my perfect length, the Mandy dress £220 from Avenue 32 or £200 from Matches (Except that it's not in stock, which says it all...it's coming back in though.... )

Another new brand that I came across last year was Pampelone - slightly more traditionally Boho I would say.  This we should definitely be able to recreate on the high street although to be fair, the prices are much less than above - perhaps more wearable than the above newer looks.

Full length or mini - alas there seems to be nothing in the middle.  For me, even I would be happy to get a *bit* of leg out...

Pameplone Voiles Maxi Dress £95 from Very Exclusive  Both dresses come in the blue or red versions.

Or short - fine if you're diminutive - hedgerow on show potentially, if you're tall.

Pampelone Bardot Dress £85

This is all the top end.  Top top top end.  As much as we would all love to spend that much - it's a lot on High Summer clothes.  Well... for one dress?  I guess if you can justify gazillions of wear out them and you have the budget... I'm still trying to get my head around them - I know I love them and they tick the box for me in that they're not too colourful and over embroidered.

But I am definitely on the look out for high street versions.  Get me a glass of wine and a laptop and I'm off.

So this is not what I want to be wearing in the sunshine - this is in fact my outfit from Saturday when there was actual sunshine and not monsoon like rain.

Untitled

Blue boyfriend shirt - Boden
Navy Lucie Loungers - Wyse London
Navy merino crew neck - Uniqlo
White Superstar sneakers - Golden Goose

And we have the outfit from today.. in the rain... and the hail....

Untitled

Black thin knit jumper - Tommy Hilfiger
Black wide leg crop trousers - Me+Em
Khaki jacket - hush
Black Mario bag - Jerome Dreyfuss
Red Superstar sneakers - Golden Goose

I am now on the hunt for cheaper options... watch this space, I shall hopefully be back tomorrow, amidst the pouring rain with some Summer sunshine (in the form of clothes if not actual rays).  The husband is on his way home with tapas from Waitrose (BLISS) and the children are running feral somewhere around the house - we went to see Eddie the Eagle which is amazing by the way and got home late.  I am now on a mission to unearth some high street gems for us all...  (any pointers gratefully received - already know everything is OOS at H&M).  How boho do you go?

  1. Great post - I think you are right about trying to find high street alternatives - I have just ordered this dress and I love it but it is quite dressy and I am not sure where I could wear it - I was half thinking of wearing it to a wedding i have in Oct - anyway see what you think. Love your blogs - you have changed the way I dress (for the better) xx

  2. When I was last in Israel you could get those dresses made from those scarves very cheaply. I got an ankle length one in the red/white combo for just under £20. Very cool in the heat. Xx

  3. Why not order from the actual cecile Copenhagen website? Loads of choice but expensive p and p. I have three dodo bar items, size down on dresses, all lovely thick material, go on treat yourself!

  4. I just picked up the moonflower shirt that is similar (wearable Boho) from an Australian brand caled bohemian traders. $129. The have watching shorts.
Think the addres is bohemiantraders.com.au or similar. Also, there is an oz blogger named tash sefton from the blog 'they all hate us' who rocks the dodo bar or with distressed denim. You would approve.

  5. Wouldn't buy anything Israeli for ethical reasons. What a surprise they have appropriated the keffiyyeh along with Palestinian land.

  6. As a leftie in my youth I find this look strangely unappealing. I picture Yassir Arafat and the PLO and people marching in demonstrations. It does trivialise the scarf, and I know people are very passionate about the symbolism of it.

Good old gap have a nice one I just tried this week in SF - lashing of fake tan required on legs in my case - I may just have to snap it up in case it sells out by the time I stop thinking about it and suddendly decide I must have it in my life! - http://m.gap.com/product.html?dn=gp177969002&dv=1&shopid=0&pdn=gc13658&outlet=false

  10. Adore Moda Operandi, they have some really fab things! I've also ordered from their "trunk shows" before where they offer future season offerings from independent designers. I've been eyeing the gorgeous flat mules from their Mari Giudicelli trunk show but at Acne-level prices (and US only delivery), it won't be coming home with me.

  11. Not my bag either, as someone else wrote too PLO for me. That being said, the tops and shorts in muted colours weren't too bad. I've seen loads of scarves in this sort of pattern (definitely not for me), Lala Berlin comes to mind for those.

  12. I can manage a watered down version of this, so a peasant top with denim but I would definitely not do a full on matching shorts or floaty dress. I like the CC stuff, the blues tones it down a bit, but I think the tassels are very PLO!

  13. Another blogger was wearing a Cecilie Copenhagen top, she had a white blouse on underneath it though, which in my opinion didn't look right. I think these items are definitely for a boho summer look, rather than office wear. Would need a lot of sunshine!! x

  14. Isn't individuality a wonderful thing. I love love love the dodo bar or top and skirt. Other people think it is ridiculous. Some find in politically insensitive. Thank goodness we are not all the same. ☺

    1. And isn't it lovely to have a forum to express our views, so thank you kat....sometimes we might find other ideas a bit challenging but that can be a good thing. And therein ends the lesson for today. Bring on the clothes. (And ginny clearly gives your little boy so much comfort. Man's best friend indeed)

  16. Love the look of Cecilie Copenhagen and rushed to get a feel of them in Liberty's a few weeks ago. The material is much more substantial than I'd imagined, not floaty and cool enough for a summer dress. Funnily enough, I immediately wondered about buying a keffiyeh (or a couple of tea towels) from a market and making my own: but we know that won't happen. That mirrored dress from Asos is like meeting an old friend. I had an orange one, from Miss Selfridge (with mirrors too) in 1976 - wonder if it's still in the loft?

  18. I do love this look but can find it difficult to wear, not sure if it's to do with being blond(?) or just that it looks better on other people. Feels a bit like I am dressing up in National Costume!! I dip my toe in for sunny holidays though, especially with accessories. I did see some lovely pieces in Monsoon yesterday, particularly this top:

Substantial fabric and not too floaty. Thanks for the inspo xx

  21. The CC long sleeved, off shoulder tops are really comfortable and lovely to wear. I have one in the black/black (who'd a thought?) colour way and I have had so much wear out of it. They are thick fabric though, probably too hot for summer days. The shorts are ....short, need gamine thighs to wear them! Which you have!!

  23. I bought the Off the Shoulder one weeks ago and it is currently languishing in my Wardrobe. I swear it mocks me every time I reach for a jumper. I thought it would be ok with White shorts, but actually its a bit too heavy. I think it will be better with black shorts ( as per the model) and/or jeans. I think once you have had a child ( or two) Boho is a very forgiving look! I am trying to pack for a week away ( studying) in London and the pile of clothes is growing....this weather????

  24. Haven't European teens been wearing these scarves for only fashion reasons for a long time now? I'm American, so don't really know, but remember seeing them. I assumed they'd be acceptable co-opted fashion choices by now. I don't know how it would be perceived; I always worry I'll offend or look silly. I love the fabric though. I got several of the scarves at a Turkish fest and do wear them from time to time. Spotted CC last summer I think on someone's blog and loved it, but too pricey. I do think they would be easy to sew! I assume when they trickle down to HM they will seem more ubiquitous and less appealing.
