A major item in my ideal Spring Outfit.

And I am over the moon to say that it's not one I actually need. Yes, I have shopped well over the last couple of years (and some of mine are at least as old as that if not older) and have a handy little stash of my beloved navy blazers.

For me, this is a classic bar none. The ideal Spring/Summer and Autumn outfit finisher. This year, I'm planning for one of my staple outfits - print blouse or print shell top, either skinny faded or boyfriend jeans (depending on shape of top) and trainers (oh I shall report back on them tomorrow!) or ballet flats/loafers. The best thing is, they also work for the evening - just fling on a pair of strappy heeled sandals or a pair of heeled courts and you're away.

My favourites are single breasted - I think this honestly works best for everyone whether you're blessed with norks or not. I also like a military style but if you were only going for one, then a classic single or double button fitted version would be my call.

I actually don't mind one in a suity fabric but think they do perhaps work better for casual wear if there is texture to the material.

I was surprised to find that there aren't that many out there at the moment. But this is the best of what I could find and some are even in the sale still.

Starting with Reiss. This is a perfect casual addition to your wardrobe - I love a knitted jacket, in fact I wore my old camel Whistles one today.

Now this is an amazing bargain - Summer fitted jacket from Reiss at £69 down from £225 A more suity fabric but still with a bit of texture.

Collection by John Lewis Kate jacket in navy £89 Again a great texture on this jacket and the contrasting button makes it look less worky and more casual.

Navy Textured Jersey Blazer £22 from New Look I believe this is a ponte fabric which has a great texture to it and goes in the washing machine. A perfect starter if you're not quite sure a navy blazer is for you.

Ponte Jacket £71.20 (currently has 20% off) from Boden I love the boxy shape of this. It's not for everyone but it's perfect for shell tops and over boyfriend jeans - the dimensions and proportions work really well. Interestingly (or not) I've just realised that the print of the skirt in the below pic is exactly the same as the tiles I'm looking at for my bathroom floor.

Gold Button detail at River Island. This is a more relaxed boyfriend style fit which I quite like the look of with skinny jeans and tee or blouse. I love the idea of putting sneakers with this - it would also look great with a plain loose linen tee.

Frayed Detail Boucle jacket from Mango - in the sale with 50% off now at £39.99 Slightly more detail than a plain navy one but I like the idea of putting a print under this. Alternatively keep it simple with a plain blouse or tee.

I can't believe that there are so few out there to be honest - I did a good reccy today, out shopping and indeed, there aren't that many around. I am positive (she says, fingers crossed) that there will be more coming in, in the next month or so.

However I did spy some proper gems that I will be bringing to you in the next couple of days. I have a shop of two halves to report on..... Can you guess which one? Half of it is fantastic, the other half? Well, Primark quality for infinitely inflated prices...

Finishing with my outfits from yesterday and today. Dodging the rain. I did have an umbrella - the joys of not having to push a buggy or hold a child's hand (the latter I do miss more than the former it does have to be said)

So the New Balance sneakers arrive and I *think* I love. Of course I'm too scared to wear them outside as it's soaking wet everywhere. Don't know what I was thinking today with my popsocks on (clearly I wasn't thinking and hadn't bothered to watch the weather forecast - it was quite sunny when I left the house this morning - obviously I looked like an utter tool come 3pm when it was biblical rain and I hadn't had time all day to go home and get changed. Ho hum.)

Off out tonight for drinks with the girls and a Pampered Chef party. Seeing as we about to lose our kitchen in the next couple of weeks, I shan't be going utensils mad. I can't rave highly enough about their stoneware though. Fear not - tomorrow I shall be back with my shop of two halves......Which is.......?!

And back in my comfort zone.

Proudly presenting item number two of my January purchases. I'm not going to lie to you - I may have been ordering like a maniac (aka woman possessed with needing a new top/dress) from Matches, Whistles and Net a Porter. Me and Mr DHL are on first name terms. Seeing as he's had to come and pick up every single package as well as delivering them. But if you kiss enough sales frogs, one will turn out to be a Prince. (that's purchases by the way - NOT the DHL man)

And here is my Knight in shining armour. I don't have a link as it's now sold out everywhere but this is the best pic I could get. Yes it's safe, no I'm not reinventing the fashion wheel here but it's so so me. I'm out for a very special lunch next week and this is perfect for that outfit - coated skinnies, navy swing coat - the opportunities are endless.

Plus it goes in the washing machine. OH YES. Nothing else i ordered did and whilst I have ended up paying a lot of money (although it was half price) for a polyester top (ouch), it does feel like lovely heavy silk and I'll wear it so much more on a casual basis as I know I can wash it and it's going to come out the same shape as when it went in.

Dare I say, this is also a camping top. Just great with a pair of cut off shorts. Who'd have thought I'd be able to find something so versatile. (to be fair, the amount I did try, I sort of did deserve to)

Now throwing this in there as it is also new but this doesn't count as a purchase.... as it was a birthday present although admittedly I did choose it. It happens to go rather well with the top and also matches the Brompton shoes which I bought in the sale and can't wait to get loads of use out of. Would have been rude not to. The sandals will also go perfectly with that top for the summer but I'm hardly getting loads of wear out of them when we're knee deep in rain at the moment.

That then got me to thinking that there was a pair of shoes in Zara in the sale that I didn't bother buying as clearly they weren't one of my chosen three things but DARN it they would have been fabulous with the bag and my top.....and they were - wait for it..... £12.99. I feel sick typing that. Balls to my being abstemious set of pigging rules - I have missed out on some fabulous shoes. I do now have a total obsession with a pair of blue suede stilettos. You have been warned....

But moving onwards with some other amazing print shell tops that I would get oodles of use out of. Some say if they have a bigger bust they don't suit them - I think it depends on the cut and the darting at the sides. Definitely need trying on. Certainly anything with a very much higher neck is probably going to be a no. Clearly not a problem I am lucky enough to have hence these are probably my favourite shaped top.

This isn't necessarily the bargain of the century but for me, these are such versatile tops, it's worth considering.

Alternatively they do have a new season one which isn't silk and so possibly isn't slightly as dressy but it does go into the washing machine so personally I'd get loads more wear out of (alternatively I would put it on a handwash but don't tell anyone I said that)

Whistles come up trumps as per usual and whilst this is 3/4 length sleeves and a slightly higher neckline than I would normally consider for a shell top, I love the green of this which would work easily as well with black and/or navy. Ditto camel. Absolutely adore this print, shape and colourway.

Whilst i'm slightly off piste I may as well go knee deep into the powder and shove this in as I love it. This definitely comes under the heading "blouse" (seeing as it has buttons) but when I do my "Would Dr Nikki Alexander wear it?" test, this comes out with an A*.

Thinking about the pastel themes which are everywhere this Spring, this from Ted Baker is gorgeous and still in the sale.

Ted Baker Rubea Tea Party Print shirt now £50 was £99 This is an absolutely ideal purchase for the new season. It's like a fabulous version of the one I bought from Forever 21 last year.

Great Plains have just released their Spring collections and there are some gorgeous numbers there to explore. Staying on the pastel theme:-

Chevron Candy top £40.00 in two colourways.

This is slightly more ditsy but I think would look great with a navy blazer, distressed boyfriend jeans and a pair of sneakers..

So there we have a selection of a few that you could easily wear now on a night out but would be just as useful come the Spring for wearing during the day (I'm not saying you couldn't wear them during the day now but it's ever so slightly chilly perhaps.....)

Here is my outfit from today. To say I am over the rain is an understatement. There is no surprise in this, I lose my rag with the weather a lot, particularly at this time of year. If it snows, I make no apology for having a complete sense of humour failure. Just putting it out there now.

So I did cave yesterday and ordered my third and final purchase of January - the New Balance Trainers from ASOS. I have since discovered they come up small so as I'm usually a 6.5 and ordered a 7, they probably aren't going to fit. GAH! On the upside I think there is definitely a trainer shaped hole in my wardrobe so watch this space....

I am now obsessed with needing a new pair of blue shoes though.... and something else from the other day. I am busy creating my wish list for February. As you do.

It's the post no-one has been waiting for.....

So I am not well known for my love of a trainer. Ok so that's slightly unfair, as I've worn Cons for as long as I can remember, even had a pair of Stan Smiths back in the day (these have been rereleased for 2014 but are like proverbial rocking horse poo - good luck finding a pair of you fancy them... however there are other options..), ditto some Pumas and have loved my Ash sneakers both flat and wedge for years now.

However a pair of trainers that actually look like you could do sport in them? Nah. Dear god no. Wrong on every level.

Until.... I saw a pic of the goddess Phoebe Philo in Vogue last year. In a pair of... cough... Nike Air Max (I'm pretty sure that's what they were - I was more interested in the colour to be fair and was blown away by the fact I actually really liked the look.)

Well clearly it was a funny time of the month and this wasn't going to fly so I tried to ignore it.

But then reading this in The Guardian last year when the world was going Jenna Lyons from JCrew mad (me included - proper hero worship here), I knew that it was a slippery slope.

1. Don't divide your wardrobe into smart and casual, but mix them up

"For example, if you have one of our flip-hem wool skirts, you can wear it smart and flirty with a blazer and shirt and jewels and a heel. But you can also wear it dressed down, with an oversized sweatshirt and New Balance trainers."

But I haven't caved. It does seem that the rest of the fashion world (not that I would include myself in that sphere but do still take inspiration from it) have already succumbed to the lure of comfy footwear aka the proper looking trainer (not sure that's remotely what they're called actually, but that'll do for me)

And to be fair, that has to be a big part of the draw no? Fabulously comfortable shoes that you can walk for miles in (can you see where I'm going with this - tis a classic journey of justification for me as per usual - you wouldn't expect anything less, would you?). But still being as on trend as you can be.

Now I'm not sure I can go Nike Air Max - I think that might be a step too far but i'm putting my toe in the water and seriously contemplating the New Balance below.

Firstly however, I have a confession to make. I could be making the biggest faux pas in the world with these. It appears, unsurprisingly, that all trainers have names. Most have names and numbers. Which mean absolutely diddly squat to me. I could be showing you the most untrendy trainers on earth as I have gone straight for looks and colour as opposed to make and model. Yes this is the footwear equivalent of me buying a new car. Feel free to correct me if I'm making a massive error.

So starting with what is to me Way Out of my comfort zone. So far away from what I'd usually buy (bar the colour of course - clinging to the edge of my comfort zone by my fingernails, that'll be navy) that I'm consoling myself with the fact that if it doesn't work out, I could actually wear these to the gym.

Truth be told I am (unfortunately) in the market for a new pair of "proper" trainers. This is up there with underwear shopping for me. Dull as dishwater. The last time I bought a pair was two years ago and for the first time ever I knew what The Husband feels like when I ask him which pair of shoes out of a selection he likes best. "They all look the same" is the general response. And that was what I said to the gentleman in the running shop. "They all look the same, can I just have the cheapest?". I honestly thought he was going to pass out with disgust. The thought of having to repeat this hideously traumatic experience is another big plus in purchasing a pair of these practical looking monkeys as they may well end up accompanying me to the gym (usually for coffee, I'll fess up).

Here is what is top of my list of potentials.

New Balance 410 navy/burgundy trainers £55 They're navy. I could live without the burgundy edge, I'll be honest. But I can't find any plain navy that don't look like they should only be worn with gymwear.

New Balance 420 Vintage grey trainers £60 These are a gorgeous shade but seeing as I am actually planning on doing some walking in them (kids, we're going to be walking home from school soon), the colour perhaps isn't the most practical for me (who am I and what has someone done with me? Practical? Since when did I care?)

Nike Air Pegasus 83 Trainers £67 Ok so I did "say" I wasn't going to do the Nike Air thingy but oh the colours of these are so so so pretty.

Nike Blaze low red trainers £65 Moving onto slightly more familiar ground. Less running track.

Love them in this colour.

However I do think my absolute favourites are the navy leather Nike Blazer mid trainers. I have hankered after these all season and to be honest would have got oodles of wear out of them - seeing as they're not what I was originally discussing at all and are much more in keeping with a trad pair of hitops which one shouldn't work up any sort of sweat in. They are now in the sale - are they in my size? Well obviously not.

Now moving back to the total classics. Comfort zone restored. These are a great common ground for those who would like comfort but don't feel the need for the full on trainer look.

I don't have a pair of the Virgos and nearly bought a pair last year but I didn't as I managed to snaffle the grey and gold leather pairs for £12.99 each from Gap. And guess what, I SO wish I'd listened to my instincts and bought the Virgos. Yes we have now swayed hilariously off topic - ok so we're vaguely discussing sneakers... does that work?

Not sure if I could justify another pair seeing as I do have a pair of Thelmas in this colour and a pair of Virgins in gunmetal which have paid for themselves 20 times over - me having managed to bag them for about £40 in a sale years ago when they were the epitome of uncool.

So........ Are you going in any sneaker direction this year? I fear I may cave. I can honestly feel myself pressing BUY. But will it be the blazers or the new balance. One thing I do know I am definitely definitely starting off with navy. Know thy trainer limits would be my motto. (although the Nike Air thingymajigs are such a gorgeous shade.... that goes with nothing I own.......)

Let's pretend it's not going to probably snow this week..

... and start thinking about Spring jackets. I am obsessed with a jacket as I *may* have pointed out. Yes, this Winter was the year of the coat for me but I can already feel my jacket itch needing a good scratch. And I've been thinking about a major part of my Spring look is going to be dedicated to the blouse, jeans and a jacket.

I've had some ideas for blouses, I've got lots of jeans (but one can never ever have too many so watch this space....) and clearly I've got jackets (she admits through gritted teeth...) BUT they are just so useful. So many of them can cover a myriad of bases - they're fab to dress up or dress down. As easy to wear with sneakers (and yes I DO have a trainer - cough - thread on the way. With difficulty) as they are for a night out with killer heels.

Now I appreciate that it's apparently going to snow on Thursday. Harrumph. Well, I'm going to do you all a favour. I'm going to order the 9 year old a new snow suit and some new sledges so it will not snow. You are all incredibly welcome and it does mean that we can have a proper gaze at some lovely jackets for the Spring.

Firstly - CALL OFF THE DOGS. There is a pic on M&S that isn't that bad. TIs a miracle, tis truly a miracle but I love the way they've styled this jacket. I have a jacket this shape that I got from Wallis nearly 10 years ago and it comes out every year. I love it for over a dress for a smarter look but it's equally as fab over skinny jeans turned up and little sandals in the summer. Is the perfect shape to balance out a pair of fitted jeans on the bottoms. For me, the proportions work perfectly. This has a very vintage vibe to me - the colour, the shape and the texture all screams Dior from the 60s.

Plus there is 20% off all clothing and homewares at M&S today. Go forth and shop (I fear I may have to buy those pointed toe shoes with a block heel. ooh white or leopard, white or leopard....?)

Staying with a vintage vibe, this from Florence & Fred is an amazing bargain. Totally Miu Miu inspired from this season - I don't think anyone would ever guess it was from Tesco.

F&F Limited Edition Textured Cocoon coat £50.

But enter FFSHOP14 at the checkout for £10 off a £50 spend which makes this coat £40. Absurdly tempted even though I neither want nor need (like that's ever had anything to do with it..) a pink coat....

Staying with a longer style jacket, I absolutely LOVE this blue one from Warehouse.

Warehouse Tweed Zip off Biker Jacket £95. This is ideal as it's actually two coats in one - you can zip the bottom section off to make a shorter style jacket. How completely perfect is that? Love the cornflour shade blue. If I had a choice, it would definitely be blue over pink for me (although the Miu Miu F&F one is growing on me by the minute..)

A Marant inspired quilted number from M&S again (so with 20% off). These are very marmite for sure, but I am a huge fan and can't wait to wear my two I have from last year. Pretty sure you wouldn't think this was from M&S.

The following black and white ones from M&S are stunning. The perfect Spring cover ups, that you could just as easily wear to a wedding or Christening. But fling on over jeans, a linen tee and cons and hey presto. Instant chic. I actually want them all. 20% off today. DARN you M&S with your temptation.....

M&S Geometric Print Jacket now £47.20 Ditto to everything I said above.

And a longline version of the jacket. M&S Collection though? Absolutely no idea where this collection is supposed to sit, as opposed to Autograph or Limited Edition (which did used to be called Limited Collection - as if shopping in M&S wasn't confusing enough... does anyone think they're actually getting it right? They have some truly truly amazing products but I think it's just too difficult for the majority of people to navigate and they miss so much.)

Finishing with my last M&S gem and whilst this doesn't really fit into this category, it's such a bargain and it "is" a jacket. Great for those casual days - really love the simplicity of this.

M&S Collection Textured Biker Jacket now £23.60 I'd wear this over the outfit I have on today (see below) Perfect for off duty days, drawstring baggies, wedge trainers or hi tips, longsleeved top and big scarf.

On a similar textured theme, this is a great reduction from Jigsaw.

If money were no object though (and to be honest, the jackets I have that I've had for years and years have been worn to death and if we're doing the old money per wear argument, these really are a great investment) this would be mine in an instant. I totally and utterly adore it. I love absolutely everything about it - the colour, the texture, the shape, the embellishment. I also love with the checked shirt underneath (hmm food for thought......)

So there we have a round up of some jackets at the beginning of the season. As with all the things I've covered, I think they definitely are worth exploring in more detail (whether or not this happens with the trainers - guffaw - we'll have to wait and see)

Me today - I learnt to make pasta. Yup, from scratch, little tortellini - was absolutely fantastic. Can't wait to try it out this weekend with the family. Such fun and think it will be an amazing thing to do together. Not entirely sure whether we'll have any success with gluten free pasta for my poor coeliac 9 yr old but we can give it a go (anyone who has any suggestions for recipes on this front - I'd be ridiculously grateful for pointers!)

Dress was suitably Scottish looking I feel. Complete coincidence but a happy one. The 9 year old did ask me why I was wearing an umbrella. Which was great.
