Grey.....

....grey and more grey.  I have become consumed with the need for grey trousers.  Had a good sort out of my wardrobe yesterday (I say a good sort out - this basically involves throwing lots of clothes on the floor in a tantrum.  I haven't finished yet), after deciding that I didn't like any of my clothes and obviously, that's not true.  I absolutely love my khaki trousers and teamed with black and white - of which I have some really great bits, I have some lovely outfits.

But I am in dire need of a pale grey pair of trousers to compliment the plethora of black and white that I have.  Not forgetting navy.  So I do have a pair of Topshop joggers that I bought in the sale which I've been wearing but - and here's something I NEVER get to say.. they're too long!  They're cuffed and too long and so have a vague pantaloon effect on my calves.  You know when you think something is ok and then you realise - no, actually it irritates me hugely?  That's these.  I feel vaguely like I have a tweed hazmat suit on.  So I should get them altered - just have the cuff cut off to make them straight at the bottom (or something sewy like that).

Why would I want to do that and why am I so fascinated with finding the perfect pair?  If you have a wardrobe full of great neutrals but you're just not feeling the love with your outfits, then have a look at these for some inspiration.

See how useful just the addition of grey trousers would be?  I know some of them are quite wintery but replace a jumper for a tee and for me, this is a very new look to our (I now appreciate reliable...) jeans.
Starting with these which I have ordered and already sent back to Topshop.  They are short.  Much shorter than this on me, so if you're shorter than 5ft10, they'll be perfect on you.

Oh and I appreciate I've been tucking into the food and wine this Easter but I had to size up to a 12.  So they were both short and tight.  A special moment.  Which is a shame as they're pretty darn lovely. Mensy Tonic Trousers £40

Or maybe these from Mango... I am sure they had some in the sale that I should have bought which are obviously long gone now.  FOOL.

Pleated Suit Trousers £49.99 from Mango

Then I saw these... perhaps...

Noisy May Tall Soft Tailored Trousers £24 (they also do them in petite and regular online).

In the sale at Y.A.S again in tall.. tailored straight leg trouser were £35 now £17.50

A darker charcoal at Sisley and they look very cropped which is great if you're shorter and struggle to get anything actually cropped.

Sisley Cropped Trousers £55

Then slightly different at Gap with the twill stripe girlfriend chinos in washed black £39.95

Now I fear these may not be aimed at our demographic but I think these could so work.  I have a feeling they're squarely pitched at the Nana brigade but I'd be very happy in these with a white tee, black blazer or biker and sneakers or skate shoes.   A respectable Nana outfit by anyone's standards.

Silver Grey Drawstring waist joggers £28.00

They also have a linen pair but I have to say, I think the ones above are better... (the ones above go in the tumble drier... the ones below will need ironing.  A lot.  Which means that they would get worn once and sit in the utility room until next year).

Pure Linen Tapered Leg from M&S £25

However, if we're looking at jogger style then, call off the dogs, I have the bargain of the day right here, from Gap.  So as I mentioned, I was thinking about having mine altered...

Well, this is a no brainer then.  These will cost less to buy than it would to alter the other pair.

Flannel joggers in heather grey from Gap were £35 now £11.99  Went to see if they had them in store tonight and they don't so I shall be ordering online.

And finally - yes obviously I've gone off piste and ordered joggers which a) I didn't want and b) are very similar to the Topshop ones I have already have.  So these are the obvious choice then yeah?  Cabin.  Fever...

ASOS Premium Tailored Jogger with Zip Detail was £38 now £15... (well it's rude not to at that price isn't it?  Plus I'm a sucker for the word Premium.  A marketer's dream, that's me)

So I have ordered the above, as my dungarees arrived and look..well... just meh.  Severely gutted as none of them looked remotely as good as my black ones (which clearly I should just wear more...duh).

I bought both Monki wide leg ones from the blog the other day and the midnight one (was lovely but a) too short for me and b) didn't have pockets) and the black one... was a lovely Eileen Fisher linen style - looked loads more expensive than it was but just didn't work on me.  Just too far removed from my style.  I so wanted to love it but looked too try hard.  If that makes sense...

However one great thing has come out of today's blog.  When I was first looking at grey trouser ideas last night, I came across this image.  Inspiration dot com.

Couldn't completely recreate the look but a variation on the theme was good enough for me as I'd remembered a pair of very old wide leg trousers that I got from Zara in the sale for £15 (which I fished out of the pile of clothes on the floor...).  Really high waisted so v out of my comfort zone therefore I don't wear them that much.  But with a new t-shirt from Yunion T that has been burning a hole in my wardrobe, waiting for the warmer weather - I thought they'd provide the perfect alternative to everything else that I'm bored of.

And there was SUN!

White kaftan style tee - Yunion T
Grey wide leg trousers - Zara
Onyx leather jacket - hush
White cracked leather Stan Smiths - adidas
Haworth leather bag - Village England

I still definitely am looking for a peg leg style pair though for the Spring as these are rather on the warm side.  Grey trousers are definitely on the agenda for me.  Anyone else?

  1. If it's in grey it's got my name all over it!
I'm looking for black or extremely dark grey trousers for work (smartish and perhaps cropped)
The cropped River island ones were a no go as too long to be properly cropped on me

  2. Not grey, but I've piled into Mango cropped black and navy trousers, they're fab with thin knits/shirts and stan smiths for work. And have just cut off bottoms grey/black jeans to sort the grey thing out

    1. I need to do that with some jeans I've got... must get them cropped! (did you find it hard to cut them straight... random Q of the day...! I've done it before and it looked they'd been hacked by a rabied dog)

    1. I got them in the black today in a 14!!! Was the only way I could get them to hang at my waist and not cut off circulation to my legs. The fact I'm drinking wine to compensate is not going to help, is it?

  4. Very reminiscent of the 90s which I loved!. Did you get the new look stripe shorts Kat? What's your verdict please

  5. I ordered those gap flannel joggers a few months ago with high expectations, but they were all kinds of awful on me and back they went.

Love the outfit today, great to see the sun as well!

  6. Yes to grey and yes to trousers! Love the Pinterest ones (especially the first and fourth pic - definitely my dream pair!) Been searching forever and haven't had much luck as I have a specific fabric/color in mind and nothing quite comes up to scratch. I think I`ll just fold and order the black (or navy) slouchy joggers from Me&Em instead? Wish they offered those in grey, wouldn't that be just perfect!

    1. Right - I've tried the black joggers from Me+Em and they are EPIC. Perfect for smart and casual. But alas they don't do them in grey - I think it's probably a fabric issue. Grey is a really hard colour to get right!

  7. I have a pair of wide-legged grey trousers from Great Plains from a year ago. They are lovely but, like yours, will be too warm soon. A thinner pair sound good too. I'm just remembering a navy pinstripe pair I had in the 90s from Boden, dress up dress down.

  8. Just bought a pair of tencel, relaxed drawstring joggers in grey from H&M. They also do a khaki. Lovely and soft for Spring /early Summer/ ALL of Summer, probably! They're perfect. I'm still searching for the illusive grey trouser. Tried a pair on in Oasis yesterday. Don't usually go in but they had 20% off, so thought I'd give it a whirl for a change. Not much in there to be honest. They had a grey trouser that looked promising but managed to make me look incredibly wide around the hips. Just too much material. Will explore your ideas and hope that the perfect pair are somewhere amongst this little lot! Thank you.

    1. Oh bugger I should have looked for them today although H&M is always the proverbial needle in a haystack, isn't it?! I never ever ever go into OAsis... I probably should.. I do find the odd thing in John Lewis (the Oasis section!) but I never seem to make it into the actual store!

  12. Just got back from a days shopping (not to mention talking) with my best mate, what did I end up buying but a pair of pale grey trousers from Samsøe and Samsøe, I will need to take them up but only minimally. I'd been after a pair for ages as grey is definitely one of my neutral colours.
Wasn't the only item I ended up with, also bought a grey cardigan (from my favorite Sibin Linnebjerg) and a t-shirt from Rosemunde.
So all in all, bring on the grey!

  13. I hit dungaree gold on ASOS http://www.asos.com/dr-denim/dr-denim-vilde-relaxed-dungaree/prod/pgeproduct.aspx?iid=6127961&clr=Black&SearchQuery=dungaree&pgesize=36&pge=0&totalstyles=153&gridsize=3&gridrow=9&gridcolumn=2 super casual but lovely lovely boyfriend fit. I did audibly guffaw at your post last year talking about the virtues of dungarees... until I tried on these. Have to say, they can't be worn with a jacket, but with a t-shirt and trainers/flip flops I LOVE them. As for the grey trousers, I think it might be the only way for me to wear my biker jacket now... I don't know if you've watched Raised By Wolves? But every time I put it on now my hubby calls me Della.... So jeans and biker = no no for me now (if you haven't watched it is is hilarious)

    1. Oh they look AMAZING. But I don't want black. ARRGGHH!!! I might give up. (and no - I need to watch raising wolves.. I also struggle with blue jeans and a biker generally!)

  15. H&M have great pale grey slim/peg leg trousers in at the mo for a measly £14.99 - can be found in their 'workwear' section; very much like some of the ones above, and in different leg lengths (also have them in navy). I've been wearing mine for weeks with a variety of jumpers and Adidas Superstars...

    2. I think I have just been looking at these on the H&M website but cannot for the life of me see them in longer length
      http://www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.0350082003.html
They look fab! Just what I've been looking for but fear they will be too short in a regular length…
Can you help Lyn? or Kat? Thanks very much x

      Delete
    3. Yep, that's them - but I was sure they were stocked in a couple of my local stores in different leg lengths (at the very least in short and regular - not sure about long, but I'm 5'7" and they were quite a bit longer on me than they look on the model. I stupidly bought the regular length then ended up hemming them myself as I wanted them more cropped). They definitely had slim, straight leg and bootcut versions of them, as well as the different colour options. Maybe just try checking out your local store to see what they've got?

    4. Couldn't see them instore today, although our H&M is being refurbed so they've moved to a little store. It's not going to be finished till NOVEMBER!!!

    5. Thanks very much Lyn, that's super helpful! I'm 5'7" too so regular should be fine. I shall go forth and order! And Kat, November?!?! I assume that's the H&M at Bluewater? That's my local too. How can it take so long?! Mind you, website delivery has vastly improved lately...used to be sooo slow. Thanks again to you both x

    6. YES!! I asked the other day. Apparently they're putting another storey in.. not entirely sure how!

  17. Wow! That last inspo pic (leather jacket, grey jumper, grey trews....that is my very inspiration for spring. Love!

Now I need those trousers, or something as close as possible. I am thinking light flannel material (rather than full on sweatpant). Any ideas anyone? Oh I also need the leather jacket but that will most likely be a birthday present.

    2. Yes that Hush jacket is number one on my list! I have wide leg trousers in plain black, and another black pair with a tan leaf print from Warehouse, must get them taken up a bit to wear with trainers. Would love a grey pair too.
