A twist on a classic

Although for most, it might not be a classic.  For some, I know they've not been able to quite get their heads around them.

I'm talking my wardrobe staple of... drum roll.. the biker jacket.  Which usually comes in leather.  But for those of you who find the leather version a tad too Hell's Angels (and I know there are lots of you who do) or for those of you who love the biker so much that you want a variation on the theme, this is for you.

It is jacket season - that is for sure.   Yes we all want to look at those huge, delicious coats (hold your horses - we've got months and months for those, although they do sell out so I obviously have some in the pipeline imminently) but we are still in jacket weather (until I go on holiday in a couple of weeks and after that, the coat seal will be broken and it will be GIVE ME ALL THE TEDDY BEAR VERSIONS!).

So with the lighter outerwear in mind, may I present the biker jacket with a difference.

Following on from the last blog - oh hello all things velvet.

Vero Moda Velvet Biker Jacket in Green £58

The one above is definitely leaning towards the oversized - the new shape of the season, as is this longline version from Biba at House of Fraser.

Biba Velvet Longline Biker Jacket in Berry £115

Longer line in wool, new in at M&S.

Wool Blend Biker Coat £79

Grey coat style at Mint Velvet £179

If you are looking for a snugger fit and I have to say - this is my shape of my choice.  They are the perfect foil to go over looser dresses, they make the the ideal silhouette over a fuller skirt or wide leg trousers or culottes.  I wear mine all year round.  Although yes, they are all leather or suede.

But there's pink velvet... I know, I know, this looks random.  And I'll be honest, a lot of things from Missguided aren't intended for anyone over the age of 12 months (teensy exaggeration).  Every now and again however, there is a gem that's too good to pass by.  And a pink fitted biker in velvet would be perfect for over long floral dresses whilst it's not full on winter.  How about with a midi leather skirt and tee?  Perfect to put away when the weather turns and bring out in the Spring.

Missguided Velvet Biker Jacket was £40 now £30  (plus you look like George from Rainbow.  What's not to love?!)

Faux Suede at La Redoute was £49 now £39

Suedette a plenty for great prices and in great colours at Warehouse.  This is a staple line they have every season because they're so great.

Suedette Biker Jacket from Warehouse in khaki £59

In the dark grey as above - this definitely has a steel blue grey edge to it, again £59.

And in the berry.

A suedette/velvet looking version though in a flattering grey shade from Only at Dorothy Perkins.

Only Grey Ava Jacket £42

Grey again but this time in wool.  This is surely the perfect option if you're looking for something with a more feminine feel to it.  Something that is smart enough to be ideal for work outfits, as well being delicious with jeans, tees or cashmere.

Bictoire wool biker jacket from La Redoute (amazing sale on by the way) was £115 now £69

And a similar wool mix version in a paler shade of grey from ASOS.

ASOS Formal Biker Jacket £65

Another version at Mint Velvet.  It's all about the texture - who needs leather?

Grey Textured Biker Jacket from Mint Velvet £149

A stripe version for those who like a statement edge to their biker.  I would wear this with wide leg trousers and a black polo neck.  Or whilst it's still mild - one of my oft worn tees and cropped wide legs.

Helene Berman Collarless Biker Jacket was £169 now £60

I am a dyed in the wool leather and suede fan but for those of you who aren't, hope you've managed to find something that works instead.

Here I am, the other day for an event at House of Fraser with Stylist Magazing.  All the navy.  LOVE this outfit.  All online now and I have to say how impressed I am with the quality for the price.  Very Cos/Jigsaw - definitely worth a look.

So I have the loveliest of weekends coming up.  Dinner party tonight with friends (at theirs - I am not cooking!) and tomorrow off to Chessington for the now 11yr old's birthday.  HOW do I have an 11 and a 13yr old?

Hopefully though I will have time to sneak in another blog - dare I say I'm looking for a navy bag?  And I WILL be looking at midi skirts and jumpers, as I have had so so many requests for them.

Have a lovely Friday. x

  1. Loving the idea of a biker in non-leather! The velvet ones are gorgeous.
Also loving the fact you're embracing navy!
Just ordered what must almost be akin to rocking horse poo, a pair of navy boots:

Inspired by some of the ones you've featured, which I was afraid weren't quite my style, but when I saw these, I felt they were just right for me. I did the usual, sign up for the newsletter, get 10% off, then unsubscribe, and repeat for next order!
As for navy bags, have you looked at Aurora-London, their studded one may be on my Christmas wish list!

  2. A navy bag post would be great. I've switched my laptop to the kin leather backpack (such good value / amazing leather) due to a big bag giving me a bad back, so looking for smaller bag for all the other bits ideally cross body and pref navy (especially as about to check out those check trousers as that outfit is amaze)

Cant believe 2 of your kids are 13 and 11 - when I started reading your blog your daughter was I think 8 or 9 and it was that long very cold winter you were standing outside in your cat boots rather a lot as the only reasonable footwear for the weather. How time flies!! xx

  6. Hi Kat. Love a biker. I have a good collection of leather and wool. I'm after a new black leather biker. Which of those you have would you recommend for softest of leather and fit? Thanks

    1. I will do a blog on them shortly... if you want super soft leather, I think the hush one fits the bill, but it's v slouchy. If you're looking for more structured and longer in the body then the Jigsaw one is amazing x
