So what do we wear our ankle boots with...?

That will be a midi skirt.

I think we've conquered it.  The midi skirt that is.  Well I have anyway.  I am completely in love with them.  Dare I say, I now think they're quite easy to wear?

Ok so this is, can I pre-empt, going into the Autumn.

Forget it in the Summer.  As what do you wear on the top?  The younger or just the more toned amongst us, are able to wear with a thin tee.   I, alas am not.  To quote a phrase I put on Instagram the other week, my body is less of a temple and more of a bouncy castle.

The midriff is not for showing nor highlighting with a thin, clingy fabric.  And god forbid I should tuck it in.  I need something sturdier than a verging on sheer, cotton tee to hide the tyre, not cling to it.  So coming up shortly, I have some pretty marvellous tops which serve just this purpose.

But in the meantime, I am exploring the clutch of amazing midi skirts that are on offer.

Perfect for showing off the end of those brown legs (or perfect for just having to fake tan the very bottom of your legs if you're not so fortunate as to have brown legs..).  Throw on with ankle boots or sneakers.

This is the skirt that I bought ages agao in M&S which has finally finally come online.  In the Vogue edit no less... great minds and all that.

Bonded Wrap Skirt from M&S £59

Another skirt I have winging my way which is perfect for every day - not sure I shall be tucking into mine as opposed to having something sitting on the top is this sturdy knitted (i say that as it's not a light knit if that makes sense?) skirt from the new season at hush.  Oh and I have yet another 10% off code which runs through to the end of August with free delivery and free returns.  AUGUST16.

Knitted Pleat Skirt from hush £120

Speaking of pleats - they are everywhere.  For once,  I am ahead of the curve with my khaki metallic Topshop one I got way back in February and have worn plenty.  Loads more wear to get out of that.  I could probably justify another....

ASOS Midi Skirt in Pleated Satin £35

Faux leather now in grey.  LOVE this and looks like a shorter midi (so not good for me but great for those not so tall).

Grey Faux Leather Midi Skirt £45

Another pleated skirt from Uniqlo £24.90

And in the wine...again £24.90

Now there are pleated metallic skirts a plenty as I mentioned this season.  My personal choice (seeing as it's tried and tested for me) would be Topshop, also because they're the only ones who do a tall version.  They also do petite and regular in their skirt section.

Tall Metallic Pleat Skirt £68

But I shall be hanging out for the velvet version which is coming soon.... please oh please let them do it in a tall version, or even better, the ankle grazer version.  This gold shade with leopard print... (and my boots arrive on Friday.  Massive whoop from me).

Velvet midi £55 from Topshop

I won't lie - the jury is out on all the stripes.  Although I would perhaps go a plain black jumper and black ankle boots. Could look pretty cool.

Monki Stripe Midi Skirt £30

Slightly off piste now with some midi alternatives.

First & I Ruffle Midi Skirt £25 Personally I'd team this with something plain.  But I love the idea of it.

Or in the black - slightly different fabric but I LOVE the idea of these.

Zacro Chiffon Skirt £50

Another layered one, this time from Free People at ASOS.   This isn't going to be for everyone, but I adore the new romantic look to this.  It has almost a Spandeau aroma... which can only be a good thing.   Love the styling with an oversized jumper (although I would look less boho and more hobo were I to attempt to sport this look), but I think with a fitted polo neck, blazer or nipped in military style jacket and heeled ankle boots, this would look amazing.

Free People free falling midi skirt in olive £128

Very similar now to one I got from M&S at the end of the Spring in the sale.  Mine is gold and green and will be coming out for Christmas, that's for sure.

ASOS Metallic Jacquard Prom Skirt £55

But I've saved my favourite for last.  Call.  Off.  The.  Dogs.  I do have a leather midi but well.. dare I say it's actually too big.  GAH.  The Whistles leather one which is fine but in reality is too large on the waist (totally my fault, I bought the wrong size and it stretched. A s leather does).  And this one has pockets... POCKETS!  Not to mention the box pleat in the front.  Oh hell with it, it's completely different to the completely plain one I own.

Tailored Fit Leather Midi Skirt from M&S £199

So have I managed to convince you that midis are here to stay for the Autumn?  Or do you need to see the jumpers to go with them?   I had planned on wearing one with aforementioned piece of knitwear but then the weather decided to go nuclear on us.  You had two hopes of getting me in a jumper yesterday or today and one of them was Bob.

This is what I went for yesterday in the end.  Absolutely adore this dress.  The easiest item of clothing I own to wear.

Red dress - H&M
Sandals - Forever21
Hat - Zara Men
Whiskey Medium Marcie Satchel - Chloe

Today, I have had the most amazing day in London with the 11yr old, getting her kitted out with bits for her new school (yes I was royally fleeced on the school bag... I have been assured that if you buy cheaper ones you simply end up buying more of them.  And this was actually by other parents, not 13 yr old rhetoric!).  But we then went to Tiger for all the pencil case, stationery bits and so saved about £30 there as opposed to traipsing off to Paperchase, so it's come good in the wash.  Most importantly, she's all set to go, (did I mention we got school shoes?  Highly recommend John Lewis on Oxford Street - not popular for school shoes, was empty), and I am absolutely and utterly exhausted.

What did I wear?  Well that was something that has been a revelation and I will be back with more tomorrow.

  1. Love the skirts. I get that they look good with ankle boots and am waiting to see your top choices, but what about jackets/coats to go over them? especially when it gets really cold. Am wondering how I can pass off a brand new Hush leather jacket to my husband as "this old thing? I've had it for aaaaages"... Jo

    1. AHA! Yes, totally agree, this is also a complete minefield. Fear not though - the leather jacket is a brilliant idea... as is the liitle leather bomber jacket I had on the blog the other day? But my top trump for the Autumn is the trench. I got a flowy trench from the sale in Zara this year and it's perfect for layering over a jumper and a skirt. With boots or shoes or sneakers. Any sort of long belted coat (although I don't plan on belting.. ) would work in my opinion. Hope that helps?

  2. I bought the green and gold M&S skirt in the sale too and am dying to wear it but not entirely sure what to put it with. Cropped , short sleeved crew neck fine knit, in black?? Maybe ? Loving the blog btw. Always makes me laugh x

    1. That sounds perfect! Although I don't think it necessarily needs to be cropped. So long as it's a fine knit and not ridiculously long, I've tried and it works perfectly just lying over the top of the waistband for a couple of inches down. The other option, if you have a waist then a thin silk shirt tucked in would work super well too. For me - not an option as I am tree trunk in my middle as opposed to hour glass. And thank you for your lovely comments xx

  3. I love the Free People skirt! I agree that for most of us the baggy jumper would be too much, though. The ankle boots with it look great too. Did I spy some more leopard print boots with the faux grey leather skirt?

    1. That's a gorgeous idea isn't it? Grey and leopard.... *looks at wardrobe and sees lack of grey skirt*. ARGH!

  4. I struggle with midi skirts going into the Autumn and I think it's because I don't like them with ankle boots. I think they go with trainers, sandals and shoes and long boots, but just not feeling it with ankle boots. Also do you wear tights with them when it is colder? This is why I stick to jeans!

    1. I agree about ankle boots and skirts, probably because I'm on the small side, I always feel as though my legs look even shorter! I'd go for longer boots or heels.
I do however love my ankle boots with jeans and trousers.

    2. I'll absolutely be wearing tights when it's colder. Although I personally don't have an aversion to the good old American tan ones... I would definitely say a knee boot is gorgeous too.

  5. Thanks for sharing all the lovely midi skirts. Free people midi is unusual and I love khaki in any shape and form. Leather midi skirt from M&S is gorgeous but a maxi length on me...and weighs a ton..but I don't care, I will be wearing it as soon as it arrives. Can we please have a post on velvet?

    1. The post on velvet is definitely coming up but I can't quite think about it when it's 30 Degrees again!!!!

  6. Love the midi skirts and can't wait to see the tops as its always a problem, especially on shorties like me and yay to velvet post as could lead to frumpdom if we go down the per una road......

    1. I bought the khaki velvet sweater from per una, that Kat posted a while back, it's paired back enough not to be instantly recognisable as per una. It's a bit like Boho, if you pick your pieces with care...
Now I'm just waiting for the weather to wear it ☺

    2. For me - the key with velvet is it has to be plain plain and then plainer than plain... But that's just me - I'd team with it a bit of leopard print to get that eclectic vibe. The velvet itself must be plain. Did I mention plain?!

  7. Blasted midi skirts. Can't do them at all being only 5ft 4, unless I wear really high heels which isn't practical at all when you have two dogs. And with ankle boots? No, no, no - they do absolutely nothing for the proportions and make me look even more stunted. I wish they would hurry up and go out of fashion.

    1. Oh noooo!! There are loads of other options around though - would be a dull dull world if we all wore the same thing. I bet you rock a mini skirt whereas it's something I give a v wide berth to!

    2. Very true and they do look lovely on you. Love a mini but only with black opaques - knees too knobbly to wear with bare legs. Which left very little to choose from in summer. Midi - no, maxi - no, mini not with bare legs, shorts - no, bare leg issue again. Oh I know what - how about jeans for a change? Perhaps I should invent something for us short people with knobbly knees!

  8. i agree, the midi skirt and wide crops are so hard for me to wear at 5ft3. i try so many on but cant find any which suit. Do you think a pleated midi would look ok with knee high boots. i have just ordered one in velvet from marks.

    1. I think a pleated midi would look lovely with knee high boots although I do think it might look better with a plain midi... Unless the boots were very close to the leg. Being petite, I might be concerned about there being too much going on in a small area - if that makes sense??!! Alternatively would you contemplate with trainers? Sock boots with a heel are another idea. I appreciate it's hard but there definitely are shorter people who do wear them and look amazing! It's all about proportion... and getting used to something outside of your comfort zone! (which definitely isn't just the domain of the petite...!!)

  9. Hi Kat , I started following your blog only four months ago.... Never knew about Hush before. Now got several items including etoile tee and loved the rayon pleat dresses ( got 2 ) in the recent hot weather. Your writing style always makes me grin so widely that it is therapy after a long days work....eg. the midriff tyre and yes the "fandango" -- I was laughing so loudly that my kids thought I was going bonkers.

  12. Yes, yes, yes to the skirts (especially the wine Uniqlo one which will slot nicely in my work wardrobe for winter) but really really need to see the tops to go with them.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Hmm I don't think they do if you wear something fitted on the top. And make sure - if you wider at the hips, that something nips in at the waist. Definitely heels would help to balance the silhouette. I am on an M&S mission today - an hour to spend perusing their site and I have enough for a whole blog!!! Leather and suede wrap skirt is gorgeous but my heart is set on those wide cropped trousers....

  14. Have bought the wool hush one which is gorgeous and also a khaki metallic pleated one from M & S. Love them but have no clue how to wear. Cannot wait for the tops. Bought some grey velvet ankle boots from Next. Not sure whether they are staying, have you seen them? Love the colour and the velvet but they are very high. Bring on the tops posts looking forward to it.
