I've come over all Hepburn

Of either the Audrey or Katharine variety.  (well hopefully...)

So I've blogged previously about my new found love of shirts which I have been sporting over the A/W and am very keen to continue to wear into the Spring/Summer.  But the issue was that the ones I've been wearing are rather on the oversized size.  I've found these have worked best over skinnies with my sweatshirts on and a large overcoat.  I have worn and loved.

But will these work in the Spring?  I was looking for something a little more fitted and so when Hawes & Curtis contacted me and asked if they could help in my shirt quest that they'd been following, it would have rude to say no.  I had looked at some of the Jermyn Street luxury shirt retailers before and included them on blogs but hadn't actually tried any on so this was a great opportunity to see if any would actually work.

To be honest, a) I had assumed that there wouldn't be a huge selection of women's shirts and b) I wasn't sure whether there would be anything that would suit me as I had (wrongly) assumed it was all a bit worky worky worky and a bit too classic ladies shirts for me.  Well, that goes to show, like I regularly say on here, it doesn't pay to judge a book by its cover.

As soon as I saw the 3/4 sleeve fitted hipster shirt I thought all things Hepburn.  Audrey, with skinnies or capri pants and ballet flats - perhaps a little blazer, crew neck jumper or cocoon coat over the top.  Katharine, with a more androgynous look - boyfriend or straight leg jeans turned up with loafers or brogues and of course, the ubiquitous blazer.  All very much looks which I'm planning on channelling this S/S.

French Navy was the obvious choice (even though I also have my eye on a black one) and I wore it yesterday.  I am so so pleased with the look, I can honestly say that I had more comments yesterday on my outfit than I've had in a long time.  It even got the approval of the 9yr old (which is praise indeed, her being the most highly critical of all my outfits) and one of my closest friends said she thought it looked "very Audrey Hepburn" *punches air* (and that was unprompted by the way.  Mission accomplished and things don't normally happen to me like that.  For example, not one but two people asked me the other night is my new Kenzo top was a "Zara number". Great.)

So here is the shirt that I chose:-

Ladies French Navy was £69 now £25  These are great as they're not 100% cotton, they have a percentage of elastane (3%) in them so have a fabulous stretch.  They are beautifully fitted and I would say relatively generous on the bust.  I love the oversized collar and the tiny vent in the sleeve.  Great length too, even on a spaghetti body like me.

And here it is on me yesterday.  I went for a power walk with friends first thing and so after showering and changing, the weather had really warmed up and it was actually too hot for a jacket (something I never thought I'd write in March).  Decided to put the Whistles Structured top over it and I love love love the look.  Can't wait to experiment more.

I also think that the white one would be an excellent option too.

I did mention black but they don't actually do this in a 3/4 length sleeve which is a crying shame.  However I think I'll also be going for a black longsleeved one.  Again, I'd definitely order one with stretch as I find them more comfortable to wear and easier to iron.

Whilst I preferred to go down the plain route, I have to say there were some fantastic print shirts that I was really quite surprised by, my favourite being this one.

An absolutely stunning shirt which would be just perfect for work, with jeans, over capri pants or shorts in the summer with the sleeves turned up.

There are lots of other great plain shirts, striped shirts and print shirts but the other design that I was surprised to see in there was what I call the DVF shirt.  The pussy bow satin shirt, at Hawkes & Curtis called The Lulu Shirt.  I am a huge fan of my silky satin black pussy bow shirt.  Mine is actually Zara and not DVF but it's very similar to a DVF one I was eyeing up at the time.  However I wasn't entirely sure how much wear I'd get out of it, so opted for the Zara version.  Well - 4 years on and I have worn this so so so many times.

The print ones definitely have a DVF vibe about them to me.  These would be great for either work or Spring (and thinking into Autumn) nights out with skinny jeans turned up and either ballet flats or pointed heeled courts.  Alternatively great with capri pants, tucked in or out.

My two favourite ones are:-

The final option that I did give serious consideration to, was a classic satin cream shirt.  I really though that this could work all year round and for so many different occasions.   I love the idea of smart indigo straight leg jeans turned up with sneakers and a fitted blazer (shirt untucked), tucked into a tan leather pencil skirt with sky scraper heels for a smart dinner out.  The perfect shirt to take you from the office into the evening.  I quite like the idea also of teaming with combat trousers and a classic crewneck jumper over it.  All very Jenna.

So there we have my tribute to La Hepburns and than you to Hawkes & Curtis for the lovely shirt which I am planning on wearing a fair bit (also looks amazing under the lime green Whistles Sculptured top and I'm now thinking I may be in the market for a yellow crew neck jumper.... how fab with the green Zara coat and a pair of boyfriend jeans?

Here I am with the shirt on today for a more dressed down look.  Up at the crack of dawn to take the boys to football, 9yr old to drama, back to pick boys up from footie and then out for brunch.

I'll be back tomorrow with something I'm cryptically calling Rugby Shoes.  Can we work out what this might be about?

  6. I have to go out to work, so usually wear shirts. Although you've styled them very casually I can see how I could match them with my smart trousers and skirts. Some nice ideas here, I like the French navy.

    1. They would definitely work perfectly with smart outfits, for sure. It's so lovely to be able to have things in your wardrobe that you can wear every day as opposed to just work. The French Navy is gorgeous - goes really beautifully with black as well. xx

    1. Thank you. Still love the trousers myself, I like the change they make from just a normal straight leg or boyfriend jean. My fave way of wearing though I found and is up on the latest blog post.

  9. Well I'm lucky enough to be a real Hepburn but sadly I can't wear collars so this look isn't for me. Such a shame as I love it with the structured top, great look x
