If you're not quite ready for a coat...

Just in case I scared you the other day with the coat blog, I've decided there is an interim step you can make.

The tried and tested cardigan.  When it comes to cardigans I like mine oversized.  Big and baggy, they add both warmth and interest to an outfit.  And with all the different knits, it's also easy to add texture.  The ultimate in functionality.  Whilst making a pretty cool addition to your outfit.  It makes transitional dressing a no brainer.  And you can carry on wearing into the Winter by layering more.  Ok perhaps stop the layering when you start looking Michelin-esque but I love a shirt, jumper and then a cardigan.  And scarves.  The bigger the better.

I also go long.  Midi yes but super long is my cardigan poison of choice.

Speaking of super long and texture...

Faux-fur pockets cardigan from Mango £49.99  Absolutely love this and if I didn't not need a dark grey one I would get this in a heartbeat.  Although when did *need* have anything to do with anything.

A thick texture knit at Mango again in what they call chocolate £49.99

Another chunky knit again at Mango, this time in navy £35.99

Or in the dark heather grey.

Midi now and I have to say I'm all about the fluff.  The fluffier the better.

Fluffy longline cardigan from Mint Velvet £99

Fluffy midi cardigan from La Redoute £49 in navy with 25% off using code 25DEL

Long Sleeve Cardigan from M&S £69 But don't forget the discount with the code SEPT16A21 - 20% off till Monday.

I have tried this on and I think it looks much better sized up but that's just the look I prefer.

Untitled

Mohair again at By Malene Birger.  I made the mistake of "just having a look".  Foolish.  Really foolish.  Cardigan porn.

Jovillan cardigan from By Malene Birger £500 (could you justify as a coat?  Yes is the answer by the way)  It also does come with a belt.

Or the Rinorra in exotic green (I think the exotic might refer to the price...) £275

But you can also snag a BMB bargain at The Outnet.

Bellisa knitted cardigan in beige was £250 now £110

And in the stone (looks like grey to me... ) again £110 down from £250

But personally, none of these are fluffy enough for me.  I want to look like the Ready Brek man.  Think fluff you can see from space.  I know I've seen one somewhere.  Do you think I can remember where?  Can I heck as like.

So this one is the best I can do from Warehouse.

Blouson sleeve mohair cardigan from Warehouse £59 in peach

Then we have the hooded options.

Hooded at Topshop - Block Cardi £49

More plain hooded versions at Gap.

Long hooded cardigan in charcoal heather £54.95

In blue uniform again £54.95

And in the heather grey £54.95

And finishing with a couple of off piste numbers. From Mint Velvet - military style.

Mint Velvet Military Longline Cardigan £109

Another drapey number from Rick Owens.  Admittedly I would happily find a home for this.  Very very happily.  Were it slightly thicker wool.  I fear that I know Rick Owens knitwear and they're always very light.  I want a bit more chunk for my money.

Rick Owens Draped Wool Cardigan £395

But finishing with my favourite.  I absolutely adore this.  A cardigan that just says "Autumn, you're up".  Bring out the navy, the greys, the blacks.  Throw this on.  You're done.

Nordic Fair Isle Longline Cardigan from Great Plains £85

I'm not going to lie.  At this point I am somewhat cardiganed out.  I'm not sure any of these are exactly what I'm looking for and - rather unlike me - I've got to the end of the research thinking that all the ones above are fabulous but not sure they're entirely what I'm looking for.  Except obviously the £500 By Malene Birger one which I totally totally heart.  And can't remotely justify, seeing as the husband has just leant over my shoulder and said "nice dressing gown".  Now my turn to eye roll...  (I also may have just remembered I have a khaki Acne mohair cardigan from last year.  Oh my lord THE shame.  That's me sorted actually.  I didn't wear that nearly enough last year so it will be perfect for this year.  Result).

Thoughts on cardigans kids?

Here I am in one from hmm last year or the year before (I think it may be the year before actually - doesn't time fly when you're having fun) from Zara.   Oh and yes, I have had FIVE inches cut off my hair!  It obviously looked a lot better yesterday having a) not slept on it and b) not spend an hour in a gale at football/dog walking this morning.

Navy jumper - Uniqlo
Phoebe jeans - MiH
Cardigan - Zara
Red Soho Disco Bag - Gucci
White cracked leather Stans - adidas

And a quick pic of an outfit I had on on Thursday night for drinks out with friends.

Black Jumpsuit - Kin by John Lewis
Glove Sandals - Balenciaga
Thurlaston Clutch - Village England

So I'm off to finish a shoe article for tomorrow which is rather exciting.  And get ready for a lovely family evening in, having had a rather hectic day yesterday in London which I will report back on on Monday.  Inspiration-tastic mind you.  Tomorrow is the 11yr old's birthday - after rugby (weeps).  I will have almost a teenager.  EEK.

  1. Lovely lovely cardigans - perfect to hygge in! Your hair was drastic! - looks lovely! I have to keep my finger off the M and S button as I know I have a whole pile of cashmere that I got at a clothes swish vacuum packed away waiting for colder weather. This is a dangerous time of year for me as I look at things and forget what I've already got secreted away.........

    1. Err me and the Acne cardigan spring to mind! That was one of my major investments last year. Can't wait to wear it again - almost hoping it's going to be cold tomorrow!

  2. Love the haircut. Have cardigan envy every time you post the Zara one! Also had thought 'dressing gown' way before you mentioned the husband saying it (sorry!). Must step away though as a clear out/switch around from summer to Autumn clothes this week revealed an embarrassing amount of long cardigans so I don't need any, I really don't..(that is a good thing right *steps away from the Mint Velvet website*).

    1. But omg have you seen all the new gems online at MV? Gone is the lilac and the pink and the lacey trims... It's grown up chic! I am going to have to do a whole blog on them (you might want to avoid that one!)

  3. Totally agree on the mint velvet. The catalogue came through the door and suddenly there are lots of things I need. And I never liked it as a brand before. Kind of like a grown up All Saints vibe this season, so still can pretend to be rock and roll (without being mutton) even on the school run.

  4. Great article! Flying to Scotland this week and desperately seeking "Coatigan" or cardigan with attitude. This has been a huge help. Great big Village England fan here so lovely to see Thurlaston Clutch there.

  5. Oversized grey cardigan is my holy grail and i was on a serious mission last week, having bought but then returned no less than three grey ones! Two from By Maline Birger - the Dittelis one from Net-a-porter, the Belles one from the Outnet and another similar one from COS. Then I found the perfect one in my own closet - from COS last year - but in black! Hoping now they might release a grey version this year.

In the meantime, I've decided to use the grey cardie budget on accessories instead- I finally ordered some BellaJane silver bracelets with your discount (thanks!)!! xx

    1. I'm sure they had more in Cos but I couldn't see them online. Going in this week so I'll have another look. And you will adore the Bella Jane bracelets. They are amazing!

  6. Love long cardigans, they're great at this time of year. My favorite has to be from Sibin Linnebjerg. I have both the standard length Mary cardigan, and the Short length Mary. They've got a good weight, great texture and they wash really well.

Always looking for an addition to the collection, love the Great Plains one (a new brand for me, have also spotted a pair of trousers that are very tempting!) Your "new" hair is great, as is the combination of khaki knitwear and red bag!

  7. Recently discovered your blog and love it! Thanks!
Love the cardigan look, and I may 'need' the first Mango one pictured soon!
I wanted to ask you, as I love the whole look in the first picture, are we expected to have a bare bit of leg showing even in winter? I've been experimenting and the 'gap' is definitely an important part of the look (dark socks, tights or popsocks(aargh) just don't look right. I am now thinking nude popsocks, which I have never worn in my life, but I just can't think of anything else. I could try leaving the space bare but in winter it would be cold, not to mention the fact that my pale legs over winter aren't a great sight (and I've also realised from my experimenting that more bare leg shows if you're sitting). If you have any ideas or can do a page on this I'd be so grateful x

    1. No very good point. Pop socks are indeed your friend... Or bare tights with a skirt (or I even wore under culottes last year!)

      And thank you xx

  8. Oh lord, I love a long cardi. Currently wearing a Celtic & Co grey merino one which I have had for several years, I also have a thicker mohair one in slate blue. Love your Acne one, and the Malene Birger one and the Great Plains one...

  9. I love a long cardigan. I hope it stays mild enough to dodge wearing a coat this Autumn so I can wear my grey M&S Autograph one from last year as much as possible. I love the Great Plains one and the Topshop one with the hood is adorable.

I love your hair cut! The colour looks great too (not sure if the colour is new or just looks different in the photos) I'm trying to grow mine from a bob to a "lob" and yours looks like the perfect length.

    1. I never have my colour done with my haircut as I always can eek out a couple of extra weeks!! Although the greys are taking over..... I am GUTTED I didn't get the M&S one from last year. Hanging out to see what else M&S bring out this year.... I ADORE their current Autograph stuff.

    2. I know what you mean about the greys, I seem to be tweaking the colours every time I get my hair coloured. I remember my mum doing solid diy colour for years, and the transition was hard for her, and made up my mind I was going to try and go grey naturally, but brightening it up with a bit of hairdresser magic! I was sad to give up my copper low lights though, apparently they would be more orange than copper with there being more and more grey, so the warm notes are gradually cooling down.

  10. I love long cardigans and was really interested to see all the examples on your blog. Sad to see the back of Summer but cheering myself up with the thought of layering up in new knitwear. I really liked the hooded ones but not sure if, at the age of 51, it's something I could carry off?! Your views would be appreciated. I am 5'10" so love the longer lengths. Love reading through your blog posts x

  12. I got a beautiful charcoal grey pure cashmere cardigan in tk maxx last week. It sits below the knee on me and I am tall. It's from a brand called Charli London (does seem a genuine one, not one of TK's made up brands) and it hangs really nicely, a bargain for cashmere at £69. I've had some fab bargains in tk maxx recently! So would recommend a rummage in there. Thanks to Danish Pastry highlighting a brand called Samsoe and Samsoe I've also got a fab grey merino jumper dress in TK's too, just perfect and what I've been looking for, £29 and v lovely quality.

    1. OMG I might head down this afternoon! I LOVE Samsoe and Samsoe and yes Charli are definitely a brand. They mostly do jersey basics - great quality tees and every essentials. Fab news. x

  13. Charli London are indeed a real brand. They do lots of relaxed, neutral pieces. I have a fine knit linen jumper from them. I'm tempted to have a visit to tkmaxx, now.

  14. Thanks Tanya, I had a look at their website, seems like they do good luxe basics. They did have quite a few different things in there from them X also got a lovely jaeger roll neck a zadig scarf and a fantastic wellensteyn waterproof winter coat for a snip (perfect for winter dogwalking!). I can go for a few months without finding anything decent in there but it's been a treasure trove recently.
