If it ain't broke...

... buy the same thing you already have in another colour for Autumn?  A new saying.  That I've just made up.

But I've come to the conclusion that it might a moment of genius from me.  Jeans.  Oh lord, how much do we all hate shopping for jeans?  Seriously, I honestly think it doesn't matter what your shape, most of us would agree that, the 10th circle of hell is a denim shopping trip.  Too short, too long, not the right denim wash, too tight on the thighs, too loose on the thighs, too saggy at the bum, too camel toe inducing, too low rise, too high rise.  Ugh.

So when you find a pair that works for you.... why wouldn't you just buy the same pair in a different wash for a different season?  How much sense does that make?  When it's written down like that, it just seems totally obvious no?

Except that unfortunately the ones that I love are £220.  *all the sad faces*.  And... I've tried them on and I think they're a slightly different fit from the ones I have.  Even though they're supposedly the same size.

The MiH Phoebes that I have lived in all Summer.  Totally lived in them.  They've done me during the day, they've been perfect out at night.  The fact that I only paid £60 makes it all the more satisfying.  But they're a very pale wash and for the Autumn/Winter, a darker wash would be perfect.  What?  Like these ones?  That will be yes.  For not £60.

MiH Phoebe Jeans £220

Now here they are on me and they don't look as loose as my originals.  I definitely think they're slightly smaller cut.  As my old ones are a 26 and are baggy, whereas this is the 27 and *just fit*.  However I think they look better on the looser side so I should probably size up to a 28.  And the model above is wearing a 26 and I can guarantee she does not have three kids later hips.  Or a "really should do more exercise but wine is always more appealing" bouncy castle of a stomach.

I definitely need to size up to the 28 to give them that proper slouch.  That will work so well with the more fitted sorts of tops I'm going to be collecting to go with all my midi and maxi skirts.

So as much as I'd love to just press buy on the Phoebes in the original dark blue and justify their cost per wear till I'm blue in the face (although I think it would be an easy task), I thought it would be foolish not to take a minute and see if there were any other versions I should try.

The crucial thing about the Phoebes is that whilst they're a boyfriend jean, they're in fact a straight leg, unlike most boyf denim which tend to be mostly on the slightly more tapered side.

First up - ASOS, as I have definitely had success with denim from there in the past.   But not a lot on the straight leg boyfriend jean front, especially if we're looking at the straighter leg versions.

These look great but for me, they're definitely not loose enough for what I'm looking for.  (great looking jeans though!)

ASOS Kimmi Shrunken Jeans in Rio Wash with Deep Turn Ups £32

Using my imagination here and wondering if you could turn the hem instead of rolling it... although for me, they're probably not dark enough and are too similar to my old pair.  But these could work..

Bethnals Smith Relaxed Boyfriend Jeans with rolled hem were £75 now £52

Now these are completely the wrong colour - couldn't be less what I'm looking for, but they are an amazing amazing cut.  Maybe for next Summer?

Weekday Mid Rise Loose Unisex Jeans were £45 now £22

Maybe a contender?  (not quite the wash I'm looking for personally.  I am officially the Goldilocks of denim).

Pepe Jeans Donna Turn Up Loose Fit Jeans were £85 now £34

Wide Leg Crop at Warehouse AND with 20% off all their denim.  Was £49 now £39.20

I do know however that these aren't going to be long enough for me, but a great option for those who aren't daddy long legs.

And these are exactly what I want.  But not in my size.  Gah.   Seriously EXACTLY what I'm looking for and at half price.

MiH Phoebe Slim Jeans were £220 now £120

So I'm hawking ASOS to see if these come back in stock (I fear I have two hopes of this happening and one of them's Bob).  In the meantime - what are you favourite style of jeans?  I do love a skinny but I have to say, the boyfriend jean and in particular the Phoebes, have definitely won me over and I could happily wear on most occasions.  But if you have another pair of boyfriend jeans to recommend, I'm all ears.

Finishing with some pics from yesterday and today.  The daughter's 12th birthday.  Party with friends in the afternoon and a rather late finish... exhausted and then some today.

  1. I've just bought a fab pair from Next, in the dregs of the sale online too. I can't remember if they are boyfriend or girlfriend fit but a lovely darker shade of blue with some distressing. They're a loose straight fit with a food up hem although not quite as far as your Pheobes. I love them and at £12, already a steal at cost per wear! x

  2. Hi Kat - I just got these from gap the wash is darker IRL and the fit is deffo straight legged and look better w fold up turn up as opposed to rolled, worth taking a look at and Gap usually has one promo or another going most of the time ! http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=227249002&cvosrc=cse.google.PLA_Brand&cvo_campaign=210199298&cvo_adgroup=10149031538&cvo_crid=57328249298&Matchtype=&campaigntype=PLA&tid=gppl000001&kwid=1&ap=7&sem=true&creative=57328249298&adpos=1o2&gclid=CjwKEAjwmf6-BRDi9fSN7Ijt1wUSJAASawcjlcwOLx08JiFq0SSIeQL32vORm9aVtz-VerAxy4cruhoC8pDw_wcB

    1. AHA now yes, I need to look at these. Do they stretch ridiculously like Gap jeans used to do...?? I have one pair from there which I LOVE (and bought in the sale so owe me absolutely nothing - I got them four years ago I think, the Real STraight which they don't make any more in that style). These definitely look like an option. I should do another blog with dressing room pics shouldn't I?!

    2. I would say they stretch a little but they don't bag hugely over the course of a day like some do, I actually sized down to 26s from my usual 27 to counter that and they fit very comfortably on me I find - give 'em a looksee anyway Gap denim is just as good as more expensive lines these days it's the backbone of the store so they've invested a lot in recent seasons to lure back the customers

    3. This is such great news thank you! And I've seen online that you can have your hems cut to measure.. hmm I think I need to explore this next week in more detail. Thank you so much for getting back to me xxxx

  3. I got these Gap 1969 Best Girlfriend jeans too! Best jeans I've bought in years...now have them in four colours! They had 40% off in store last week and 30% off online!

  4. My boyfriend jeans are from Banana Republic - I buy them a size too big so that they're really slouchy, and I've got faded blue and indigo versions (weirdly I needed a size bigger in the lighter ones to get the same look). The denim is really soft, and I wore one or other pair most of this summer. Other than boyfriends, my favorite styles are probably straight cropped (got some fab Gap authentic ones) and flared - I get the AG Jeans Angelina style, which is petite, as I have short legs (but am 5"6 overall!). I'm in the US where they're a whopping $220 full price, but all mine are discounted from stores like Nordstrom Rack (worth a look if you're near one any time). Haven't ever paid more than $80! Old Navy also do some great flared jeans, much cheaper too.

  5. I wouldn't panic too much Kat. The darker the wash, the less giving the fabric so you'll always have to size up. The more dye on the fibres means they are less giving. All hail the 28"

  6. The Pheobes do look good on you, as did the Bella Freud sweater, question is did you weaken and buy the sweater?
I must admit, the jeans I live in are Esprit, they fit me well, and if I can get hold of that ankle grazers then the length is perfect for my stunted legs, otherwise I have to get them taken up! For years I couldn't find jeans I loved, but now I'm almost living in them.

  7. Oh the M&S skirt is out of this world gorgeous. BUT it is a LOT OF fabric. I absolutely absolutely adore it - I find it much longer on me than the Whistles skirt which is slightly too short if I'm honest. I should probably sell it. I also love the hush black pleated skirt - would recommend sizing down xxx

  9. Love the "if it aint broken" philosophy. After a hard think I realized that denim and tee shirts are what I buy "doubles" of. I believe it saves me time having located the perfect item and wearing the hell out of it for a couple of years. The search is what drains me so I enjoy buying doubles of items that I wear a lot. Love your blog. You are hilarious. Love your dressing room pics!

  10. M and S relaxed slim! £25! I tried them by accident as I wanted kinda relaxed skinny but they are definitely more like straight leg boyfriend/ girlfriend. And with the turn up too. I would say normal size would give the right look. Good luck! And if you see any skinny but not medical examination jeans suitable for those of us with decent but 50 year old pins (you know, just like my old grey ones but without holes), let me know!
