The Start of The Essentials

We've got to the end of January. And I haven't done a blog post...why is that? Partly because I've been working on another project, home schooling and generally just trying to keep my head above water with work, kids, dogs and everyone being at home together.

And because this year - more so perhaps than any other year - I"m not sure there's been as large an appetite as usual for embracing all things new season. Even in the sales - normally I would be perusing them with a vengeance but this year, the feelings of anticipation at what's to come and what we can invest in was definitely more muted.

But...from feedback I've received, whilst some definitely aren't in the mood for all things new, others want something to think about and want to treat themselves to alleviate the monotony and boredom. It IS going to be different horses for courses, so I've maintained radio silence for January out of respect for those who don't want to shop but for those who do... I'm back!

I think the main thing we need to focus on is things that we're not buying just for the here and now. We need to think forward as it's NOT going to be forever.

So if we do feel the need to supplement the wardrobe we currently have, we only buy things that we will be able to wear on the other side.

And first up - the humble jogger. So I'm not looking at your typical cotton jogger here. They're 10 a penny and can be found everywhere. I'm talking something that has a little more sartorial elegance and can be worn "out" and not just for active stuff. Obviously we're only allowed to go for a walk now but these CAN be worn later on with chunky boots - even heeled boots, a fine knit, a blazer or a trench or other smart coat and there won't be a whiff of exercise emanating anywhere from you.

First up - these are all under £40 - many very much under that and I will be doing another blog post later in the week of ones that are slightly more expensive but do offer a bit more variety.

For starters though - I've gone knitted and faux leather. Both of which I have, both of which I highly highly recommend. And you DON'T have to spend a fortunate At All!

New Look knitted jogger co-ord in oatmeal £22.99

Cream utility style at H&M.

Lyocell Utility Joggers from H&M £24.99

Bargain now from ASOS.

Which they also do in a very pale grey shade.

ASOS DESIGN knitted jogger in grey was £28 now £16.80

Pale Grey from Style Cheat - waffle knit joggers £20

Which they also do in a pink...which can at first glance appear slightly saccharine but actually if you team with pale grey, charcoals, off whites and even black, it can suddenly be a lot more wearable.

Style Cheat waffle knit joggers £20

Alternative colour option now - mauve. Ideal if you're looking to change up your grey outfits - an injection of mauve will work perfectly.

Fine knit joggers in dark mauve from H&M £17.99 (matching hoodie also available)

A darker camel at Mango - again with a matching hoodie and a BARGAIN price tag.

Knit jogger style trousers from Mango £19.99

Two Tone in the sale at Cos.

Colourblock wool joggers were £79 now £39.50

In Olive... ASOS 4505 Yoga knitted joggers £25

Darker Charcoal again at Mango £19.99 - absolutely love this look - matching hoodie as well, will be covering hoodies another day...

Tall in dark grey from Vero Moda £34

Leather Look Joggers from New Look were £22.99 now £17.20

Which they also do in a Tall were £22.99 now £18.35

Or... if you would prefer an uncuffed pair, it's definitely worth looking at these from ASOS. Yes the picture is highly dodgy for anyone over the age of 24 but try and use your imagination as these are really really useful. I've had a pair from ASOS for about 5yrs now and wear them regularly.

ASOS DESIGN leather look joggers £25

So in typical style it appears I'm no longer able to upload photos from my computer which is WEIRD but not remotely surprising considering my total and utter lack of any technical prowess. You can see lots of examples of me in joggers and how I style them over on Instagram- hopefully giving you some more ideas and inspiration of outfits you can create from things you already own. I will also be doing a styling session over on Instagam about different looks you can create from one set of joggers and a hoodie.

And I will hopefully be able to remedy the uploading issue and BE BACK with pics!

Lots more to come to help us be vaguely sartorially acceptable throughout this lockdown.

Joggers that aren't for jogging

Especially when they have a go faster stripe. So I was going to write this as a general joggers blog but it appears that I have been indoctrinated by a side stripe. I love these for a less casual look. Don't get me wrong, I love these for a complete slob day with a hoodie and a pair of trainers - ideal for the school run or for those days when you really want a glorified version of your jamas.

But when you throw in the juxtaposition of a cashmere roll neck and a trench coat - even with trainers, they have a certain edge to them that I am currently doing all the crushing over.

A coloured pair are ideal for bringing all your old faithful black favourites up to date. I have a red pair which I LOVE. And I also own a black pair which are ideal for breathing fresh life into your old monochrome outfits. Will be wearing with chunky boots in the Winter. Right now, I wear mine with trainers and Birkenstocks. You can also do a heel addition although right now I can't even think of wearing heels - it's all about the flats.

These are the ones that I have from adidas at La Redoute. Size up as they're tiny.

Slim fit joggers from adidas at La Redoute £42

More sizes available from the adidas site - £42.95

And this is where I got my red ones from - adidas track pants £42.95 ALTHOUGH apparently these are "power pink"...

adidas Training three stripe joggers in black £43

Side striped again at Nike.

Nike joggers in black £39.95

A wider leg at New Balance.

New Balance metallic logo joggers £40

Wider leg again in the sale at ASOS from Tommy Hilfiger.

Tommy Hilfiger side stripe wide leg joggers in navy were £115 now £85

Wide leg trousers at adidas.

adidas Primeblue wide leg joggers £42.95

And then how about some colour. I shouldn't love these ones as much a I do. I ADORE them. I think with a long trench and a cashmere jumper - perfection in an Autumnal outfit.

Astoria Snap Pants in Orange £60

Or the green... love. Love love love. White shirt, jumper and oversized coat.

Astoria Snap Pants from Weekday in green £60

And a cuffed pair at Whistles but I think the satin stripe negates the more casual edge that the cuff gives.

Black Satin Side Stripe Joggers at Whistles were £139 now £79

And an unusual pair from DKNY in pale pink at ASOS. Definitely for when you want your trousers to do the talking. I would advise keeping the rest of your outfit very plain and pared back.

DKNY knit joggers was £48 now £34

And here I am last week in two pairs of mine. Both adidas - one black and one red.

Expect to see a lot more of these although obviously not this week as - oh HELLO HEATWAVE!! Won't stop me charging forward with all the Autumnal goodies though... bring on that cashmere, those knits, all of the leather, boots and trenches. BRING IT ON!

It's defnitely become the norm

It was only a couple of years ago when eyebrows would have reached space at the thought of wearing leather for during the day - as trousers. Dare I even say, as joggers?

But roll forward a couple of years and they're everywhere. It has become the norm to wear leather trews to work, to the pub, to the supermarket - everywhere.

And it's not just joggers - obviously we can talk about leather leggings but not today. We're talking bottoms of the looser variety. So peg legged, wide leg crops and the good old jogger.

What do you team them with? Well pretty much any top to suit the occasion. There is no reason why these shouldn't be your staple A/W bottoms for every eventuality. Christmas parties with a sequin top, Christmas Day with your fave cashmere jumper. I love to wear mine with a tee and blazer (I do tend to avoid a biker - you would probably rather swerve the Hell's Angel, head to toe in leather, look).

What about with a blouse for full on chic for the office or for a night out? Any from the blog yesterday would be superb. I'm also loving them with any knit and a longline cardigan. Speaking of which, I am on the cardie hunt so bear with me for a couple of days. And blouses that are flattering for everyone.

Budget wise, there is a pair to suit all pockets. First up - investment time. *bites fist*.

Me+Em Slim Crop Leather Trousers £750 Love this entire look and would happily wear on repeat.

Similar but at a much more reasonable price point at & Other Stories

Leather Trousers £225

Wide leg crops at LKBennett

Lula Forest Cropped Leather Trousers £425

But they don't have to be leather - trust me. Faux leather is so so good these days, it's very difficult to see the difference.

ASOS Leather Look Tapered Trousers with Elasticated Back £35

They also do these in a petite...again £35

And a tall version as well.

If you're looking for a higher waist, then I've found some on Shopbop.

Suncoo Jil Faux Leather Joggers from Suncoo £137.30 (or whatever $180 - I didn't work that conversion out, the website does it for you).

Although I have found similar at Vero Moda for a fraction of the cost.

Vero Moda Leather Look Trousers £44

Plus they also do them in a Tall, also £44 (which clearly is only vaguely relevant if you're an Avatar, if not - scroll on by).

Straight legs but not in a black.

Straight seam trousers from Mango in navy (although I would say teal...like I said yesterday - I think I might be in love with this colour. Discuss?!) £29.99

Then there are the wide leg cropped versions. Which I have on today. Mine are from Topshop last year I think - maybe earlier this year but certainly from A/W16. I cannot vouch for the quality of these, seeing as I'm 44 so the sum total of everything I've bought from Pretty Little Thing is zero. However for £28 I'd be tempted to give them a go. It suggests on the description that you might like to team them with a leather bralet (and there in lies one of the reasons I perhaps have not been a frequent peruser of the site? Just a thought). Whatever floats your boat - throwing it out there, that I prefer to team mine with a (midriff/muffin) covering tee and blazer or thin cashmere knit. The choice is yours.

Black Faux Leather Cropped Trousers from Pretty Little Thing £28

Peg Leg versions again from Pretty Little Thing £25 You may, or may not, be pleased to hear the belt doesn't come with these. I have to say, belt and cropped tee aside (it's like looking at a house that has avocado bathrooms - see beyond the decor), these look blooming marvellous. I have a pair of these from Zara which I LOVE but are too big (although I have been eating well recently so I'll stop talking now).

And finally from Topshop where my cropped faux leather ones are from. Off white. I've zoomed in on this pic a million (ok maybe about three) times to see if the trousers have pockets or she's got her hand in the coat pocket. Thoughts?

Faux Leather Cropped Trousers from Topshop £38

Now I have always worn faux leather but this year, I do have a full leather pair as I bought them from a friend who had them as a sample and the company decided not to produce them for their main collection. So I literally have a one off.

Leather joggers - Rue de Femme
Blondie tee - Hollister
Blazer - Mos Mosh Jeans
Flutter trainers - Air & Grace
Shark scarf - Rockins
Red Soho Disco Bag - Gucci

In faux leather today with my old classics from Topshop - the ones I think are the same as the off white ones above. Alas, they don't do them in black anymore (but I would be tempted to try the Pretty Little Thing ones).

Wide leg faux leather crops - Topshop
ROAR sequin tee - Quattro Rish
Red ankle boots - Topshop
Blazer - Zara
Tools bag - Balenciaga

I will definitely be back tomorrow - couple of ideas up my sleeve but all of which are perfect for this time of year. In the meantime, all keep safe in the storm.

There is nothing more relaxing...

...than a pair of joggers.

We come on holiday a couple of times a year to Suffolk and these are the one thing that I pack, regardless of what the forecast will be.

I say that but you can pretty much guarantee that on the English Coast, at any time of the year, it will rain at some point.

And even if it doesn't, sat on the beach watching the children swim (there is NO way I am getting in - it's basically the North frigging Sea!!), it's not exactly bikini weather, the wind is pretty much always on the slightly (very) ferocious side.

They double up into the evening with a vest and sweatshirt for movie nights (or bingo nights as they are here this Summer..) on the sofa with the children.

Even dinner out here is an incredibly relaxed affair - I don't think I've ever seen anyone wear a pair of heels here in 12 years.

It's so lovely to be able to switch off and essentially "glam" around in your jamas.

That's not to say they can't look presentable as well though - I am all the slobbing out as the weather isn't the best and so am wearing mine with a huge jumper, trainers and parka (I did swap for a leather jacket for the cinema). But when it's due to improve - a pair of sandals, a tee and a blazer suddenly make them eminently more stylish.

These for me are definitely something it's worth thinking about with regards to cost per wear. I had a pair from Me+Em last year and loved them. They will be well worn this year as well. I got the more reasonable versions below but the more expensive versions, I would happily wear to a meeting.

Triple Stripe Drawstring Track Pant from Me+Em £149

The other pair to definitely consider from Me+Em which are an amazing price are the double stripe joggers. I got the navy and white stripe from last season and can vouch for their quality and the all important comfort factor.

Me+Em Easy Fit Double Stripe Joggers in Black and Khaki £59

Or navy and cream... again £59

Somewhere I haven't looked for ages but keep seeing in magazines (my holiday crack) are things from Gap.

And these look like they're definitely worth checking out. It also seems that every time I go onto their site, there's a code off. Pops up at the top of the page or just subscribe to their newsletter and they send you a code.

Tencel Utility Joggers in Black Moss (which in layman's terms is....? A grey shade of green?? I would think randomly useful though). £49.50 And they come in petite and tall as well. I should definitely, definitely be looking more at Gap.

In True Black again £49.95

Or the Medium Grey ("grey" to you and me).

Fleece at Gap, except these are French Terry Fleece Joggers which sound infinitely more stylish. £29.95 in true black.

French Terry Fleece Joggers in the washed black again £29.95

And the light heather grey - do remember, these are just any fleece joggers... these are French Terry fleece joggers...

Another grey at hush but this time with the addition of a zip at the ankle.

Amie Joggers from hush £49.50

Or in a shade which I think is perfect for all year round and just that little bit different - olive.

Olive Amie Joggers from hush £49.50

Or classic charcoal - ideal for those who don't want black black, again £49.50 - the Amie Jogger.

If you don't want cuffed bottoms then M&S is a great entry level to try them out. These have their place but for me - and if you're looking for true jogger joggers (although god forbid I should actually break into a jog in them..), they've got to be cuffed. And you can file that with "things I wouldn't have said a couple of years ago"....

Jersey Tapered Joggers from M&S in black £19.50

Or at Me+Em, slightly more but you would get more than a little bit of wear out of these.

Me+Em Easy Cargo Jogger in dark khaki £99

Similar shape but a more relaxed jersey fabric in a difficult to get hold of navy.

Herringbone Jersey Track Pants in Navy from Jigsaw £80

But I will say my favourite style is definitely the harem style. Say what you will about them - Hammer time blahblah - I love them. They are so comfy, they are the perfect holiday trousers. They even work with heels. Trust me.

ASOS Harem Pants in Jersey £16

Which they also do in a Tall, again £16.

However the ones that I live in and have done for years are the hush long harems. I also wear the cropped ones but they're out of stock so let's not mention them. You have to be early in the Spring to get hold of them as they do sell out.

The full length ones though are a year round staple and I genuinely wear mine every week. In fact - every day. A pair of these goes on as soon as we're home and I'm not leaving the house anymore. They wash and tumble like a dream (it does say you're not supposed to tumble dry them but I do with no adverse effects at all).

Long Harem Trousers in Black £55

In the charcoal again £55

And the ones I have, the khaki.

Yesterday, here I was in mine.

Harems - hush
Love Jumper - hush (coming next week)
Onyx jacket in grey - hush
Copeland Sneakers - Air & Grace
Tools Satchel - Balenciaga

The weather looks like it's clearing up slightly today (she says optimistically...). We have another day of tennis, I hang out with the 12yr old and take huge enjoyment in doing NOTHING (a real first) and then we're out for lunch. Did the cinema yesterday - meeting our intellectual levels head on, the 8yr old and I did Despicable Me 3 at the cinema, all went out for dinner and then the two older ones went with the husband to watch Dunkirk. I went home and watched Dumb and Dumber (is that even what it's called? I will happily admit that as soon as the 8yr old fell asleep, I rescued my brain from the toilet and turned over to the athletics!).

Bingo tonight... eyes down...
