Always one to divide opinion...

... and clearly the temptation to say that if you don't like them, then you should probably jog on, is high, but as it's the most woeful joke on the planet, I won't....

For I am about to wax lyrical for the following blog about my love affair with jogging bottoms. But not for the gym, oh no. For out and about, mixing and mingling with the general public. Dear god no, I hear a huge number of you cry (actually you've probably all logged off by now which is fair enough - if you're still here, I promise I'll be back with something less controversial next time.)

It's my inner slob coming to the fore. They are comfortable. They are so so comfortable. And I have to say, teamed with a more fitted top or jacket, so long as the definition at the top of the trousers is seen, I personally really like the silhouette they give. I also think they are the perfect foil for my beloved wedge trainers (and yes, that is still a burgeoning relationship - more of that another day).

Would I wear them on a night out? Well never say never but at the moment, it's not high on my list of things I must wear as a glam outfit. I think it's the cuff. Perhaps one of their sister versions which are less sport luxe and more luxe (ie less elastic...) - them, taking into consideration the fickle nature of my fashion adoration, I may well consider.

For every day, on those occasions when being smart or formal (or tasteful some may add) doesn't come into the equation, I love these as an alternative to jeans.

I have a pair in charcoal from Toast that I bought when harem pants (despite mine not being particularly harem in nature) were the in thing last time round - 4 or 5 years ago? And I will admit I had relegated them to sofa slob wear for an evening aka where once favoured clothes go to die. But happy days, they have been reinstated as fit for public consumption and have seen the light of day a number of times recently.

There a plethora of them around now. I did a post on them last season and they were fewer of them on the ground. Whilst not yet being ten a penny, they are definitely becoming more mainstream.

So starting at the more reasonable end of the market - these ones being in a jersey although there are a couple which are in a silkier fabric. Less controversial/pj stylee for the supermarket perhaps?

Black jersey harem trousers from Next for £18 in Petite, Regular and Tall. I wouldn't personally call them harem - to my mind they have to conjure up images of MC Hammer himself to qualify for the title of harem.

As much as I do love them with my Ash wedges or hi tops, I am liking them with the Gigi inspired sandal (of which it seems there are oodles around again)

Secondly another great version (love the detail on the tie front) in what seems to be a silky jersey fabric (just to confuse matters). Also available in Black online. From DPs this seems to be on the spenney side, so I'm assuming they're a decent quality (that one will come and bit me on the bum, of that I can be sure - will see if I can check them out on Thursday). I also love them in the navy.

Slightly more utilitarian but these do put me in mind of the more expensive pairs that adorn Net a Porter and Matches websites.

Now these from New Look I have seen in real life and I can confirm that they are a lovely silky fabric - easily as good as the FCUK trousers I got in the sale (which were more expensive even in the sale and were 60% off!)

Whistles have been a fan of the sports luxe look (try saying that after a drink or ten) for a couple of seasons now and there is no better time to shop with them as there is 25% off with Grazia at the mo.

These again are of a more utilitarian nature - probably my least favourite out of them all - something ever so slightly Umbro about them....

These however, are the most similar I would say to my Toast ones and would definitely be on my list to buy if I didn't have an identical pair.

And in Black albeit a slightly washed out black (which I have to say I quite like). I will admit and say that with a court shoe is probably not the way I shall be going.

Not entirely sure what's happening with the styling at Zara this season. It appears to be eclectic to say the least. But again, I've seen these in the flesh and they're great. I adore the zip detail. Would look fantastic in the summer with Havs or other flat thong style sandals. (ooh or the multi strap wedges I got from Clarks last year. hmmmm)

Remind me actually of the J Brand Earharts from a couple of seasons ago which I couldn't buy as they were less attractive trouser and more pedal pusher on me. But these could be a great substitute. Not, however to match with army style shirt as seen on here. Far too high fashion for my more basic tastes. Available in black as well as light khaki seen here.

So there we have it. It's hardly something for everyone but it would be such a boring world if we all liked the same thing. Hopefully someone else will join me in my love for these this season. Anyone? Would love to hear how you're styling yours.

Moving onto my outfits for yesterday and today which involve trying to keep warm yesterday and making way for my new scarf today. A change is as good as a rest they say. It's amazing how something as reasonably priced as a Sainsburys scarf can give new life to a set of very old clothes. The Jesire jacket, The Husband bought me from Brown Thomas the Christmas just after our daughter was born and she's 9 in September. I got the jeans from the Earl store at Bicester the same year. The handbag was one I had for my second son's Christening four years ago - in fact it's a replacement as mine was stolen but still - it's originally a good age. All brought back together with a £10 scarf.

I've heard a rumour that warmer climes are on the way - admittedly only a degree or two. Am trying not to get too giddy.

So Winter, you're back then.

I know, I know, it was ludicrously optimistic of me to get all excited about the start of Spring when it was only February. And yes, I was probably the only person in the country who was genuinely shocked on Friday when we woke up to another white out. More chuffing snow?! It's not like I haven't lived in this country for a gazillion years (forever bar a few in the middle to be fair) and as such, should be fully prepared for snow as late as April.

But darn it, those couple of sunny days had really got me so excited about flesh. Not oodles of it on show, but maybe a wrist or, god forbid, even an ankle? A sniff of upper chest that isn't encased in wool (or acrylic if I'm wearing the H&M tartan scarf).

Not to be deterred - stiff upper lip and all that - I decided in for a Spring penny, in for a pound, I would not be beaten by that most feeble of opponents - the Great British Weather. So I was the one looking like a veritable tool on Friday in my white jeans. Winter white is what I like to refer to it as, in one of the most ridiculous fashion sayings known to man. What you can't see in the photo below as were running out of time, is that I did also sport a huge cream full length Monsoon cardigan, cream woolly hat and grey wristwarmers. So actually I wasn't cold at all. Just rather pale. I know the jury will be out and even when it comes back I will still be in the minority of thinking it's acceptable to wear white in the snow, but I don't care. That's what washing machines are for!

However it did get me thinking that I can't be the only one who is beyond sick of channeling Eskimo chic. I pretty much get to this point every season (it's no different at the end of the Summer when I pine for boots, scarves and woolies) and surprise, surprise, this year is no exception.

So it's back to being freezing cold (we had more snow here last night although thank goodness it's not sticking around all day) and I am bored of all my winter clothes, yet it's not worth buying anything else to add to it.

The land of inbetween. I declare that it therefore must be scarf season.

Not a full on woolly winter wonder but something in a lighter colour(s) that will do a job of keeping the chill off your neck and chest plus be an easy addition to your Spring wardrobe.

I appreciate that scarves are not for everyone - personally I love them in most guises. I will admit I do struggle with a silk square one. Even in Hermes, I still manage to look pure trolley dolly. Just can't get it right at all (although did used to wear one as a headscarf a couple of years ago when I was growing out a short bob and having an Audrey moment)

However a lighter fabric in a print or colours that are a nod to Spring can transform outfits that you were bored of wearing.

Plus with Mother's Day round the corner - a perfect present idea.

So starting with some that I've found on my travels. There are so many, I'll probably do another round up later on, just in time for Mother's Day, in case anyone is after more ideas.

I've posted the first scarf before but I think it works perfectly all year round. Will tie in so well if anyone has a plethora of wine clothes from the A/W and will look stunning with more summery blush colours (I am giddy about getting mine back out for this year). Even works with black, brown or tans.

Tangerine (and geometric print - not necessarily together mind) is due to be a big colour this S/S (I can hear half of you cheering and half of you moaning). I love this scarf from Cos. I'd wear it with black and tan for now (also lovely with navy), just giving a lift of colour to those older outfits. This is also a great work wear one I would recommend. I remember only too well those days when it was too warm to wear a coat over a blazer, but you were too cold with just the jacket on. Et voila problem solved.

On a less work oriented note, I am still slightly obsessed by all things stars, despite not having caved yet.

Chain print DVF scarf from My Wardrobe at £173. It's called Peach although I'm not entirely sure why as it's looks very blue to me. Even the chain itself, at a stretch, I don't think could be considered peach. But who I am I to wonder why. If it made its way into my wardrobe, courtesy of Mother's Day, I shan't be complaining.

Thinking about it though - this one may be more versatile. Colourwise, great for adding immediate interest to old dark winter outfits. I love this shade of blue. Perfect with both navy and black and love it with the fuchsia they've teamed it with below. The more I look at it, the more I need it.

I'm not normally a silk scarf person - as you may have noticed I use them as an extra layer, shrouding myself in one, blanket stylee. But each year coming into the Spring and then into the Autumn, I always find that I have a lack of lighter ones to wear.

Which is handy then, that I went to Sainsburys today - nothing to do with the fact that this is the final day of their 25% off offering. The whole promotion had passed me by. Only thanks to the wonderful Fiona who owns Avenue 57 that I had realised it was on.

I wasn't in the market for anything (apart from Cilit Bang mousse which you can't buy from Waitrose. First world problems clearly) but for research purposes, obviously I had to have a good look.

And fortunately I did as there were a couple of things it would have been rude to leave behind.

Firstly this silky scarf. Inspired by the DVF one above (I appreciate the colours are completely different) and having mused over the benefits of a silky long scarf, this one caught my eye. One of the great things about scarves with a host of colours in, is the ability to tie together an outfit of different colours you might not usually put together. Pink and yellow really wouldn't be my first port of call for a Spring outfit, but this scarf has converted me. Perfect also as an addition for a monochrome outfit (which would be mostly black in my case at this time of year) and giving it a haul into this season. Rather By Malene Birger to my mind. Except it was £8.

Now this is actually the number that initially caught my eye in the scarf department. Missoni eat your heart out. I have had various Missoni scarves over the years (and either lost or sold them - yes I am a complete and utter bloody moron) and do definitely have a soft spot for the brand.

This is an homage to all things zig zag - I utterly adore the colours - shades of pink, coral, black, khaki and pale blue. When put together, should probably ming but in reality, I honestly thing this is stunning. Can't wait to wear it. Heavy enough for this time of year with a sturdier jacket but will work equally as well come the warmer weather. Not sure if you can see, but it's made of different textures and knits. I'm probably biased but I think it looks a lot more expensive than it is.

I also happened upon this denim jacket. I do have a denim jacket - a collarless one I got from Red Herring at Debenhams for £12, 8 years ago. Seeing as the one below was £22 (and then 25% off), I thought I might be able to justify it as an impulse purchase. I purposely bought a smaller size to have it snug (still fits on the shoulders and arms - Zara take note). I did trawl through them all as the washes were slightly different and I wanted one as faded as possible. I had previously tried on the Forever 21 one which was great but £25 (still a total bargain) but as the difference between them is negligible fit wise, the cheaper one obviously came up trumps. Not sure I'd be able to tell it came from Sainsburys.

Let's get this Spring thing off the ground.

So following on from yesterday with all things Spring. The sun is still shining and I'm studiously ignoring the weather forecast on my iPhone that has it sitting at a rather unSpring 3 degrees for the rest of the week.

Let's march on with my Spring resolutions of the fashion variety. Now I never make too many as clearly you're setting yourself up for a fall (or is that just me?). Plus I am the most mortifyingly fickle individual and therefore I change my mind a lot. I eat humble pie as a dessert on a regular basis. I hold my hands up and say I am pathetic and reserve the right to go back on everything I say. Particularly if I lay claim to disliking something at the beginning of the season as chances are I'll love it two months in.

So being prudent with my predictions, here goes.

I will only buy things that I utterly adore. (this is not justification for purchasing and keeping jacket from yesterday. But it does help.) The way I sort the wheat from the chaff with regards to this, is do I want to wear it immediately. If I don't and I'm able to leave it in the bag for a week (weather depending) then I should take it back.
I shall try something new. Quite difficult to do when tying in with the above as I am a creature of habit. But whether it's a new colour, a new style of something or a new print, I shall be embracing a new stance to part of my wardrobe that sings SS13.
My legs will be on show this Summer. (I'm not going to get ahead of myself and fail before I start, by saying Spring. Realistically it will take me till Summer to layer up the fake tan so you can't see me from space.) I blogged profusely last year about the exceptionally bad relationship I have with my knees. Well I am going to give myself a good slap and get over it. Life is too short, in the scheme of things they're really not that bad. And they'll be a hell of a lot better at 40 than they will be at 65. Just do it.
Hunting down more niche brands and stores. I will admit, the older I get, the more I struggle with buying a bag or a jacket and then seeing it on every 18 to 25 year old strutting her stuff. Zara I'm looking at you. Yes I know, I'm the world's biggest Zara advocate but it seems, so is everyone else now. At 40 I'm not sure I want to be wearing the same scarf or shoes as the world and his dog. (There clearly are going to be exceptions to the rules - see above point about being Mrs Fickle and let's ignore the jacket I bought yesterday). But in an ideal world, I'd like to be able to follow trends but would like something a bit more individual. Something slightly off piste. This certainly isn't going to happen with everything I buy (I can't abandon the HS and big brands completely). But there are so many fantastic brands out there, that aren't ubiquitous on the High Street, it's my mission this year to track them down and add some gems into my wardrobe. All the better if they're British. The same goes for local shops. Am hoping to track down some great boutiques and local stores round the country (that hopefully therefore will do mail order). If anyone knows of any that they think I might be interested in, please do let me know!
Not keeping things for best. This normally applies to expensive things that you love but never get round to wearing as a) you don't want to ruin them and b) you want to save the for a special occasion. And end up therefore only wearing twice a year. That silk shirt will work perfectly on a day to day basis. I would perhaps draw the line at the Temperley evening dress for the school run.

And I think that's probably enough for the time being. Chances of me sticking to them all aren't high. But at least it should give me some food for thought with regards to the coming Season.

Now staying on (that should be clinging on really, shouldn't it?) to the Spring theme, I have cracked out the white jeans. A new pair of skinnies - the same fantastic pair of skinnies from Boden. (fail number one on the niche brand then.)

There is absolutely no reason why white jeans shouldn't be worn in the Spring (there probably is a reason why they shouldn't be worn when loading the dishwasher after the kids had tomato soup last night mind - hairy moment there). Especially when the sun is shining. I find it easiest to team with colours that start light and shade to darker (easily ending in black - I stuck to dark gunmetal today). A mix of textures also really helps. I think it works and that's it - I've broken my white jean cherry. It feels so much better than wearing another Winter combo. Good for the soul I promise you, try it and see. Loads of photos as RR1 said the light was good..... (who am I to argue with an 8 yr old)

Admittedly not doing very well on my resolutions today with my Zara, Primark and Boden items as mentioned but thumbs up for the Virginia Johnson scarf and Ash Virgins. Actually does go to show that buying things slightly off piste (smaller brands and more unusual styles) do pay off longevity wise. Both were quite expensive but are a couple of years old and get worn regularly. A nod to trends from the last couple of years but different enough to be able to wear them again and again (I may well be deluding myself - high high chance - and justifying expensive purchases. Either way, I love wearing them so it has paid off!)

So white jeans. Are you ready ladies? Any Spring Resolutions from you?

It smells like Spring

Which means two things.

One - out come the jackets and away go the scarves. As much as I am aware I have an embarrassingly large collection of scarves, by this time each year I am bored to tears of them. My neck feels like it's got rickets. Needs. Sun.

And as if I don't have enough jackets (I am officially obsessed - with lots of things granted, but I shall fess up to jackets today), I simply could not resist this one when I saw it last week in Zara. Truth be told I was actually leaving the store (with a stash of three linen tees in a bag that were reduced to £3.99 each. That scraping sound you just heard was me, crawling along the bottom of the sales barrel). Of course I wasn't really super late anyway and I definitely wasn't even more late for the school run by stopping, grabbing it and paying. Much.

It does very much remind me of my impulse purchase from last year - the navy scarf silk jacket, also from Zara, which was a great buy - one of my fave things from the summer. Hence it was easy to justify this. I think I may even love it more. I got the medium which I think is the largest size they do and as it's TRF, I have to say it's rather snug on the sleeves.

But I simply adore it. May have worn it every day since I got it....... And the weather has obliged me by warming up nicely. I apologise in advance as this will figure a lot in the coming months.

Secondly it means Spring resolutions of the fashion variety. These I am saving for tomorrow. And get thinking as I want to hear yours too......

And finally, I have found some jeans that I love. In my wardrobe. I knew they were there and I thought they might be ok but they pretty much fit the bill of every other pair of blasted boyfriend jeans that I've tried on. They're not what I had anticipated - I had envisaged them being looser through the thigh and slightly tapered on the ankle but a) they were pretty impossible to find and b) any that I may have come across that were vaguely like that were deeply unflattering. Complete mum jeans with a saggy arse.

So this is my version of the boyfriend jean - as many of you had advised (and what I've been doing for years anyway!) a straight leg jean rolled up.

I did also try some men's jeans on (only in Next) and the results were infinitely better than pretty much all of the women's jeans were (bar the Paige ones which were hardly any different from the 8 year old ones below). It is my mission now to track down some dirty denim 501s.

Love this outfit. Am (hugely excitingly!) heading next Saturday to a fashion bloggers meet and this may well just be recycled as an outfit. It is so so comfy.

So we have good and bad boyfriend news.

Just in case The Husband happens to be reading this - clearly I mean of the jean variety. Boom boom.

I'm saving my spate of probably hilarious photos for tomorrow with my visit to Forever 21.

So the good news is that I may have found some boyfriend jeans which are contenders. Bad news to follow.

Starting with one that lots of people complete rave about. The Gap 1969 sexy boyfriend jeans. I have to say the jury is out here. One reason being that I throw up a little bit in my mouth when I write or read "sexy boyfriend" (really??!!! Grown ups do buy these, you know. Although have to say it's enough to put me off)

The second reason being they are short. Ok so I am tall. (is probably a more appropriate thing to say.) But they are just too short on me. Hugely irritatingly they're labelled as 28/32. Well. They're not. As I mentioned before. They clearly have a funny way of measuring 32 inches.

Actually now looking at these photos - they do look like different jeans. But these were the newest stock they had instore apparently. And these are the only ones online.

But being positive, they are a gorgeous wash and I love the amount of distressing. And they're a good price. However they're also (and now I'm being fanatically picky) ever so slightly too tight round the calf for me. I now know I'm looking for a looser fit rather than a tapered mum style jean. (I'm not convinced men wear tapered jeans so not entirely sure why some boyfriend jeans are so tapered through the bottom of the leg)

I didn't love them so much when I tried them on, but I have to say I do like the look of them in these photos. Maybe my irritation at them being too short (and they are too short - it's not apparent from these pics but we're verging on Huck Finn territory) clouded my judgement. Another random negative is the changing rooms in Gap in Tunbridge Wells are beyond revolting. Hideous carpet, paint peeling, half changing rooms/half storage rooms - just ghastly. I was quite surprised actually. The changing rooms that time forgot.

However worth trying on is the verdict. (and they're 30% off at the moment - not sure until when..)

Now don't laugh but I resorted to The White Company. (this was actually last week but I wanted to be able to try on some more before posting)

They wouldn't be top of my list when jean shopping but I have to say I was reasonably impressed with their boyfriend jean offering. Beautiful soft denim (can't see from the pic but really great quality) and a decent loose but not too loose slouch. A slightly longer length and a nice fit on the derriere (again, you can't see from the pics but I was really pleased with them when I tried them on) Negative is that there is no distressing. And I've decided that I do want some distressing. However they are a lovely pale washed denim (as it says on the tin) and are definitely a good option if you're not after an exceptionally lived in pair. £85 so not cheap but the denim really does feel worth it (and again, there's always a promotional code winging around. Let google be your friend)

Lastly I resorted to bringing out the big guns. My first premier denim pair of boyfriend jeans. And oh balls, they're gorgeous. But here is the Bad News. They're £250 in Fenwicks. (£210 from Coggles below though - quite a big difference - a whole pair of Gap jeans difference!)

Stunning soft easy to wear denim, beautiful shade of washed, vintage looking fabric, beyond comfortable and an excellent length (on me - tall bird. Not a problem if you're shorter - just roll up more).

As you can see from the photos (hopefully) the difference on the fit on the behind is huge. Perfect fit. However this is basically a loose skinny jean (described here as a skinny boyfriend jean (go forth & be hugely peed off at how inflated the prices are over here. Gah.) Of which I already have an Earl pair and an old Zara pair. But they were so so comfy and were they not so expensive I would have bought them in a hearbeat.

One to beat.

One more in the fold to check out tomorrow - I'm a trier if nothing else... From my beloved Zara. I think they will look utterly sheeite on the bum though. The photo isn't selling them to me but I've learnt you can't judge a boyfriend jean by its photo.

So thoughts? I refuse to give in (ooh also must try the Warehouse ones on tomorrow and get them out of my system) I shall also be tracking down a men's pair to compare and contrast. However I am getting jeans blindness...... Anyone else had any joy? Handily it's still boot weather (which don't really lend itself to boyfriend jeans) and it doesn't show any sign of tropical temps soon.

Round up of todays outfit for a meeting and a trip to BHS to purchase the most beautiful bed quilt and cushions for RR1's bedroom. Beyond impressed and so so reasonable. Highly recommended.
