A legitimate reason to buy socks as a present

For yourself.  Or you could always buy them for the other half and then just steal them.

I had a couple of pairs of these, I reckon five years ago?  Cable knit grey and camel ones from La Redoute.  I loved this look.  Skinny jeans, ankle boots with chunky socks peeking out of the top.  I have zero recollection what I was wearing on top.  This is now irrelevant - now I would be wearing them, again with ankle boots (I've just ordered some fabulous old school work boots that they'll be great with), skinnies - be them denim, leather or pleather and chunky knits.

Clearly I am obsessed with all things chunky at the moment but I do think that chunky on the bottom is the best way to balance out oversized on the top with something more slender going on in the middle.

These aren't the best example of what I mean but hopefully they will give you an idea.  Plus, these are great for filling that gap between shorter jeans and the tops of you boots - also great for adding extra texture and a coordinating shade or additional colour.

How about with thick tights and a skirt....?  I can see me needing more than one pair of these (obviously I dumped the La Redoute ones last year not having worn them for a couple of years... although there is one bag in the attic I haven't looked in)

And they have the added advantage of being warm too.

Starting with the most expensive - these are your luxury version.

Wolford Merino Slouch Socks £25

Now I wouldn't be wearing these over the knee - for me, the only reason you'd do this is if you were partaking in a fancy dress party as Brittany Spears.  Roll them down.

ASOS Mix Knit Over the Knee Tipped socks £6

These are perhaps top of my list.  I love the detailing, I love the shade of grey and I love the price.

Jonathan Astor Cable Knit socks £10

However the bargains of the day have to be at good old Asda.

2 pack textured knee socks were £4 now £2

Or you can push the boat out for £4.... Cable knit knee high socks

Lighter shades now and we're still on a bargain hunt.

Calvin Klein Crochet over the knee socks were £20 now £8

And a studded knee high pair... Calvin Klein Stud Knee High Socks £16

Or a pale grey pair - again £16

Brown Cable knit at River Island for £7 (what is that makes the word "brown" sound so unattractive.  I'm going to rechristen these Tobacco - which I appreciate on reflection isn't exactly politically correct but in my book it beats brown, plus you're allowed to say cigarette pants... *hopes she hasn't offended anyone*)

I had some lovely pale camel ones from La Redoute which obviously a) I can't find there and b) I can't find anywhere else.  Soddus Lawus.  These are the most similar (not ) I can find.

Cable Knit Knee HIgh Socks in Ecru from La Redoute £6

And again in a shade of pale grey

And finishing with a ringer... if the rest of your outfit is plain, these would be fabulous.

Striped Cable Knit Knee highs from M&S £9.50

And even better, they're actually a two pack so you get the pale grey pair for every day wear.  Result.

Now you see I could so see the outfit I had on today, benefitting from a pair of chunky socks... you can all tell me I'm bonkers but I'm going in...

So tomorrow I'm off to London to escape the burbs and for a Press Day which I look forward to reporting back on.  In the meantime this evening, the now 9yr old Aspie has decided he's building the Kallax shelving unit for his sister's bedroom.  He has already built three desks and a chest of drawers in the past week.  This looked easy.  Suffice to say I'm already through half a bottle of wine and he is uttering swear words a 9yr old really should not know. (alas I can't say I blame him as it honestly looks so incredibly simple and IS NOT)  Where is The Husband when you need him? (work do)

    2. These personalized tube socks offer you a great fashionable appearance and are made up of the softest, durable and high-quality spandex, polyester and cotton stuff, enabling you to get rid of pesky seams that are not favorable for your feet by any means.  custom made tube socks

    1. Ok I can see how that may be an issue but if you've got wide ankle boots on anyway, I think it just adds a bit more texture - just don't have them too high up your leg! (and thank you - tis totally easy to recreate!)

    2. Thank God for the chunky socks - we had a frost this morning!! I wore old M&S dark grey thermal socks with skinnies and some old grey ankle/biker boots I dug out from the loft at the weekend. I will be wearing this a LOT this winter!

    1. oh excellent suggestion. My wrist warmers I have had now for almost 8 years! They are so on their last legs but I love them so much - it's a complete miracle I haven't lost them as I have lost a dozen cheaper versions over the years)

  6. Love the idea - I wear chunky socks but have always tucked them into the boots. Not any more!
Also it might be an excuse to buy chunky ankle boots perchance?

Would you mind linking your Zara cardigan/coat if you think it might still be available? I really like the look of it. Thanks :)

    1. oh I'm so sorry but it's sold out. It was right at the end of the summer and it sold out super quickly. Having said that, it's the sort of random thing you'll find in their sale in January. I did a blog recently on some long cardigans and Mango had the best options x

  7. So glad you spotted this trend. I saw it in the h&m brochure last winter with khaki jumper and khaki socks. Thought i could just raid the hubby's sock drawer.

  8. Haha. I was doing this yesterday, woolly, burgundy, cable socks with ankle boots. More because I couldn't find any thin cotton socks in the morning. The trick to not making your calves look too chunky is not to have the socks too long, so they just peep over the top of your boots. I think mine were from Celtic & Co, I have some longer ones from hush & similar wrist warmers that have lasted well. Toast have some nice ones and plumo have some patterned, bright ones.

Love the zara coatigan. I have a couple of long grey and slate blue one. Too much chance of rain, here. I'm considering changing from a thin, Ilse Jacobsen raincoat to full winter parka soon. It's been so chilly here!

    1. Totally agree although if you do really have really long legs they are great for making you look more in proportion! I was sure they had some last year at hush but they don't seem to do them this year - only short ones. Looks like no rain here today which is great - i'm cracking out the new Acne cardigan!

    2. Ooh, looking forward to seeing the Acne cardigan! Shame hush don't have the long ones, mine are from a few years ago. Agree about making your legs in proportion, mine are quite long but toned/muscly, I just need to watch where the socks come up to in relation to the boots. Lovely cosy autumn look, though.

  10. Am SO happy that I was convinced by your fantastic blog to buy the Seven Boot Lane Caitlyns *smug face* (even though I agonised, they weren't cheap but they really are lovely!) and will be digging out the chunky socks too. Love the Zara cardigan - wish I hadn't missed that one! Keep up the good work! :)

    1. I wore mine to death last year - in fact I've just ordered another pair from them which are sightly different but should work really well alongside them. AMazing quality, aren't they? Shame you missed the Zara cardigan - it was a £60 bargain!

  11. Love this whole outfit Kat! I bought wrist warmers last year on your recommendation and I have to say they have been a super addition to my wardrobe. They really do help with staying snug and I like that I can also drive with them on. I bought the black cashmere ones in Hush sale last year and found some great grey with a pink trim cashmere Clements Ribeiro ones in TK Maxx. I'm a fan-thanks for the idea Kat!

  14. Yes - flat not bevelled. They are identical to the Fired Earth ones. We have bevelled in our bathrooms, plain not crackle. Do you want me to take a pic of both and email you? We went for the more modern bevell looking (I think it is) tile as we have very traditional floors in there. I have smoke grout between all the tiles - a darkish grey but not a charcoal. I love the character of the crackle glaze in the kitchen but to be totally honest with you, you do have to get close up to see the crackle! Pics?
