Talking about the things you love..

.. and things that come around again and again.

Trench coat?  You're up.  I have battered on about you already this Spring (although to be fair, it was at the back end of the Winter at the beginning of March) but they're too useful not to chat about again - plus there are new ones out now.

This is also a warning - I fear I may be about to channel all things 70s.  It's almost as if I start embracing a look and before I know it, I've gone in, all guns blazing.  Not that there is anything particularly 70s per se about a trench coat, it's more how I plan to wear it.  With a floral midi dress and my good old (new) knee high boots.

Having said that, when I was packing to go away this weekend, it was this that I thought = perfect.  I wanted something that I could layer under in case it was cold and something vaguely showerproof (vaguely...).  Perfect with trousers and ideal with a jumpsuit.  I was sorted.

It's also, as I've said before, the go to cover up for dresses or skirts.  Mini, midi or maxi.  I like both an oversized number - which I have in a tan and a more fitted version which I have in a navy.

I am still lamenting not being able to snag the Acne Lucie green trench (although at £700 it would have involved beans for the rest of the year) and I do still think an oversized green trench is something I would adore.  Although khaki is probably more practical and one of the reasons for writing this blog now, is that I found one of these last week in Anthropologie.  Which then made me remember how useful the tan one is that I have and hey presto - my packing problems for the weekend were sorted.

This is the one I found although I had to look twice as they say it's brown (but then it's listed as khaki... much confusion).  It's GORGEOUS.  I could have sworn I took a photo of me in it, but I can't find one anywhere.  Boo.  Trust me.  Please.  It's pretty awesome. (if you like an oversized look that is.  If you don't, then move right along, nothing to see here).

This is definitely a more accurate picture I would say, from the Selected Femme website but there's only a titchy size left there.

Khaki again but not quite as oversized from Mango.

I am always being asked where my Zara trench is from (duh - Zara!) but it was last season.  This one is the most similar I could find.  For a song.

Paler and still on the larger side.

J by Jasper Conran Camel Ultimate Trench Coat was £90 now £72

Loving the cream... will it love me back?

Monki Classic Mac £70

Oversized again in navy.

Grace & Oliver Molly Slouchy Coat in Navy were £255 now £195

Or a pinstripe version.

Grace & Oliver Martha Pinstripe Trench Coat in Navy was £265 now £195

This is the one I have - it's definitely a cross between a dress coat and a trench with regards to the fabric.  Not practical but gorgeous and worthy of a wedding.  The material is heavenly.

J by Jasper Conran Navy Longline Trench Coat was £95 now £47.50

Principles by Ben de Lisi Neutral Coat was £65 now £32.50

I have also had people say they're too short for a trench.  Not if you get a shorter one, you're not.

See by Chloe Cotton Canvas Trench Coat was £485 now £198.85

A far more reasonable version at Mango.

Classic Cotton Trench Coat £69.99

Or from Sandro - a black version.

Malory Cotton and Linen was £369 now £184.50

Another black version at ASOS.

Classic trench £55

Finishing with a couple of more randoms but ones that I still love.

Good old yellow.

Mara Trench Coat in Yellow from Anthropologie £168

Or add a print?

Embroidered Floral Trench Coat from Anthropologie £188

And to prove how much I am trenched up at the moment.  Two pics from the weekend.  Loved our weekend in Margate, we will be back.   In the Turner Gallery after a jug of Sangria at lunchtime.  Can I please point out that there are pieces of the exhibit lying around to touch and feel, I didn't vandalise it!

Hope everyone else had a good Bank Holiday weekend.  I shall be continuing my 70s theme this week.  You have been warned.  Next up - the most random thing I don't think anyone will guess (have a stab if you feel like it!)  Oh and I've got a beauty one on the cards.

  1. Just sent back a very nice Warehouse navy trench (too long) and am waiting on a mucho bargainous Uniqlo one as its replacement. Could be tempted by the black Asos one if this also turns out to be a dud, although I hope it doesn't as I really want a navy one (that's going to make me into Emanuelle Alt - it will be a magic trench coat).

  2. I love a trench, more fitted than Oversize due to my petite size. And therein lies the problem, the sleeves are often too long on regular sizes. I've just returned the most perfect summer coat due to it swamping me, sleeves included, if I could only grow a few inches...

    2. That's okay if it's just the sleeves, but quite often it's the shoulders as well, and if I size down then it's quite often too tight. I may order on the off chance when there's free returns, but usually I go for petite sizing, especially if there's a belt as it'll be on my waist rather than down by my hips.
On the plus size, I finally took the plunge and ordered a jumpsuit, having heard several people say that they're some sort of magic garment and really do fit all sizes. Mine was a wrap top jersey one from Baukjen, and it's true, not too long in the legs, and I can choose how the waist sits. Being wrap top it's also easy to get in and out of, and is okay on my ample boobs. I've got a baby's first birthday on Sunday, so now my outfit is sorted - well apart from shoes, jacket and accessories!

  3. I had an identical yellow trench in the 80s, I wish I still had it 😂

  4. Didn't you buy the khaki Alexa Chung trench? They seem like a very useful coat for this time of year!

    1. I took it back. It was basicallly oversized in the wrong places and as much as I so so wanted to love it - it wasn't quite right. Check me out!!! Abstemious and sensible for once in my life.

  5. If I could pick only one.. genuinely the most comfortable are the Golden Goose (although horses for courses..) The Air & Grace (which took NO getting used to at all) or the Ash Dazed. I guess it just depends which style you like. For entry level though - I also find Stan Smiths super comfy too but prefer the glitz of the others.!

  6. Sorry - that was three pairs.. but I think ultimately it should come down to comfort and so those three win. But for the put on and go no bother whatsoever, it's definitely the Air & Grace.x

  7. I have a black burberry one with little puffed sleeves I adore. I got it in a local high end charity shop. Can I ask about the Hush jumpsuit? I didn't get on with their fabric jumpsuit - too much puffy material around the waist which looked like maternity wear. How is the denim one?

    1. Hmm I think you may have had the same problem with this one - the reason it works on me is that I''m tall and so the fabric is stretched out!!

  9. Hi Kat! Just wondering if you had considered and dismissed a Burberry trench? I keep wondering if I will take the plunge but a trench never seems exciting enough for that amount of money. That being said my mum has one which is well over 30 years old and looks almost as good as new. Would be interested to hear your thoughts ...

    1. I have tried on soooooooo many. Actually I do have one (but it's got the burberry on the outside. DON'T ASK. It was many years pre Daniella Westbrook....). But they don't fit me properly. I look like a tool in them. I prefer a much slouchier fabric which I've not seen them in. I LOVE the look on other people and if it suited me and fitted me properly, I would buy one in a heartbeat as I think they are completely timeless and a great investment. xxx

    2. May I ask what the sizing is like on the jasper Conran one ? I'm usually a 10 but they only have 8 or 12 left ... Would a 12 be too slouchy or is there no such thing ?
