Is this the year.....

...that I actually manage to track down the perfect pair of coated black jeans?

So I have my fabulous (and they are truly truly fabulous) hush leather leggings but... I'm scared to wear them all the time.   Scared because I know you can (allegedly) wash them, but, I'm not going to lie, I'm terrified to do that.  Clearly the plan is to wear them until they walk to the dry cleaners on their own.  Or until someone else fesses up that they've washed them and gives me second by second instructions.....

Plus I could genuinely wear coated skinnies pretty much every day in the Winter.  I know that's immensely dull but frankly, at 42 I've got to the point  where trying to ring the changes daily doesn't fill me with any joy and I just want to wear what I love and what I feel great in.  And for the foreseeable future, I know that it's going to be a round robin of skinnies, knitwear, shirts, sweatshirts and a variety of cardigans, blazers, coats and capes that are going to float my boat.

And I genuinely don't have a pair of skinny coated jeans in black.  I have leggings but I don't have jeans.  Being tall, with so many tops, I need something slightly more robust than leggings at the waistband and that equals jeans.  I did have some fabulous ones which I've lived in, from Cos and 2nd Day but after extensive washing, the coating is now lining the drum of my washing machine.  They just look like sort of scabby old trousers now.

So I am in dire need of another pair.  Faced with the age old dilemma...buy cheap and buy often or spend more and they'll last longer.   Will the cheap pair stay in shape for the whole day?  Will the expensive pair go in the machine?

Let the research commence.

Absolutely gutted they don't have these in my size as there is nothing I like more at this time of my life than the words "high rise".  Aka muffin smuggling.  It's clearly only a matter of time before I manage to tuck both my boobs and my muffin in at the same time but at least for this year, we can focus on just something to encase the spare tyre in.  These looked like they would do the perfect job.

BLK Denim Jeans 22 coated high rise skinny jeans were £145 now £72.50

I have to say I do love the look of this biker version from Great Plains.

Blitz Coated Skinny Jeans £70 (I love the detailing on the knee)

Topshop jeans are generally a fabulous fit (not the skinny ones with the knee slits - dear lord, there are no words to describe how hideous these are on a middle aged woman with flabby knees.  Small children would puke) and there are some great coated options.

MOTO Black Coated Jamie Jeans £45  I have to say - this outfit - FULL STOP.  Watch this space for a blog very shortly inspired by this - how can I not do one?

MOTO Black Zip Ankle Coated Leigh Jeans £45

Now I haven't tried these from hush - but I do know that they are on the petite side which will suit some of you down to the ground perfectly.

Black Coated jeans from hush £75 and I have a little 10% off code for you... PUMPKIN15 till the 8 Nov.

I have the porridge (aka beige) version of these and I LOVE them.  I did order these ones but they sent me the non waxed ones and the waxed versions still haven't arrived..... I'm not sure these are a shiny wax, definitely more of a subtle coating which will be perfect for lots of you.

High Rise Super Skinny jeans from Boden £69 A2G2 should give you 20% off.

Nothing at Mint Velvet which is a crying shame as their triple zip jeans (now called The Phoenix Jeans) are one of my favourite fits on the market.

But I have to say - for a one stop shop, the best choice would be to order from ASOS.  There are lots of different brands which you could buy separately, but the luxury of ordering them all and having them delivered in one package, is so much easier than going to each retailer separately.  Ok so the sending of them all back is a total pain in the behind (god I loathe going to the Post Office) although I do believe if you've paid the Premier delivery thingymajig, you can get a courier free to come and pick them up (I am a definite signer upper to this - £9.99 a year is what I paid and next day delivery of whatever you want and however much you want is a total no brainer to me)

Starting at the top of the tree with these from Diesel.

Diesel Debbie High Waisted Coated Denim Jean was £150 now £105

These from Warehouse.  Got to be tried.

Warehouse leather look coated jeans £48.  Although my cunning plan falls apart as soon as I've started as everyone else has clearly had the same idea and they're in v scant supply at ASOS.  Still available in all sizes at Warehouse though.

They do also do a coated jean...for £42 - again Warehouse but from ASOS.  Or if you're ordering the above from Warehouse then you might want to throw these in for a comparison and free delivery.

I'm going to try the River Island ones whilst I'm there £42 (I did try the pleather ones from there last year which came apart at the seams but these look more robust)

Would be rude not to throw in the New Look ones for comparison.... £24.99  Now it does say these are apparently low waisted.  Either she's a midget or they've got that wrong.

Mango Coated Skinny Jean £34.99 These they don't actually have at Mango in the black - only in the grey...although to be fair, they may be the same pair...

Last up - a slightly different version from Banana Republic.  Slightly smarter but still perfect for casual too.  Plus ideal for a night out (can you ever have too many pairs?)
Sloan-fit faux leather front skinny ankle pant from Banana Republic £69.50

Finishing with outfit from yesterday - and these are the Porridge waxed versions of the Boden ones above.  Perfect, to be honest with you but dare I say, I would like them a tad more waxy?

Cream cashmere boyfriend jumper - hush
Porridge waxed jeans - Boden
Brown/grey/khaki suede boots - Eileen Fisher
Knitted cardigan - Zara
Brown suede bag - Coccinelle

And finishing, as I promised The Husband and the 11yr old I would (and it is pretty good), a picture of their cake.  I will confess I had a total sense of humour failure about this on Thursday night as it, funnily enough, proved more difficult than the You Tube obsessed 11yr old had lead me to believe.  Luckily, as I was swearing like a navvy, throwing wine back, threatening to throw the darn thing in the bin as my kitchen was covered with disintegrating chocolate cake and frosting, himself came home from work and saved the day.

Bless the both of them - it turned out to be a triumph.

And the two boys were both over the moon with it.  Very successful party yesterday for 14 of their friends - that's that done for another year.  Today, a lovely family day just with the boys as the 11yr old went to Chessington for a birthday party.  We went furniture shopping and came home with a new bench.  I am now cushion shopping for the bench, glass of wine, Strictly followed by The X Factor.  I love Autumnal Saturday nights at home with an extra hour in bed in the morning.  For the first in 11yrs, maybe, "maybe", with the children being slightly older, we may get to actually enjoy it*

*fat chance.

Can I also interject to say that four minutes into our lovely family evening of watching The X Factor, The Husband has absconded to the study and I'm screaming "WILL YOU ALL SHUT UP AND SIT STILL" at various children.

Five minutes in, I'm left with one child, a bottle of wine and straw.  That's bliss.

  1. I have the Mango ones from earlier this year (mine are definite ly black tho). They are WONDERFUL. For like a glove but without being constricting. Great finish. Make everything I wear with them look cool and expensive. And currently being kept for best cos I'm scared to wash them :D. Might just have to buy a second pair...

    1. YOU SEE??!!! It's always the way. You find something you love and won't wear them as we're terrified of wearing them out. It doesn't matter whether it costs £10 or £100 - if you love something you don't want to risk ruining it! You should definitely buy another pair!) I'm going to order them, thank you - were they true to size?

    2. Yes absolutely bang on size wise - I got a 10 and for once they fit me on the waist and leg wise, unheard of!

  2. I have the coated high rise from Boden in both the porridge (your fault!) and black. To my shame I haven't worn either yet but intend to over the mid-term break. The only thing with coated jeans is they are very warm (IMO) so best for days spent outdoors and not in a stuffy classroom where I spend most of my days.

I always regret not snapping up that Zara cardigan, every time you show it in a photo I shed a teeny tiny tear. (It is fab on you)

    1. That's interesting that you think they're warm... I've never found them to be any temp other than normal jeans?! If it makes you feel any better, that cardigan is actually a bugger to wear as it's so heavy and doesn't do up it keeps falling off your shoulders... definitely style over substance!

  3. I hear you re the X factor. Sorry to strike fear into your heart but with my eldest at nearly 15 and my second at nearly 13 it still isn't any better. 5 minutes in and the boys were wrestling under a pile of cushions! My 8 year old girl gave up and jumped on top. Going shopping today for a TV for my bedroom ….

  4. Great post, I have cheapie pleather leggings from h&m, but they are not very comfortable! I think I need coated jeans in my life. I love the biker style ones but might try a cheaper pair first. The mango and new look ones look great.

Great cake, but often those youtube ones look too easy. I'm scarred by a tardis cake from a few years ago... I seem to have bought most cakes since then!

  8. I have the coated pair from river island, bought 18months ago thinking they would be my trial coated pair before I upgraded to something more £££...but worn and washed many times (3 children under 5 means they are normally smeared with something and dry clean/handwash potions are not for me)...and they are incredible, have fared better than all my expensive jeans and v importantly.... no sag!

  9. I have the New Look high waist super skinny! They are only £22 have a zip front and two patch pockets to rear. Wore them recently to a sit down meal for a few hours and they kept their shape! Would deffo recommend as an extra pair at least. I am long legged and bought the regular length as plenty of length in them. Happy shopping!

  13. Amazing cake! And I have kitchen envy....

I still like my M&S coated skinniest which are in their third (?) year now, but I don't live in them as I work full time.

    1. Are they the jeggings? I never got them and so so wish I had done but they were just a tad too short for what I wanted (of course since then they'd have been PERFECT) Typical M&S - why would you carry on doing them??!!!

  15. Amazed to find this blog today, as I turned my wardrobe inside out looking for my coated skinnies this morning. They
seem to have completely disappeared! However we are preparing to move house (again), so the chances of them having been misappropriated are fairly high. Now about to check out New Look for an inexpensive replacement, just in case...

  17. Thanks for the advice! Wearing my fab Mint Velvet pleather biker leggings to death at the moment so I could do with something else to supplement them! A word of warning r.e. Great Plains. I bought a pair of their black jeans last year. DISASTER!! Totally stretched out of shape the first time I wore them and never went properly back. Steer clear IMO. Well done on the cake. It's never as easy as it looks on You Tube, is it?!? Sarah X

  18. Bought biker coated black skinnier from Zara last week was delighted as have been looking for ages. Warning/ DO NOT BUY. Within 2 hours completely bagged. Not sure if I can bring them back for this. What do you reckon??

    1. Totally. Zara quality has completely dropped off a cliff for so so many of their products. I would recommend sticking to coats, cardigans and shoes. they're v good at returns x

    2. Thanks!! Will give those Mango ones a try instead!!

  19. You need the New Look coated skinnies in "tall". They do a 34 and a 36" leg, they are about £26, they are high waisted as well. Awesome.
They fit so much better than the LTS ones which are double the price and quite frankly, baggy. Not a good look.

(Although when wearing them, the ex said I looked like I was having a mid life crisis in them, I'm ignoring that (and him) and embracing my inner 80's rock star)
