I appear to have developed a social smoking relationship with jeans.

To explain - I only wear them rarely.  Very very rarely.  I was addicted to them but have managed to completely wean myself off them.  Oh my lord. maybe this actually means I am growing up...

Although to be fair, as in the A/W I have pretty much lived in coated skinnies or leather leggings, I'd hardly say I'd graduated to the dizzy heights of any maturity.

But I do feel that, for the most part - cretinous phraseology warning - it's an evolving part of my style.  Is it because I'm getting older?  I don't think it is actually (she says, just checking that a catalogue on the doormat from Country Casuals wouldn't set any pulses racing.  Yet).  I think it's more down to a change of look.

And what have I already explored and plan on definitely wearing more of this season?  That'll be trews.  Slacks.  Pants.  Call them what you like - they're err.  Trousers.

This is great news for those of you who work (someone mentioned the difficulty in work/leisure wardrobes the other day and one of my best friends is always having this moan to me) as they are the perfect trouser for you to wear at the weekend but get double use out of during the week for work.

We are firmly entrenched in Classic here for sure.  Definitely a pat on the back and a polish of the halo from the Graceful Team with the donning of these.

However fear not, I have a cunning plan of how to turn them into a deliciously disgraceful outfit tomorrow with one humzinger of a new season item (for me, the jury is out but they're definitely worth looking at.  I shall be back tomorrow with my theory and how I think we might be wearing them).

But when it comes to trousers, what sort are we looking at this season?  Well, to be honest with you, how long is a piece of string as to what is in and what is out?  And it all depends on how you wear them, when you wear them and what you wear them with.

One thing I will say, is that when it comes to anything that's not super skinny or wide legged (including boot cut, although...watch this space), I'm going for ankle length being preferable.  Or even cropped.  Now I completely stand to be corrected on this but pretty much full length trousers when straight or tapered aren't on the agenda for me this season.

Mine that I wore last year and have continued to luckily wear into the Winter are cropped and cigarette style.  In a chino fabric, that makes them err like chinos.  Which are basically a cuffed cigarette style trouser, I've come to the conclusion.  Maybe pleated at the waistband when cigarette pants are more flat fronted?  It does depend on what suits you.

For the purposes of the trousers today, we're not going down the kick flare (small squeal) or cropped flare (already in love with) but the classic - been around forever, team it with the wrong shoes, get them the wrong length and yes you could look like an advert from M&S circa 1984 - trousers.

Which makes them sound quite difficult to master I fear.  But honestly they're not.  It's what you wear them with.  And, like I said, make sure that they are either resting on or above your ankle bone.  For me, these are the perfect foil to a more Disgraceful shoe.  Team with a logo sweatshirt and cocoon coat.  I'm planning on wearing mine with a fitted polo neck, blazer but with the Golden Goose at the bottom.

For me, it's all about mixing in a more modern style and hopefully you can get the right mix of elegant with a hint of eclectic (if that's what you're looking for of course... it sort of sums up what I *think* I'm trying to aim for)

So let's see what's out there - some new styles in but some absolute bargains in the sale.  You might need to use your imagination with some of the more formal looking styling.  If in doubt - imagine a pair of Stans on the feet.  And a cashmere jumper on top.

New in at Mango in a lovely shade of blue - slightly lighter than a navy.

Elastic Waist Trousers £49.99 in ink blue Yes - that is elasticated waist.. oh hello comfort.

Now these, to me, don't look the best in this pic, but imagine with the above shoes (or the Whistles ones below) and a knit in navy, or even a logo knit (these are definitely coming under the heading disgracefully graceful) and these would be fab.  Machine washable and a steal at this price.

Oat Aveen Trouser from Hobbs were £79 now £23

More in the sale at Whistles and I lived in my khaki ones from last year.

Sadie Slim Leg Trouser from Whistles in khaki were £95 now £47.50

I have to say though, my choice of the cuffed variety would be these from Banana Republic.

BR Monogram Faux Leather Cuff Boy Crop were £69.50 now £29.99

Bargain straight trousers at Mango now for £19.99 in navy, tobacco (to me this is more of a burnt orange) and black.  I think they look best in the navy.

Slightly different and a looser fit in a grey at Banana Republic.

Charcoal Boy Fit Roll Up were £59.50 now £24.99

I have these in the navy and absolutely adore them.  I have a 12 as they are quite high waisted and I'm very thick of middle so needed the bigger size so that they'd do up!

Straight Crop Trousers in navy were £98 now £29.40 These are an amazing amazing buy now.

Straight Crop Trousers in black were £98 now £29.40

Thinking ahead for the Summer or for now with all blacks and greys would be gorgeous.

Ankle Cigarette Pant were £98 now £29.40 These also wash like a dream and not an iota of ironing.  They also don't crease at all when you're wearing them.  Amazing.

I do find the Me+Em ones slightly more on the tapered side than truly straight but for a more tapered look, these get my vote from Autograph at M&S.

Tapered leg drape trousers £49.99

Tapered again in grey this time at Hobbs.

So have you been converted to the world of slacks yet?  Am I selling them to you with that super stylish description?  These are a definite must in my S/S wardrobe.  Yours?

Well I've had a lovely day looking at trews as well doing a gazillion washes - all the beds (I might not have changed the spare room yet since Christmas.. minger alert), done puzzles, watched Spongebob and got up early to do a dog walk.  Yes the joggers are out again in force.

Two small boys off today - a 9yr old who was bouncing off the walls and desperate to go to school, bless him and another very lethargic 7yr old who was up all night throwing his little guts up.  Every half hour all night.  Did I mention I was a slight zombie today as well?

Black ribbed longsleeved tee - River Island
Grey Lucky sweatshirt - hush
Black sleeveless long cardigan - Primark
Grey cashmere scarf - Black
Pom pom hat - Black
Charcoal harem pants - hush
Edie boots - Seven Boot Lane

I'll be back tomorrow as all plans have been shelved this week due to sick children.  Smallest has to stay off again tomorrow.  Can we just please all cross our fingers that the 11yr old doesn't go down with it too?  I *might* just be getting cabin fever...

  1. Damn you - I've just bought the Me+Em trousers in black and the swing jumper with removable snood fell into my basket as well! I'm wearing it in navy today and it's amazing, practically 2 jumpers for the price of one with the removable neck. So now I have the pebble on its way to me as well. Don't tell the husband!

    1. I promise you, those trousers will pay for themselves! I have the black wide leg ones and can't wear "that" many trousers so i've curbed the need for the black versions as well. I have the matching navy blazer to go with the trousers and am planning full on suit with sneakers look. The husband will disown me......! I simply cannot get enough of their stuff!

  2. Hey Kat. Happy New Year. Loking forward to another year of your style inspo! Do you think white trainers are now a classic or close to? I'm looking to snag a pair for Spring but don't want to be the mutton out of touch.

    1. I'm going to stick my neck out and say I think we've embraced the white trainers as a classic. Now this may depend on where you live, but certainly in London (and even as far as the home counties dare I say....), these have become the norm and are certainly age appropriate. I would probably say something traditional like a Stan or a Superstar is closer to classic than the newer kids on the block (my beloved Golden Goose or what I have coming up on the blog today which is going to divide opinion for sure!)

GO FOR IT! And honestly, you will wonder how you ever lived without them xx

    2. Meant to say it doesn't have to be a branded pair at all - H&M, Next, Topshop all have great options that do exactly the same job. x

  3. Hi Kat, I got so lucky in the mango sale, loved your style tips as I got the leather leopard print bucket bag, the long grey chunky cardigan with pockets (which is absolutely fabulous) some pony skin black and white style slip on trainers for only £19.99, I tried so many of these previously and as I'm a size 7 most looked awkward and clumpy on, however these don't they are really nice on. Keep up the great work, ...now I'm off to look at trousers

  4. Oooo just what I was looking for. Black cigarette pants to go with my as yet unworn black tux jacket. May wear them with my black and silver GG's, just to copy your style ;) Love your regular posts. I haven't got back into the groove of blogging yet since Christmas. Off to search for my mojo. Keep up the good work. Sue xx

  5. Loving your blog!!! Just wondered how you would wear those trousers in the colder months?? I like wearing ankle boots to work, and then find any trousers other that really skinny impossible to wear!!!! HELP!!!! Sarah X

    1. Aha, good point - now if you look back at the chelsea boot blog, there is a pic of a pair of peg leg (admittedly they are peg legs but could just as easily be straighter) jeans with a pair of flat chelsea boots and they look ace (well I think they do anyway!) Another option could be the sock boots I featured at the back end of last year? A boot that is close fitting to the ankle, I think would definitely definitely work.

  6. Love love love these trousers, but cold ankle alert?!! How would I overcome that?! Perfect for spring and I wear lots of ankle length trousers when it's warmer, but struggling with the bare ankles when it's cold?! I wear chelsea boots with them now (if they are the right length) but would love to wear my trainers.... Any suggestions?!

    1. I have to say, genuinely this season I have not had cold ankles at all. I find so long as the rest of my body is warm, my ankles are ok! But having said that, you could, dare I say it, crack out the pop socks... I know I know, but they 're not as bad as they used to be! Other than that, I know people who wear woolly socks as a contrast - glittery ones for example, but that's a bold statement and it has to be "you" to pull it off! (I couldn't At All. I'd rather have a bit of a breeze round the ankles!) Clearly they're not for freezing freezing weather but then you'd probably want boots for that anyway.

    2. I didn't dare mention pop socks. Those are the sort of things we pretend don't exist but we secretly have a few pairs for emergency situations... Or is it just me?!! I love the contrast socks idea but I fear I'm just quite not cool enough to pull the look off confidently! Roll on the warmer weather!

  7. Kat, I'm really loving the (new in) black Whistles wedges - would look good with culottes, midi skirts and.. all sorts of trousers. Maybe not that practical though. Ruth

    2. 'Papil' - model on the Whistles website seems to wear them with loads. They're pretty high, but possibly very lightweight. Will look out for your blog later..

    3. Funnily enough I'm currently now making my way through the excess fudge, having already finished the Thorntons and am flicking through the Next Labels catalogue and they are all wearing these in the Whistles section. Very summery but lovely! I'm thinking more interim......

  8. Ohh I love these trousers, any chance to try and look like Audrey is a good one! Hope the children are on the mend today - it sounds grim but at least it gives you the excuse to do not much (apart from tending sicklies of course..). Off piste question: Golden Goose. I'm going in. Are they true to size??? thanks Kat xx

    1. You are absolutely right. I have given my self over to the sofa, magazines and chocolates! Last one has gone down with it too, currently we're on Little Women and tomorrow we'll have to do the same! Right. Golden Goose. Yes, true to size but if you're between sizes, I'd say size up. So I have a 39.5 or a 40 but take a 40 in these (same as the Stans...)

    2. thank you lovely and wishing everyone better soon. I think Little Women, tea and chocs sounds wonderful. Mind you am I sat here at work so anything beats that...

  9. In the last few months I've ditched the jeans for the most part for trousers. I'm a convert to patterned and printed trousers now but I'm liking them a lot more than jeans

  11. Ha, total opposite for me but then I'm a complete column! They are looser on me round the hips than I think they're supposed to be but I quite like that. In fact I love the looseness of both pairs I have - a lovely alternative to the super skinnies I have.

Yes I definitely think a boyfriend, looser cut of jean is still going to be in. The cropped flare is also going to big and I think wide cropped are here for a couple of years.

Which leads nicely onto the looser blazer - yes, my grey is the same cut at the black adn I LOVE it. My hush one is slightly shorter but is the same loose cut. It's not quite a boyfriend cut as they're not as baggy in the body - a much leaner longline loose cut which I adore. Along with the looser trousers and chunkier shoes (or pointed flats for sure) all leads to the more androgynous look which is definitely a bigger trend again this year. All rather Scandi if you ask me.

It does mean though I think you can indulge a lovely fitted top. I have some great ideas for those coming up xx

  12. I LOVE it with the leggings... and sneaker... And hopefully Chelsea boots. I've got looser trousers on the agenda later this week as I can't stop coming across ones that I NEED!
