These boots are made for walking.

These gold boots that is.  No I didn't cave and end up with a £295 pair of Russell and Bromley beauties as I mentioned last week.  Had I loved them, I would definitely have got them.  But they looked just wrong diddly on me.  I *may* have gone back over the last couple of weeks and tried them on three times (and was rumbled by the SA. "weren't you in last week trying these on?"..... the shame. As I sloped out yet again without purchasing).  So it wasn't as if I didn't try to love them.  It was the toe that, for what I had in mind, was too square for my liking.  I think.  And the colour wasn't "quite" right...

Here's a pic of me in them.  Actually I couldn't quite put my finger on what it was - if I'm frank it was probably the £295 price tag, for which I needed to love with a capital L, Love them.  Like I said, The Husband really does think I've lost my mind with a hankering for gold boots and so I really had to have utter faith in my conviction that they were perfect.  And I didn't.

I also ordered the Pied a Terre ones and they were just plain nasty on me. Pure leprechaun.  But I needed a pair of gold boots in my life.  When a lovely friend of mine suggested I "make" some.  On more perusal online, it seemed that there were a number of creative ladies who had sprayed their boots gold.

I'll be honest.  This seemed like a recipe for disaster.  I do not have a creative bone in my body and I'm still scarred by the red velvet pedal pushers that my mother fashioned for more when I was about 9.  They were infinitely more Hansel (minus Gretal) than the Tammy Girl ones I had had my heart set on.  Scarred, I tell you, by all things fashion that are homemade.

But there was no other option and so a boot shopping I went.   Whilst I was hugely tempted to buy the Namesake Beige Suede ankle boots from Office (gorgeous gorgeous boots - I just want them full stop!) I'm not sure I could have lived with myself at wasting nearly £70 as you can guarantee I'd be making a complete pig's ear of them.

So I thought for my experiment, I would get the  Women's Western Boot from Peacocks at a much more palatable £25, despite them not being suede.

Here they are taped up, all ready to go.

Armed with a can of gold spray paint .  This involved a trip to Hobbycraft.  Dear.  God.  I know that for some people this is mecca and if you have a penchant or talent for all things Arts and Crafts then I can completely see how this would be an Aladdin's cave of goodies.  Taking into account my lack of artistic prowess and the fact I had to take the 6 and 4 year old who thought it was a highly appropriate place to play "It", I wanted to slit my wrists after 30 seconds.   But I was successful in my mission and happily don't plan to make a return journey soon.  (I do however, now know how The Husband feels in a shoe shop)

And here is the final result.  In the light.

Another view - here you can see the fact I have left them quite distressed looking.  Also sprayed with shoe protector.

In situ!  I am very fond of them and am now clearly gutted that I didn't buy the suede version as, whilst these are THE comfiest boots ever (seriously they're like wearing slippers), I'm not entirely sure how long they'll last if I wear them a lot and they're only fabric.  So the plan is to wear them to death and hopefully snaffle a pair of the Namesakes in the sale or with a promotional code (oh isn't hindsight a fine thing - darn Grazia having an Office discount code only a matter of weeks ago.)  and then get spraying again.  On the upside, I do have a lot of spray left in my can so I don't have to treat the boys to a Hobbycraft expedition again.

It's very hard to get a good photo of them (my incompetence) but they do look distressed but not as knackered as they look in these pics.  Honest guv.

Now allegedly the sun is coming out on Sunday.  Properly.... Which means there may well have to be an element of flesh on show.  Seeing as my body is nowhere near sun ready, this will be my feet.  Which means I, of course, have another shoe obsession.  Tick one box and onto the next.   The blog is on the way.  Oh and you clearly can all thank me for the lovely weather we have on the way as I now have boots to wear.  You're welcome xx

  6. The boots are brilliant. Didn't you do well and I'm impressed you remembered to masking tape them. I think I recognise that lovely white quilted jacket. It's great and I love the way you styled it. I give it one thing, it's versatile - you'll get your moneys worth out of that one!

    1. Sue I'd love to confess to having got the masking tape out - in truth the kids have hidden it god knows where and so I resorted to micropore. And yes, I caved on the jacket - I swapped it for the black jacquard coat that came apart. I think you're right, it's infinitely versatile. I got so much wear out of my cream one last year, I definitely will love another cream one in a slightly different style.

  11. They look fantastic and seemingly better with wear. I have all sorts of horror stories with pantomime dressing and as soon a you mentioned leprachauns, it put me off the whole idea of gold boots. But your home made ones nailed it!

  14. I'm pleased you're pleased but they're not for me at all. Personally the idea of gold boots per se terrify me, as all gold/silver shoes, bags etc do. The 80's scarred me for life! That and the knowledge that every single woman over the age of 50 wears gold shoes and animal print whilst on a cruise. When I'm old I will NOT wear gold, animal print or for that matter purple!

  19. The thought of you in Hobbycraft is just beyond funny - I too despise the place (memories of attempting to make my own wedding invitations - totally deluded and ended up buying "proper" ones after my efforts looked like something a cat sicked up!) Find this whole obsession over one item then moving on the next very reassuring - totally what goes on in my head. At the moment I'm having a summer jacket/parka with a hood obsession - any tips? Actually a metallic gold/silver in that could be nice.
