Make mine a floaty one..

...talking about my favourite subject at the moment, so I mean a coat.  And surely that's a contradiction in terms - as floaty doesn't sound very warm and a coat should surely be just that.

But actually at this time of year, do we really want a full on coat coat?  So I've done the cardigan coaty thing and come up with a big fat nada, therefore I've moved on.  I say moved on - clearly that just means shelved for the while.

And I was looking for black but that didn't pan out, so next up is camel.

Decision made - next challenge is to find the perfect floaty trench.  It must be camel.  It must be fluid.  I need something that goes over skirts and dresses and in my head, this is going to work.  It has to work as I really do need something else other than a short jacket. I feel that it needs to be long and is mustn't be structured.

The more eagle eyed amongst you, may be aware that I did get one in the Summer from Zara.  Which is great but is very lightweight.  When I say, lightweight, think the thickness of a tee shirt.  As much as I've said I'm not looking for full on duvet, something that will give slightly more coverage than a voile curtain is probably a good idea.

Funnily enough, there is inspiration behind this, in the form of something very expensive.  No surprise there then.  Damn you Ms Marant.  But this is so gorgeous. (No one mention that it's more khaki than camel.  No one).

Dani Coat from Isabel Marant £390

The problem with pictures of course, is that it's hard to define which are flowy and which are a bit stiff.  I fear you may have to order to find out.  This one, length wise, does look marvellous.

ASOS Maxi Mac with oversized storm flap £75

Then there's full on long and full on drapey but the colour?  A tad too white for my liking.  Plus I would get those tie sleeves covered in coffee in about 20 minutes.

Tie Sleeve Trench by Boutique at Topshop £185

If you want flowy, then a knitted version surely fits the bill.  Adore this but am gutted that for me, it's not long enough.  I want it long as well as flowy.

Cotton blend knitted trench coat from Mango £59.99

And then there's a not belted version from Autograph at M&S.  I tried this on today and it comes up HUGE so definitely size down.  I've ordered the 10 "in the interests of research"...  I love the idea.  I adore the back.  It might not work.  But imagine if it does.  It's the perfect colour.

Back Pleat Trench Coat from M&S £129

And then I've ordered this.  I know, I know, I get so fed up of Zara quality and I'm sure it will go straight back, but I've got to try it.

Oversized Trench Coat from Zara £119

Now this one might be amazing were it not green.  I've tried to persuade myself that it's really a camel green (like that's a colour) but it's really just green, isn't it?  Or maybe I should just live with green... now that's an option.

Modal Trench from Mango in forest green (the clue is in the title I guess...) £59.99

And then we have some not entirely drapey looking but it did look much drapier in the navy.  Plus not everyone will want flowy and loose.  This is a great price and I love the pared back trench theme.

Clean Belted Trench Coat from Warehouse was £89 now £66.75

And then there's not so pared back.  Ok, so I immediately think Muppets but I have to say I do rather love it.  Or maybe I should just go on a scarf hunt.  Idea fodder right there.

Faux Fur Collar Trench from Mango £79.99

I'm thoroughly confused as per usual and feel I should order the Isabel Marant just to prove to myself it's rubbish quality.  No?  Ditto the Zara one.

In the meantime, outfit from yesterday.  It was the now 10yr old's birthday, the 12yr old had a half day at school, I had work in the morning so the day went in a flash.  And culminated in three hours bowling.  Who goes bowling in a dress?  Seriously, what a moron.

Dress - M&S
Black Onyx biker jacket - hush
Copeland Trainers - Air & Grace
Black Haworth bag - Village England

I am so exhausted today, I can't tell you.  The 12yr old had another day off (inset day) and we spent the whole day at Bluewater, followed by swimming lessons.  I am now off out for dinner - changed my £15 H&M dress so that's getting an outing.

Has everyone decided what sort of coat they're going for this season?  At the moment, a trench will solve so many of my problems, I am so hoping one of these pans out.

  1. I do like the idea of a flowing trench, and then I remember that I have two inbetweeny coats already, one in grey, and the other is a navy trench that isn't flowing. So can I justify another? I do like the modal one from mango, but I tend towards the navy, and there in lies the problem, two navy trench coats may be a tad overdoing it, and as lovely as the green one is I just don't think it'd get the wear. But it is oh, so tempting!!
I am trying to abstain at the moment, as I'm off to Aarhus with my best mate at the beginning of next month, and that's always hard on the bank account - this time I'm going to see if I can go with a plan of action!

    1. Ok even I have to say two navy trench coats might be over kill if they're similar. BUT if they solve different outfit dilemmas then I think that's fine!

  2. I havethis problem every year. I love trench coats - on everyone else. Being well equipped in the boob department double breasted stuff just doesn't work! So onwards with the annual search...

    1. A more fluid one may be the option then as I wouldn't normally be wearing this done up... which makes it much more forgiving in the boob department, I would say?

  3. Hi Kat, I actually saw you in Zara today and admit to being a little bit 'awestruck' lol! I agree the quality of coats were poor. All I ended up buying was a grey sequin tee (from Zara) and a leopard print blouse from H&M. My forty something friends all agee that we've become slightly obsessed with leopard print and sequins! As it happens I have an amazing trench from Reiss, which I've worn year in year out and it still looks brand new.

    1. Oh you should so have come up and said hello! Was I moaning about it being a rubbish Zara?!! I went to the Regent St one on Tuesday and there was just so so so much more choice! And I am SO obsessed with sequins and leopard print - you're definitely not alone! Have ordered the Zara trench online x

  4. Oh yes, they are gorgeous! I must admit I stayed away from trying one on as I may just have to own one, maybe when my navy trench is past its best I'll replace with burberry. Even though I've got boobs, I can get away with double breasted coats as long as they're nipped in at the waist, and being short I'd go for a 3/4 length, and certainly not below the knees.

  5. There's a nice cream trench in H&M but it was impossibly long on me. Typical H&M problem - it would seem that nobody is 5'4" in their world. I've discovered that while non floaty trench coats can look a bit stiff when new after a couple of wears they do improve. Now loving my 2nd hand navy trench from Gap. Yesterday to my great delight I found a cream debenhams trench in a charity shop for £15. Ooh and a pair of black patent loafer brogues for 8.50 (Office!). Am supposed to be shopping my wardrobe this month (my version of Stoptober). Dismally failing but I don't care :)

  7. I absolutely love them on other people but they just don't work on me. they're always too short in the arm and to get the shoulders to fit, I always end up with way too much fabric on the body. I would buy one in a heartbeat if they looked great on me! Having said that - definitely looking for a flowy number so this wouldn't really fit the bill anyway! (which is handy...!)
