I've come over all Mr Doubtfire

My inspiration has, of course, come from the wonderful Jenna Lyons as I mentioned a couple of blogs ago.  Unfortunately it's all become a little bit less JCrew and slightly more Mrs Doubtfire in reverse.  So Mr Doubtfire.  The buying of mens clothes.

In all seriousness though, perhaps drowning in my own delusion, I'm actually quite pleased with myself.

Like a say, not so much JCrew but hello M&S and Uniqlo.  Jenna herself gets her shirts tailor made as she's so tall - she doesn't even buy them from JCrew anyway (even though, I will say the arms on my sweatshirt, considering it's a medium are super long which is a first).  But she does advocate stealing your other half's clothes.

Hmm yes.  Or maybe not.   I chose to have a good peruse round the men's departments and I have come up trumps.  Now if you are of a more a diminutive stature then this perhaps isn't going to work for you, especially the shirts.  But I am aware of a couple of other more petite bloggers who love the jumpers.

Without further ado let's see the goods.

Starting with part one of my Jenna Stalkathon - the shirt.  These normally for me are the most uncomfortable items ever.  Too short in the arms, exposing my midriff if I lean up to get something, god forbid I should tuck them in - they come undone as soon as I sit down/stand up.  I feel completely claustrophobic in them.   The dimensions are just wrong diddly on me.

But call off the dogs.  I may have found a solution (well I hope it works as I've already worn it and taken off the label).  This is perfect.

Autograph Cotton Rich Classic Collar Shirt £29.50

Here is a rather handsome young man, doing a shirt no favours actually - at least M&S aren't sexist in their delegation of appalling styling.

I love the fact that it has stretch in it - from the research (albeit limited, I'm not going to lie, I didn't find looking at men's shirts the most absorbing topic I've ever looked at, they do all start to merge into one.  I do now know what The Husband feels like if I ever ask him to come shoe shopping.  It may come as no surprise when I reveal that this happens practically never) I've done, most are 100% cotton but this one does have a bit of stretch.

Here we have the pics - outfit from yesterday.

I got the size small and randomly mine has black buttons whereas the one online seems to have white.  It is definitely the same code though.  Go figure.

This is a Regular Fit which isn't nearly as loose as I had anticipated it might be - would be idea also for those with a larger bust - plenty of room.

I would like to try a slim fit I think and have my eye on the following packs.  The chances of me coming addicted to shirts is high.  Very very high.  I think these are the perfect addition to my wardobe to tie in with so many tops that I have but have gone off - hey presto a whole new lease of life.  Plus it's just a subtle variation on my old look but I think adds quite a fresh dimension (she says sounding like a total tool.  Apologies)

These in a slim fit - I believe a small is around a size 15 so the lovely Sales Assistant in M&S assured me.

3 Pack Slim Fit Easy Care plain shirts - £27

Am liking also the pale blue and the pinstripe in this pack.

3 pack easy care assorted shirts £27

And to complete the outfit, drum roll.......

A jumper.  But not just any jumper, no, a man's jumper.  Hoorah!  Long sleeves, lovely slouch and cheap.  Less than £20 for Extra Fine Merino Wool.  Oh thank you thank you thank you Uniqlo.  Only issue I have is which colour to get.  I adore the black, need the navy and love the yellow.  Plus the dark grey is gorgeous as well.   But for that price....

I am here in the small, they also do extra small which would be perfect for the dinkier amongst you.  I'm not sure I'd personally want it any bigger. I love the fact that even for a man's jumper, it doesn't have a very wide crew neck.  I'm looking forward to wearing over my cigarette pants to make them look slightly less formal.  Perfect for a night out with statement jewellery and heels.

This would be perfect for a more feminine look with a huge necklace over it.

Check out the sleeve length.  For all of us who are constantly dealing with half mast sleeves, I give you a normal length.  I may have almost cried.

So there we are.  My first foray into the world of men's shopping but for me.  Ridiculously excited with my purchases.

Have you ever bought men's clothes?  I do recall my beloved 501s which I did try again during my jeans quest in the summer but they didn't work this time round. I have a whole new avenue of shopping to explore now.  Giddy or what?  Any recommendations?

And here we have my outfit from last night - an absolutely superb Beaujolais Nouveau party at a very good friend's house.  I then thought it would be a marvellous idea to come home and stay up chatting with The Husband until 1am.  Clearly my head this morning didn't agree.  This was however an improvement on my first ever Beaujolais Nouveau party when I was 25 and managed to arrive home with only one shoe.  Never did find the other one.  Patent Gucci heeled loafers.  Still mourn them.

  1. Ah, Uniqlo. Possibly my favourite ever shop for basics. I do have a man's "boyfriend" cardigan from there - unfortunately I can't nick the OH's as he's an L and you really do need an S as a laydee. Their knits are absoulutely brilliant quality for the price. Am currently cosy in a charcoal cashmere roll neck bought in the sale several years ago.

    1. Yes I couldn't borrow The Husband's as his would be slightly too large on me! On the upside it means he can't borrow mine. He also isn't a fan of thin merino - says it's not sturdy enough, he likes a proper lambswool jumper. Knits are indeed amazing for the price, completely right. Have to say thought, I didn't rate the feel of their cashmere - ditto the cashmere in next, ditto in Tesco. Just a bit meh. I'd rather have fine knit merino. Washes better as well. xx

  2. I really like this look on you Kat. Funny enough I got a huge Uniqlo order today. Ordered the V neck fine merino in pale grey for husband (actually ordered 2 of same size, dur) and a black (ladies!) one for me, which is really nice - fitted but not clingy (M - I'm a 12). And I got a couple of the new extra warm Heatech long sleeved tops and sweatshirt style top - both fab.

So now I just need a shirt....

    Nic xx

  4. Good to see the guy shirt thang going on, I'm tall & skinny like you & have been wearing guys' shirts under jumpers and/or tight tops for years, I love the sharper collars, longer tails & often wear the cuff links too! Great blog, you've given me ideas on how to mix & match my very comprehensive even further, as we have very similar tastes.

    Look forward to next blog.

  5. I just bought 3 men's Uniqlo cashmere crewnecks here a few weeks ago - they are divine and cheap! I went for a medium and they are lovely and slouchy with jeans and wash like a dream...Love the shirt on you - oddly enough I'm wearing a J.Crew chambray popover today which I haven't worn for ages and I'm really enjoying cuffs and a collar! x

    1. It's a sweatshirt from Zara right way back at the beginning of the summer. Very thin actually but then it was only £20. Which makes the Uniqlo jumpers an even bigger bargain now that I think about it!

  9. You look fab Kat and your lovely Zara coat has also inspired me to root out an old camel Vivienne Westwood coat.

I have lovingly looked after it for donkeys years but not worn it for yonks because I deemed it too old. Have just given it a bit of a revive and a little blog post outing, so thanks for inspiring me to use what golden oldies I have in the back of my wardrobe.

Love your look - very classic but like the twist with the jeans.

  11. Yes I have a man's merino v neck sweater from M and S. I bought it last year when they seemed to have a better range of colours than the women's ranges generally. I love the shirts on you combined with the sweaters. Very nice! I haven't tried a man's shirt but I think the sleeves might be too long. Marie S
