Pleggings

Although apparently it should be "plegging".  The fashion world has taken to eliminating all things plural from the description of things which we wear on our legs.  Mine is not to reason why, my role as a 40 year old sheep is to follow blindly and sound like an utter cheese to those who consider all things fashion to be as fickle as it probably is.  So, we have a jean, a legging, a jegging, a cord and even a tregging.

And I now bring you the Plegging.   A pleather legging (see? It's easy if you say it enough times.  And don't talk to anyone who has half a brain.)

In an ideal world for me where thighs and derriere are slightly less taut than they once were, a more substantial pair of leather look jeans would be my preference (clearly this would make them a plean.  And there I draw the line.)

But there aren't that many options out there surprisingly and so we have a selection of Hobson's choice.  I have also had to sling in a couple of coated options as they do look very similar and actually may be more wearable than a full on PU pair.

When will I wear these?  I have my new blouse (my beloved Marant), I have my new shell tops (sculptured tops from Whistles), I am ready to rock on a night out.  And I would love to crack these out in the day as well.  I know that good old Jenna Lyons loves her denim and her capri pants but I would love to add a plegging to my wardrobe.

Starting with my faves - these are proper pleather - not a hint of coated denim in sight.   Am ordering these to start off with.

Tripp NYC Leather Look Skinnies  £70

A slightly more upmarket pair.  Again I am very tempted to try these as there is definitely something to be said for a really good fitting pair (and these are probably a slightly higher rise than a cheaper pair)

Armani Jeans Black Super Skinny jeans - £144.99

Wrangler Courtney Coated Leather Look skinny jeans  £80  At this rate I'm going to be ordering three pairs (and counting) They do these in a 32 inch leg length which is great news for those long of limb.

If you're more petite then this have your name all over it - the model is only 5ft6 (yes, that's "only" to Gullivers like me I appreciate!) and they do look on the short side on her.  And they're a bargain - as it says though, size up as Mango does run small in this size.

Mango Coated Skinny jeans £34.99

Vera Moda coated jegging £32  I know people rave about these.  Would be rude not to try for this price (see about the counting thing?  That makes four)

Moving into proper plegging territory. I would say definitely less structured than the above jeans. Having said all of that, I absolutely adore my Dorothy Perkins coated jeggings and feel that they're definitely not legging like.  Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't wear anything tucked into them (dear lord feel rather sick at the mere thought) but with a shirt and sweatshirt over - yup, I'd be happy to day that (mentally sorts outfit for tomorrow!)

Black Leather look treggings (yes it's alphabet bingo) now £19.60

These also look like a more substantial legging, even though I was slightly scared at the "gold trim" description.  It appears from much scrutiny that the gold trim is in fact a gold zip and a minute gold bead.  The fear with that sort of description is that you don't look too carefully and get them home only to discover there's a life sized Chinese Dragon embroidered in gold down the back of one leg.  Which is always a slight fly in the ointment if you were looking for essentially a plain pair.

Black Leather Look Gold Trim Treggings £21

There are some variations on the theme, starting with these from McQ Alexander McQueen. If full on pleather isn't your gig, then these with a black denim back half may be much more palatable.

Women's Panelled Skinny Jeans £179.95 from Jules B

River Island Leather Look Biker jean £35  Moto detail a go go.

I have learnt that there is a very fine line between cool All Saints stylee black leather jeans and full on Sandy from Grease. I can almost hear these ones singing "You're the one that I Want" at me.  Almost.  However I am that old and decrepit that I quite like high waisted (not because it's remotely on trend, merely because they're comfy.  Great for tucking your muffin top into.  The shame)

ASOS Uber High Waisted Denim Jeggings in Coated Glossy Black £35

After all that, if you are just after a plain pair of coated jeggings, then the aforementioned ones from DPs that I got last year, really are the business.  Comfy (seriously, I have pyjamas that I don't like as much), wash like a dream, don't stretch when you wear them - for the price they are perfect.

Black Coated Jegging now £16.80  Here's a link to them in tall for £19.20. I am ridiculously tempted to get another pair but NO, I need full on leather look now....

However I have to finish with the ultimate.  Read and weep.  Not a P in sight.  Women's Leather Biker Jeans from All Saints £298. Yes and that's not even taking into consideration all the dry cleaning bills (yawn)  Oh and the parking fines I seem to get whenever I go and pick up the blasted cleaning as I'm only going to be two mins. Why?  Eejit.

To be completely frank if it wasn't for the dry cleaning aspect, were they a fabulous fit, I would actually pay that as they are, to me, the most versatile trousers out there.  However there is a massive cleaning issue and so that's £300 saved then.  Just like that, it's amazing.  I am a financial wizard.

So there we have a brief selection.  Are you up for it?  Will you be taking the plegging challenge?

Finishing with my outfit from today.  Now this was taken in a complete rush and you can't see that I'm actually wearing my wine and bone coloured Breton top from Massimo Dutti underneath which I really love with the leopard print.   Just looks like a lorra leopard and a lorra scarf here.

Am slightly in love with this jacket - one of my fave purchases of this year, ditto the £15 Gap Real straight jeans.  Does look better when you can see the top but ho hum.

Wine and bone Breton top - Massimo Dutti (even though you can't see it - tool)
Real Straight jeans turned up - Gap
Navy and cream ballet flats - The British Flat Shoe Company
Chestnut Lily bag - D&G
Leopard print scarf - Louis Vuitton
Navy boucle jacket - Zara
Tan leather cuff - Mulberry

Have loads of plans for the blog posts coming up. which is code for, I have loads of things I want to buy.  However the wonderful thing about this time of year is that it can be filed under research for Christmas Lists.  The fact that The Husband has never asked me for a list and has paid absolutely zero attention to any list I may have proffered, hasn't deterred me in the past and I shall continue to plough on this year regardless.  You're all welcome!

  1. I have a Topshop pair of 'pleggings'. Haven't worn them during the day but work well for a night out with a cream blouse and pointy animal print heeled ankle boots.

  6. Even though I am now the proud owner of a pair of Marant pour (get me) H&M leather jeans (which look a positive bargain now I've seen those All Saints and Joules numbers), I still want some pleather for "everyday" wear. Haha! I've tried several pairs from H&M but the jeggings are all too low rise, and the leggings looked fab until I sat down. Let's just say it wasn't a pretty sight...

The best I've found so far are Top Shop's high-waisted numbers. I do like the look of the first pair though, and the Dotty P ones have to be worth checking out. Thanks for a fab post as ever.

    1. The ankle grazer ones? They're fab aren't they? So pleased you like them. Too short for me. Sob. x

    2. Ah - but they do 3 different lengths. And their sizing is so rubbish that even the same sizes can be totally different so worth trying. I'm 5'10" and had to turn up a couple of pairs that supposedly grazed the ankle.
      Thanks again
